Southport is fantastic. We moved here 19 years ago and it's a brilliant place to bring up your family. Sure the town centre is struggling not to look rundown but not many high streets have avoided this over the last few years. The villages surrounding are lovely. Churchtown, Birkdale and Ainsdale. We'll never move

This was interesting to me as my Grandmother (Florence Blagrove 1888-1980) was born in Southport, her father ran a pub there, then she & her new husband (Hurtle Daulby) migrated to Adelaide, South Australia ❤ Nanna used to take us all to the beach & she would often have a little cry about missing Southport. Thanks Tim.

On the subject of Southport and the long distance from the sea, this is due to several factors, most recently the closure of the Port of Preston and the end of dredging the River Ribble which led to the port. The result of this and the silt has meant the sandbanks have changed considerably. You mention boats between the coasts, well when Southport pier was first built in 1860 there were regular boat trips to and from Liverpool, Llandudno, Lytham, Blackpool, Fleetwood and the Isle of Man from the pier's head. The deep water channel needed by the steamers started to silt up and the pier had to be extended by over two hundred meters to reach a navigable depth again. As the years went by the silting up continued and with it the pleasure boats could no longer work out of Southport. Great work Tim!

Somehow Southport seems to have avoided the worst of the decline and depression that befell so many of our seaside resorts. I don't know whether it had a more diversified economy which allowed it to avoid falling into the traps Blackpool fell into, for example. On the other hand, since the 2008/2009 recession, there has definitely been some decline. Parts of the town centre look shabbier than when I was a kid, and there's the problem of retailers going bust and leaving empty shop units that seems to blight everywhere in the country now. Still, the area around the Marine Lake and the seafront is nice, as is Hesketh Park and Lord Street, and some parts of Southport are very wealthy.

Hi Tim, many thanks for filming my home town, I must've spent my entire childhood in this town, I remember Lord Street for shopping, Hesketh Park for a nice picnic, also interestingly, the Gallopers that you found at the start of the pier, used to be in the Pleasureland theme park, (Owned by the Silcock family) there used to be a wooden coaster, fun house, helter skelter and ghost train there also, as well as Southport Zoo, I loved it all. Also the site the Premier Inn sits on used to be an outdoor lido (Open air baths) as we used to call it, Of note, slightly further down the coast towards Liverpool, there used to be a Pontins resort as well which always looked like a POW camp to me. In the town centre is a big clock tower, I hope it's still there, I believe it's now a Morrisons supermarket, I kid you not it used to be the main Bus station for Ribble buses, I also understand that there was a rail connection there as well at one time. Honestly in its hey day it was the most glorious and lovely place to be, Southport is also home to the countries only Lawn Mower Museum, as well as the worst Football team ever. Towards Liverpool you'd pass through Birkdale (Think Golf Open) Crosby (Where the Anthony Gormley sculptures sit in the water) Formby too (Red Squirrels). I look forward to your review of the town centre, the hotels, shops and bars. So many great memories and a place were I felt I could be me, wonderful to see it all again. Thank you 'Tim the Intrepid Explorer' Aylesbury is now my home, as you know, it's a convenient place to stop on the way from Gee Tee Yarmouth towards Weymouth and Portland - I'll make sure we have the kettle on for you. TC, regards to your growing family too.

Funny you mention pontins, some pictures I took popped up on my Facebook memories this week and I said exactly the same thing, even the barbed wire fence is shaped to stop you getting out rather than in. I spent quite a bit of time in the open air swimming pool as a kid, the time broken up by 18 holes on the pitch and putt at the side of the pier

Tim, I grew up in Skelmersdale just down the road. A place worthy of a read, it has Europe’s biggest roundabout (half a mile circumference) and a golden dome where people practice TM medication. It was part of the 1960’s planned town abominations. It makes Southport look like Monte Carlo. I loved Southport as a kid though and as a result I still do. Fascinating town, lovely architecture and a glimpse into the past. I still take my son there now so he knows how life was for me as a kid 30 or so years ago. For me, we should treasure these places. They’re a shadow of their former selves but there is a certain romance all the same and we should be glad they’re not lost just yet

Great stuff Tim. I've not been to Southport since 1979. I had a friend named Amanda who sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of only 64, she helped to run a group in our local area that focusses on Autism. I help to run the group after almost a decade, and I will inform the group about this at their next meeting. Apparently Amanda left a huge amount of money in her will when she passed away, and the group have saved up this to go somewhere sometime this spring/summer season. I have chosen Southport among my choices, completely at random, and I'll most likely mention it being as I know someone in the group who knows a thing or more about model/miniature railways. My late friend Amanda came from nearby Liverpool incidentally.

