Hannah's Car Left Her Stranded! Malibu Crank, No Start

In this video we help out Hannah as she was left stranded when her 2007 Chevrolet Malibu 2.2 that would crank, but not start. This has happened to her 3 times but unfortunately she has always been out of town when this happened. Finally it died at home and I was able to track it down for her. I watch a lot of car repair channels (it's relaxing). Eric O. is top-tier. Evidence: 1. Superb structure to the video content (generally an intro. where he sets the problem or project up, the actual body of the work, and then a solid conclusion) 2. Superb lighting and sound, with multiple angles. 3. Places the viewer right next to him as if you were being trained by him. 4. His temperament and personality fit extremely well with video work. He not only is able to teach but is teachable. 5. His stream of consciousness type dialogue is always interesting, and at times breaks into outright hilarious. Combine this with his family interactions and he is unstoppably funny with quick wit. 6. Extremely persistent when most individuals would have melted down. 7. Pays incredible attention to detail--in diagnostics, routine brake jobs, as well as large jobs. He seems to have an inner aversion to cutting corners or doing anything that reeks of "hack" work. 8. The fellow is one hard worker.

@@strtngfrsh I think you are crazy, I was going to say #7 is most critical. I am VERY anal about working on my cars an Eric is one of very few I would be willing to have work on them. Sometimes he is forced to cut corners because that is what the customer wants. Give him a car to fix and tell him no rush and don't worry about what it costs and see what you get.

@@strtngfrsh taking the easy route isn't always cutting corners... Well, kinda the same thing, hmm... Anyhow, I'd say the end result works, and it's secure and will last. This is upstate NY we're talking, you don't need to put a brand new wire harness in a 2008 chevy Malibu, when in all likelihood, the car is starting to rust, and will be thrown away in 3 years time... Make a repair that's trustworthy and inexpensive (in parts, and labor...) and get on with things. There's plenty more to work on. Then again, that's not to say that his repair isn't going to last longer than a new harness and fuse box would... Some repairs are more skookum than the cheap parts were initially.

You are an amazing man. You missed your calling, should have been a shop teacher. Your patience and understanding of electronic processes is uncanny. Having been a Cadillac tech for years, and before complicated electronics, we had more vacuum controllers,and had to chase a lot of lines like you do with wiring. I so enjoy watching your thought process as it's spot on. Also showing your family on videos makes it like stopping in at a local shop that a friend owns. Shayne Baldwin I retired before all the computers took over. We had many problems in the 80's, moved forward too fast. My specialty was the v864 system. Sound idea, poor implementation,as at that time we didn't have the controllers needed to operate smoothly. The lag time for mechanical components versus the later electronic devices was to wide.

Stephen Lawrence It seems like Cadillac was the testbed for all the new luxury systems we would eventually see trickle down into the less expensive cars. Kind of using the Cadillac to work out the bugs assuming those that had bought these expensive luxury cars could afford to repair them and thereby identifying weak areas withing the system that could be corrected for other models or depending on feedback ditching the idea totally.

InsideOfMyOwnMind if I wasn't in a wheelchair I would be happy to. I remember one time a gentleman came in with a 65 coupe DeVille and complained that his a/c only blew through the def. and heater . I looked at the car and back then caddy put a restriction on the a/c line to prevent the hot air from blowing in your face. On one vacuum line there was a small time ing device that was plugged. I let the younger guys look at for about an hour, and finally went out and unplugged the t and removed the timer. Started the car and ta da all fixed. Little idiosyncratic things that you just learn over time. Those younger guys just stood and shook there heads and asked why? I told them Cadillac always tried to make the consumer happy. They never really got that back when that was the principal of a luxurious car.

Years ago I had a some mid size GM with no fuel pressure maybe a Malibu I can't remember. I replaced the fuel pump - lasted 3 months came back on a hook. I tested for power at the fuel pump grey wire, both sides of the connector. tested good. I had power so I replaced the fuel pump again warranty. (mechanics are one of the only professions your not paid when you make a mistake) This happened again (I'm a little dense). I removed the pins from the fuel pump connector near the fuel tank harness side and crimped them tighter - problem solved. Eric you have great diagnostic skills. I've worked as a diagnostic tech my whole life. "If you can do it others can too" No! many cant perform at your level. I worked for a few dealers and hate their money grubbing dishonesty. I run an honest shop and the Lord provides all my needs without dishonesty. Nothing has been more satisfying in my life to tell big dealer managers my toolbox has wheels and I was looking for a job when I found this one when I was working for the man. I enjoy your videos. You're a good teacher.

