This is really great info, I have the Spyder xl with 35# limbs and 45# limbs, and I was looking at the ghost because I was wanting a longbow style, and the fact I can save $100 and just buy the ghost limbs is awesome

Another great video, your efforts are very much appreciated. I think I’m going to have to look at gifting myself one of these bows, assuming Southwest archery ship to the UK, I really like the look of the Spyder XL riser with the longbow limbs, and it seems to shoot very well for you. Thanks again, and have a very happy thanksgiving.

Thank you for the comment, my friend I appreciate your time. I am not sure if SWA does international shipping, but it never hurts to check. I was surprised by the results of the experiment. I believe I will leave the setup as-is for now. I have been impressed with the two bows I have purchased from them. Agree with you on the look of the XL. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving as well my friend. Best regards,

The Southwest Spyder XL is sold as the Black sheep nova in the UK and the 62 inch version is sold as the Cartel epic hawk, the 64 inch Black sheep nova seems to be more readily available than the Epic Hawk. Not sure if you can get the longbow limbs here however, they're probably sold under yet another name.

@@Alex1M6 thanks for the information, I’ll look them both up today, definitely a bow I’d like to take a closer look at, much appreciated.

@@chroniclesofahalfwit No problem. Also according to what I've read online the limbs on the sage and spyder/black sheep/epic hawk are all interchangeable with each-other so you could mix and match them with your sage. I've not tried it myself however as I don't have a sage.

Just wondering how you thought it felt and if there was any added vibration or awkwardness… I also agree with you I think it looks so much better how you swapped them out… great idea as far as aesthetics go, it looks great! Keep up the awesome videos sir!

Hi Scott, Another thoroughly enjoyable video. I like that you are a bit like me and like to experiment with different bow set ups. I have a KG Osprey one piece bow which was my pride and joy until it got damaged and is now only fit for decorating my wall. I'm not sure if they are sold in the USA as they are hand made in Nottingham, England. When that got damaged about 9 months ago I bought a Whitefeather Starling 19 inch ILF riser and matched it to a pair of Mybo Star medium limbs ( 68 inch on a 25 inch riser.) They are marked at 30 pounds so give me a 36/37 pound draw weight at 28 inch draw. I love this bow and it shoots really well. (As well as I can make it shoot) lol. I also recently bought a dozen Gold Tip Hunter arrows to shoot with it and they are holding up really well in the woods. I hate it when those trees jump in front of my arrows. Keep the videos coming Scott and stay safe and well.

Hey Graham, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I ahd fun with this experiment and plan on leaving them setup like this. That's a bummer for your bow my friend. I have an older Pearson bow that split where the riser and limb meet, it's a wall decoration as well. How do you like the ILF? I've toyed with the idea of one, but never seem to connect the dots and get one. My nemesis is rocks, they show up out of nowhere lol. It would probably help if I would make a proper target to stand and get them off the ground. Brother I really appreciate your time. I hope.you have a wonderful evening! Best regards

@@ScottWinters Hi Scott. I like the ILF because if I want to go to a heavier or lighter draw weight there are so many options on limbs. Got to be careful not to get Hoyt Formula limbs though. As you know I shoot with friends in a wood and when we started out we made our own targets after watching the following video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHjWdnWtnrCheas They are so cheap to make. The sack type cost about $1.00 per coffee sack from ebay and the plastic filling cost absolutely nothing. Bedding shops are only too grateful to have you take it off their hands. They are very light and manouverable too. Take care.

Hi. What type of material do you use in the limb pockets to cut down on noise? Another question: The nocks on your arrows look like they are inserted into the shaft and not glued on the outside. If I see right, how can you replace nocks? Are they screwed in? If glued, how do you get a broken nock out of the arrow? Thanks. rb BTW I enjoy your videos. I am saving them as favorites while I learn more about all the stuff that is new to me and revisit all the stuff I forgot since my last bow shooting days in 1973. OK, I'll trim my beard, so the string doesn't catch it.🤔
@ScottWinters Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and questions. The limb pockets are bare on this one. I have used very thin leather or felt to line them. Either work well and do not cause any issues with how the limbs fit. I use standard gold tip GT nocks they are inserted into the arrow shaft. I do not glue them in. As long as your nocks are correct for the inside diameter of your arrow shafts they won’t fall out or become loose. If you break one they pull out by hand. I really appreciate your time. Thank you for the kind words my friend. I am glad you are enjoying my content. A long beard could definitely cause an issue. Have a great day. Best regards

I need a 40# longbow, is this one maybe for sale, that Ghost sounds nice? I had to return my Black Hunter longbow because the riser pins, holes whatever, where not evenly made, so the limbs were crooked and the string off line. I'm hesitant to order another. Have you heard of the Mandarin Duck Devour I think its called? Its a 2 piece takedown, might make for a good review. Id want it if I could afford it. Thanks for the vids