I live in Southport, this was a good Vlog of the seafront, many complain about where they live but I like it here as it has MANY great places. You should have gone to Victoria Park, that is also on the sea front, just a little down from Pleasureland, they hold a massive flower show, music festivals, food festivals, RC Airplane, RC car and RC boat competitions/shows etc, they have specially built race tracks and boating areas for this. Another great park is Hesketh park, this has a Victorian era observatory, another lake, a conservatory, that is just out of the town center 5-10 min walk. Deeper into the town, in Churchtown their is another park called Botanic Gardens, that has many species of birds in an aviary, another lake for boats, a conservatory etc. Curchtown its self is old but kept well, all white small buildings/shops in the center. They also do the airshow in Southport, firework shows, as well as golf competitions on its famous golf courses. You could definitely visit again and get lots more interesting things.

If you want to do a long walk, I highly recommend the Cheshire Lines one. Some of the trackbed has vanished though or been taken over by farmers and mother nature. thanks for another great vlog.. lots of childhood memories of beautiful Southport. We used to go here every Sunday with my mates .getting the train to Liverpool Lime street.. then getting train directly to Southport. .i remember the wooden roller coaster too, omg it was so dangerous but fun too. Southport has not changed that much tbh.. its still clean and well kept as usual.. shopping there too is great.. They also have stunning parks like the Botanic Gardens with Arborteum which is must to visit...They used to host the Annnal Flower show their as well. The shells you showed us on the beach are cuttlefish shells, so its best to wear some footwear when walking on the beach. Thanks again for vlog. great work Tim

I’ve spent many happy years in Southport when I used to work in Liverpool. There are some really nice parts of Southport and some really bad areas too like anywhere really but credit to Sefton Council they are trying to keep the town clean, tidy and modern.

I went to Southport, I think in 1989 & 1990ish and participated in the '24 hour Sailing Race' on the seafront lake, with a team from Somerset. We did reasonably well, for a novice team of dingy sailors, in the first year. We went back for the second year, but it was in the aftermath of a hurricane that went up through the North Atlantic. The dingy capsized before we even crossed the start line and buried the mast top in the mud at the bottom of the lake (the lake was only 4' deep). Eventually we fixed the mast too and completed the race. My everlasting memory of these events was; The loud music provided by a succession of live rock bands from the beer tent, No sleep as a result (also caused by having to get up every four hours to crew the dingy for two hours), Being reacquainted with scotch pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy, from a nearby chip shop (the name of which I don't recall). A fantastic treat for a Southerner. Thanks for nudging the old grey matter 😁

Many-a person has been known to escape to Southport for odd weekends (on their bull or with one or two mates) to unwind/get away from annoying flatmates for a bit/etc and Southport’s never let down on that front, theme park or no theme park. Belter place indeed.

We lived in Southport for a long time. They are razor shells. Never seen so many together so maybe it's the storms. You should wear shoes on the beach. Jellyfish wash up and there can be sea urchins too. There used to be boats to Blackpool in Victorian times but because it's the entrance to the river Ribble it has silted up and isn't deep enough any more. You forgot to go to the cafe under the pier at the entrance where Elvis sings. You make the place look beautiful

Yes it's next to the crazy golf. When you see the original Victorian carousel, look towards the sea and down. There's a cafe there where people sit outside and listen to live singers (Elvis etc). Under the amusement arcade. Where you buy tickets for speedboat trips, motor boats and pedaloes on the marine lake

You missed the raised 5 inch gauge railway and the remote control car race track over behind the caravan park. Stayed there on hols at the caravan park for 2 weeks and when we arrived we heard a tannoy and thought what on earth is that and thought we would check it out. It turns out there was a massive event on with R/C cars racing each other. There was hundreds of gazebos with vans and tools and everything all for racing their R/C cars. They were saying there was National champions racing, European champions racing it seemed like a very serious event. I even decided I was gonna buy a R/C racing buggy myself when I got back from holiday and I still have it now. It's all wheel drive, individual active suspension on all 4 wheels and does about 15-20mph. All electric 👍 Love Southport, I need to visit again sometime.

So many great memories of Southport from being a child, it's a shame pleasure land isn't quite the grand place it used to be there used to be a wooden coaster called the cyclone and an inverted coaster which is now in Blackpool. Now we take my son there once or twice a year , miniature railway is good fun , model village is a little small but I think the price is reasonable and the penny arcade on the pier is something a bit different. Southport isn't without it's faults but there is not enough negative to ruin a day out or put you off visiting.

Could you do a video of Port Sunlight (on the Wirral) which is opposite side to Liverpool (over the river Mersey). Port Sunlight is a stunning award winning graded village, built by and was home to Lord Leverhulme who owned Lever Brothers and Unilever (home of Sunlight Soap, Persil etc). I'm the Wedding Planner at Christ Church, Port Sunlight and I can take you in the church. We boast the longest church ailse in the UK (which is Italian marble)! It's absolutely stunning (as is the whole village)! Port Sunlight is a hidden gem oasis not to be missed! Let me know if you'd like to see the church! Rachael!

Nice video, haven't been there since everything went t1t2 up with covid. The airshow is worth a visit if you're into aviation, park on the beach and the planes display literally right in front of you/ over your head. There used to be pleasure flights in small planes that used the beach as the runway. The chip shop at the end of the pier by the merry-go-round is a great meeting spot for bikers, there's normally loads parked up there.