Years ago an old timer showed me the trick of keeping some electrical tape wrapped around a small screw or bolt in order to work in a tight spot like you did. I like to keep a few loaded bolts in the tool box for this reason. Keep 'em coming Eric - you're running a clean show! 👍

barry8082 I took the dash apart and tested the overhead module wires and the ambient temperature sensor and wires while trying to figure out the air conditioning electrical in my dads truck, he tells me afterwards that the wires go to the ecm also, I then find all the wires I needed to test and most of the ones I was curious about and get the parts on that we’re waiting for the wires to be checked after a new connector was put in (to make sure there wasn’t a break further down) and then the fuse block was out to check why no power was going to the relay block outside and then it was done (and now we have $275 wasted into it because there was a leak that no one found before filling it...

I have an 2007 Malibu. I am glad to watch any instructional videos for that model and year. A year or so ago I had a start, no start issue. The battery & alternator were good. I thought it was the starter so I bought one and put it in. Still, same problem. I had it towed to Firestone and they wanted $1500.00 to fix it. Another you tube video helped me figure it out that it was the starter relay. I got a new relay and it has been running good ever since. Eric, I was about to say there is not relay box like that in my trunk. So I paused the video and went outside to see. Yep, it is back there. I plan to watch this video more than once. My Malibu is my daily. I need. to keep it working.

You should see the crap the shops do around here, which is why I am a DIY'er. The only thing I bring my cars in for is tires and alignments. After the last alignment I had done, my steering wheel was pointing at 2:00. I ended up redoing it myself with a string. Please don't let a few negative comments get you down. Some shops are terrible in West Phoenix. Had a misfire on my 96 Suburban 7.4L. They repalce the injectors, no change, they want to replace the CATs, I say no and take it to a muffler shop (much cheaper). No change, take it to another shop. They say the MAF is bad, replace that, no change. The distributor is off a tooth (which should set a crankcase/camshaft position code). After working on it for another 6 hours, they get the timing set right finally. Runs great now. I notice that the distributor cap changed color mysteriously from blue to black.....But, when you're 4 hours from home you can't work on it yourself, gotta pay scam mechanics.

As a general rule,I always keep the old parts and show the customer what went wrong. Even if they dont ask for them back,I still save them to show them what was wrong. You are right,most people dont want the old parts or ask for them back. At that point, whatever it is that is yours to do what you want. I sometimes save certain things,depending if its got other usable parts on it. I sometime can pass that on to the next guy if it happends to be a part if I can use a used part. Swapping parts that are not specific to the right model can always lead to more headaches than when you started. Especial when the sales counter dude tells you" Yeah,it will work on that model" And it freekin dont,reguardless of what you try. Then you want to take it back and beat him with it till he cant walk right but by now its so hacked up you cant take it back,so you end up getting OEM when you ahould have in the first place but thought you might save a few bucks( yeah right!). Anyways. Its always best to ask if a customer wants the old parts unless its obvious they wont.

I had a similar issue. A guy called me to come look at his jag xjr. He had left it sitting for 3 months and all of a sudden it would crank and start but not run unless you gave it the beans on the gas pedal. It had spark, maf was good, and throttle body was good and so was egr. It had momentary fuel pressure at initial prime then pressure would drop. To make a long story short, the vehicle has an primary and secondary pump. At initial prime both are supposed to fire up, then the primary takes over but in this case only the secondary was working. He was told he needed 2 new pumps which would cost 3000 dollars. I checked the relay and sure enough there was no control side signal to the primary pump. Jumped the load side and boom heard it prime and car ran!!! Ended up a mouse ate through the signal wire. Weird part is it had no codes!!!! Saved this guy a boatload of cash.

Trick a good friend of mine taught me is to use a socket on a cordless and run the amount of tape you want on it. The socket turns into your roll of tape. Hope it helps. As always, great videos. Thank you

To make taping easier, I always wrap a couple of feet of tape around a deep well 1/4 inch socket. It is much easier to spin the socket around the bundle than a large roll of tape.

