We don't get to watch or listen to such well-read intellectuals now! Those were better times when well-educated scholars were put up on the television to give enthralling performances.

"Once egalitarians get going you never know what damage they can do." Words of wisdom, those.

You have to be loaded to live in Southport as house prices are like in the hundreds of thousands to a million. Not a town for the average working class. Birkdale is full of million pound houses with massive driveways. Anyone know how many times they have refurbished and painted the bridge and iron railings that run alongside and go over the Marine Lake?. I have seen photos from the 1970s and the bridge then was a yellow colour with possibly green and white painted lampposts. I have a home video taken in 1992 and the top half of the bridge was painted red, but then sometime during the 90s they mustve spend another couple of million (or so they say) on another refurb of the bridge and the lampposts and top half of the railings and bridge were painted a greenish or turqoise colour. Then around 2010-11-ish it was then painted again (and the path re surfaced) to a cream/beige colour, which I think is still the same today. Anyone know what year it changed from red to the turqoise/blue colour in the 90s?. I have seen another photo taken in the 90s beside the lake and the blue/green lampposts look quite freshly painted. I'm guessing about 1993?. I remember when they were refurbing the bridge around 2010/11 and painting it the cream colour and thinking that they chose an awful colour. Was better in the previous colour I think. Southport back then had so much going for it, back in the 50s and 60s it had a bathing pool and Peter Pan's playground, and even a zoo (I know animal rights people will agree its a good thing that has gone). Now its just the same as every other town, same retail parks full of Dunhelm Mill's for people who like wasting money on blankets and cushions, McDs, Pets at Home etc, bowling alleys and multiplexes. Gone too is the reptile house and Steamport museum. At least the fair is still there, but even that is a shadow what it used to be, gone are the overhead cable car lifts..

Lancashire's borders should be restored to it's rightful place as living breathing palatinate of her Majesty the Queen!
