As soon as you explained adsorption I was hooked into watching and liking. So many do not care about such nuances but I love them and the other tidbits you offered as well. Now if only someone would do a video that oh so casually explained “in passing” to people the difference between processes of inductive reasoning versus deductive!

Hi there, I’m from England, and have recently been inspired to save silver coins - mainly those attributed to the many monarchs of England. I got the bug to do this after purchasing a silver sixpence from the reign of Elizabeth 1, which was a present to my wife on our recent Silver Wedding Anniversary. Anyway, I intend to store my collection in a natural wooden coin box, featuring trays for 90 coins. I will be using silica gels to protect my growing collection, so this video was just what I needed to learn about a topic which I previously knew very little about. I think you did a brilliant job of letting me know all I really need to know about silica gels, yet did it in a no-nonsense, entertaining manner - so many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Also the worlds first black man to use scales to weigh silica gel. The brand is GDDEALER tho so at least he know's his heritage. Double digits too what can I say black people are precise. Looks like it has a light too so you can weigh up at night good for the younger blacks, obviously the older ones they weighing up keys you aint doin that in the back of a car. They also weigh up money, when they get a million dollars or a couple hundred thousand they don't count it they weigh it, they work out the weight of one rubber band calculate how many rubber bands and the weight of the bag and then they weigh it, none of that scarface money counter remember that scene where they are there for hours on end with the money counter?

An alternative to it might be, you can get one of the filament dryers meant for 3D printing filament drying, and put the bags in there at 155-160F/70C for 2-3 hours, alternatively food dehydrators in theory do the exact same (just make sure to not put them directly on heating elements in either case lol)

Or you can make your own gel packets. Items needed: a bag of cat litter: the kind with a single ingredient - silica gel (of course) do not use any other type. Knife teaspoon Cutting board a small bag of coffee filters stapler with staples. 1) lay a filter flat open on a cutting board and cut in half 2) put a teaspoon or so of silica gel in one of the half filters 3) fold the half filter, gently shake the silica down. Fold again and gently shake: repeat until the filter is well folded and then just staple up the open end. Done.... No oven needed No reason to weigh it No water testing needed But you can always ask your cat 🐈 if the cat litter (silica) will be of any use for soaking up liquids...

I tried that with coffee filters. Then I switched to tea bags. Cleaner, no staples. I tried the ones that fold over and ones with draw strings. I did not like the draw strings so I simply glued the bags closed. Neat and clean.

It is quite annoying when people quote temperatures in degrees without giving the units. Anyway, I found the following on Wikipedia: "Once saturated with water, the gel can be regenerated by heating it to 120 °C (250 °F) for 1-2 hours. Some types of silica gel will "pop" when exposed to enough water. This is caused by breakage of the silica spheres when contacting the water." So this answered my fort question (you must have used Fahrenheit), but the "popping" was interesting since it also explains your "water" test - suggesting you are actually destroying the silica gel if you drop in in water (a senseless test anyway, since then it is wet anyway).

Followed this to a T and it didn't work that well at all, maybe the heat is too low at 200 degrees F. I read you can just leave them in the sun for 24 hrs, which is easier, doesn't use electricity and doesn't heat up my house during the summer! Alternatively, I am going to try to make my own silica packets using crystal cat litter.

So how important are silica gels really? I only have 5 silver eagles that are exposed to air.
@SouthsideStacker
@SouthsideStacker 6 жыл бұрын
For coins, they are very important (with capsules or tubes), you want as little contamination as possible to be able to display them and hold their premium. For bullion, not as important because you'll most likely always get close to spot for them in any condition. The cool thing is, silver eagles are "bullion coins" so you can keep them in open air or store them as a collectible because they fall in both categories. But I would advise to keep your bullion stored with the same importance as high premium coins because you never know how "value" will be assessed in the future. One example is the JM bars (Johnson Matthey). Now that the company no longer exists, the JM bars kept in better condition might be considered more valuable in the future.
