It's a combination of 2 things. 1) Airplanes only make money in the air. An airplane sitting at the gate is not earning any money. So SWA tries to keep their airplanes in the air as much as possible and off the ground as much as possible. Their fast turn times are a way of doing that. In the early days of the company, money was so tight they had to sell one of their first airplanes, but they didn't want to reduce their schedule, so by minimizing ground time for the remaining airplanes, they were able to keep the original schedule. The second part of it is partially related to the first. To encourage SWA pilots to be more efficient, and more importantly, be LESS INEFFIEIENT, than the other airlines, the way they are paid is slightly different. Most airlines pay their pilots by the hour, but for every extra minute they're taxiing (like a snail) the clock is running for their pay. So an American or United pilot who taxis like a 1 eyed grandmother driving to church can milk the system for extra pay. SWA pilots will still get paid for long taxi delays, but generally, it's in their interest to have less block time rather than more block time per leg, which is the opposite of the legacy airlines. The legacy pilots will market their abysmally slow taxi speeds as "Safety" but in reality, they're just trying to run up their pay.