This was such a great video for so many reasons. Not only did Eric O. do a top quality repair as always but this time he got to do it for Hannah who works at the shop with him. Call me weird but it made me feel so good to see him helping out someone that is close to him and she'll know the repair was done right when she is away at college! Also i think it's worth mentioning that i really like how Eric O. addresses concerns in previous videos that viewers may have about his procedure. He doen't bad mouth them but rather gives them the reasons for his decisions. I read the comments and i can understand how people were were concerned about giving the customer the choice to get his old fuse box returned in the last Buick video. But would you expect Eric O. To not do the right thing??? As he stated he gave the customer the old fuse box, he looked at it, and then threw it away. So no harm no foul for him to take the fuses and relays for himself after the customer showed that he no longer wanted the item. I know ALL KZbin channels get some negative feedback but the SMA channel offers the highest quality repairs and greatest respect for its customers. I always spread positive feedback about this channel because the truth of the matter is, there is NONE better. This video is a prime example showcasing Hannah needing help with her own personal vehicle. It makes me proud to see Eric O. stepping up(which i knew he would) and helping others without the thought of financial gain. He wanted to make sure her car was fixed right so she wouldn't have any further issues with that fuse box. I'm proud to be a part of this channel and all that it stands for. Great job Eric O.

What I don't understand is why SMA only has 87k subs . I watching a ChrisFix video yesterday and he has 2.37 mil subs . Don't get me wrong I think his videos are fine, BUT crap compared to Eric's . This guy needs way more credit for what he does. Keep up the good job.

Not me it seems like I learn something in most of your diagnosis videos and i really enjoy it. Also how you prove yourself before repair/replace the problem. I wish I was better about that years back I installed a new fuel pump only to find out it was the fuse. next time i wasn't so quick to start throwing parts at the problem.

Let me sound selfish for a bit, ironically .... I prefer this channel doesnt grow so much ... all the channels that hit 1M or 2M subs started crapping or go behind a paywall They were amazing back when they had 100K. But this makes sense. The person on the other side is a human being so no way to run a shop, and generate content for this amount of viewers. Hats off for you Eric to keep the quality and the effort on even reading the comments. And dont even waste your time on the negative comments .... Just like other person said, for each negative you have 9 positives. This is YT ... "that is your problem lady" LOL.

The upper limit on the number of subs has more to do with the popularity of the subject than quality of content. ChrisFix's videos are aimed at people who want to start working on their own cars, but don't have access to lifts or shop tools. SMA caters more for the person who wants to understand the mindset of the professional mechanic, and the diagnostic process.

South Main is THE BEST mechanic on the web. I've been one myself for a large part of my 50+ year career (when I wasn't being a mechanical/electrical engineer), so I have a little real-world experience to base my opinion on. It's great to find a younger guy who can teach an old know-it-all geezer like me something new. This guy gets it right because he's smart, he actually understands how things work, why they're made a particular way (and when the engineers were idiots...which happens a lot), and he CARES. That's a tough combination to beat. Just an FYI: It's been my experience that as manufacturers go to smaller gauge wire to save costs, sometimes they're getting the wire just on the razor's edge of being sized correctly to carry the loads required. Because of higher resistance in smaller wires, they can tend to run a little warm, and crimps, if they're not absolutely perfect, tend to get a little loose over the years as they heat and cool. As they get loose, resistance goes up at the crimp, which gets hotter, which eventually melts plastic sockets and discolors insulation...and can cause intermittent electrical issues exactly like you have here. Not-great engineering is pretty common, especially in electrical systems, as that rear-window-defogger circuit shows. A correctly-designed circuit won't overheat and melt stuff, period. And lotsa "mechanics" just don't get it. I have a PT Cruiser client who cooked her cylinder head after a local shop had replaced a perfectly good radiator and both perfectly good fans...all because the crimps within the fan connector had become loose.

Well, it has been 19 yrs since I was a certified mechanic and I miss it. Your videos make me want to go back. (can’t afford to go back). I then spent the next 13.5 yrs working on 50 yr old industrial gas compression equipment. I miss this too. For the last 6 yrs I am supporting the entire company in staying in compliance with regulating agencies. Thanks for your content. It’s good to see a professional at work.
