I was born in Christiana Hartley nursing home in 1940. We lived at 120 Rufford Rd, and both my sisters went to St John’s school. For some reason I was sent to Churchtown school when the time came. My father worked at Brockhouse (?) right through the war and he belonged to ‘Dad’s Army’. He had some hilarious stories I believe. We left Crossens in 1950, and emigrated to Australia. We returned in 1955, to live in Birkdale. I left Birkdale in 1963, to travel the world. In 1973, my husband, daughter, and myself came back to live in Southport, and at 82, I’m still here. Must be bred in me!

Aye, another Sandgrounder here! When a public house of the same name opened on Lord St, and a Southport Microbrewery created a blond ale they named it 'Sandgrounder'. On the event of the opening and introduction of said ale I made it my business to pay the place a visit. As I took my first sip I said to the barman "It's quite a rare thing for me, having been born in Southport at St Kathrine's and having lived here all my life, to be stood in the pub known as the Sandgrounder and drinking an ale of the same name it feels somehow like a neatly tied up story with a certain element of satisfaction to it. He stared at me blankly, and walked off to server another customer. Funny really, if you aren't a Sandgrounder you probably don't get it!

I lived 175 Rufford Road until until 1963. It used to have a stream running next to it. Now ridge close. I went to crosses school. I remember going into the little sweet shop opposite the school and buying suger mice with a string tail. Obviously home made and have wonderful memories of most of the points of interest that you so masterfully pointed out. Wonderful work sir. God bless you .

Superb narration & research .. i lived Cobden rd 1962 & had a punch up with a decendant of the Johnson mob Churchtown in the botanic gardens who were mentioned here .

Southport use to be a great place it really was . Its a shame its gone to waste now it really is its sad to see how depressing the town center has gone .

It is happening in all towns, its called progress mainly because of internet shopping taking over!! Go take another look at how Southport (once again) is rising from the ashes - it is too special a town to go under completely!

Well it is bad now nowhere near as good as it was and many say so so yeah the town centre is awful

@@iancasey704 Guess you are concentrating The town centre itself? I am looking at the towns new developments/ideas ie Investment into Pleasureland, Kings Gardens re-developed, Development of New Theatre site, Debenhams where work has begun, Lord St huge another huge development, told it was a new idea, workmen in there already, possibly the wall climbing thingy? Grand Theatre re-developed. Plans afoot for the pier (hopefully we can retain same). Southport is definitely not what it was with its blooming flower beds/borders etc, if not for volunteers we would have alot less of these. Of course these were preferable to the shabby bedsits we have now, homeless on the streets etc etc, however I will not diss a town who despite everything is still riding high in many ways!

But there is a similar conservatory structure in that place where that one is in the botanic gardens. Did they try to replace it? This is lovely do you have any more? Do you have high park area or Formby?