Hey Scott, thought I would let you in on something I did on my ghost riser and 62 inch recurve limbs. With a b55 string on it and a 9/16 nock height brace at 7-7/8. I’m shooting 500 spine carbons with 200 up front good groups at 15-18 yards. Got into tillering on my ILF hunter rig, and found a 3/16 to 1/4 + upper tiller brought groups on that bow to 3 touching consistently. So… got a plastic tapered shim at Home Depot usually for carpentry and inserted on upper limb pocket. Perfect width, and trim from thin end. creating a nearly 1/4 positive tiller. This bow has a smoother, EVEN draw, and groups are much tighter if I do my part of course. I shoot split finger and thought I would share since you experiment as well. Rich

Man that's awesome comment, very insightful. I've often wondered if you could use some thing like that to affect the tiller. I really appreciate you sharing that. It looks like the limb is not flush with the rest at the seat. Is that correct? I just received new limbs from Southwest Archery, 35 lbs to swap with the stock 45 lb limbs. The thicker end of the 45 lbs sit flush with the riser, but the new 35 lb limbs seat a good 3/32 of an inch lower than the adjacent riser surface. Is that something that's is endemic of Southwest limbs or all limbs of different poundage?
@ScottWinters2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and question. I think the answer may be that the lower the limb weight, the less mass it would be. Reducing the thickness would be the way to drop the draw weight. I'm definetly gonna check mine and get back to you with what I find. I appreciate your time! I'll get back to you soon my friend. Best regards

I recently found myself in this exact situation when I accidentally bought 40 lbs longbow limbs instead of recurve limbs for my Spyder XL. I've decided to keep the longbow limbs so it's good to know that someone else has had a good experience with it. As for brace height, I was shooting ~8.75" on the recurve limbs and, without adjustment, it's ~7.75" with the longbow limbs. You mentioned brace height in this video, so I'm wondering if you had a chance to experiment with it for the longbow limbs on the Spyder XL, and what you found to work well. Not sure if this matters, but I use a SAS Flemish Fast Flight 16-strand string. Thanks.
@ScottWinters2 жыл бұрын
Glad it worked out for you my friend. I liked the swap myself. Shoots well and looks good to boot. I never experimented with the brace height. I meant to but for some reason did not. I think the reason I didn't was because both setups shot well with just the swap. I think I would take each ones recommended brace height and land somewhere in the middle and adjust to your shooting style. Maybe start at eight inches and check how it shoots. Check for excessive or pronounced hand shock, erratic arrow flight, etc. That will be your best indicator of where you should be with it. Please check back with me on what you find works best. I really appreciate your time my friend. Have a great evening. Best regards.

Great video! I have 2 questions: 1) do you need to change the length of the string when you switch from longbow to recurve limbs? 2) what string would you recommend ( brand and type) for both types of limbs. Thank you again for your videos!
@ScottWinters2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your time and the question. That's a great question and something I didn't think about when I made the video. You might not need to change the string because they are both 64 inches in overall length. Just different configurations. I swapped between the bows for each particular setup, and that's probably why I didn't think about it. Strung type depends on what you are looking for in performance. I highly recommend BCY Dynaflight 97 (fast flight) for both. The only thing about fast flight is that it acts like a jack hammer, because there is little to no stretch in the string and it transfers a lot of energy to the nock of the arrow. This can throw off your arrow tuning a little and create a weak dynamic spine in otherwise perfectly tuned arrows. If fast flight is not to your liking I use BCY Dacron B55. Very low stretch or creep and holds up well. If you are interchanging string material you may have to add or remove front end weight to get a good dynamic spine. I made a video about this oddity that goes into more detail. I appreciate your time my friend and hope you have a great evening. Best regards

Thanks for doing the limb swap. I've been eyeing the ghost for quite awhile. And now seeing it with the recurve limbs, it's moved up my buy list. Did you add felt to the limb pockets? I ask because it seemed quieter than on your original review.
@ScottWinters3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your time my friend. I really like the Ghost and have not had a negative thing to say about in the time I've owned it. I really like the looks after the swap as well, and it still shoots great. I did not add any felt to the limb pockets. I still need to, but haven't gotten around to it. If you do get one let me know how it works out for you. I hope you have a great evening. Best regards

Thanks for the content. For a beginner what is a good kit for 6,1 guy ? Thanks
@ScottWinters Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. At 6 1 I would look for a bow that is at least 64 inches in length. The SWA Spyder XL is a great bow coming in at 64 inches. Also, it won’t break the bank. Not sure what your draw length would be. I’m 5 10 and my draw length is 30 inches. You definitely want to find a bow that you can shoot comfortably. I’ve had a few bows that were short and just felt cramped to shoot. Let me know what you decide on. Have a great evening. Best regards
