@@SovereignOne if the creation of life was possible on this earth (us being a speck of dust in the universe) then why wouldn’t it be possible in other planets? If the earth truly is one of a kind, then shouldn’t we take way better care of it then?
@SovereignOne3 жыл бұрын
@@barsxsalicia Possible and probable are different things. It could just be that the unlikelihood of abiogenesis to occur is a larger number than all the habitable places in the universe. You have to realize humans are barely out of the jungle. We are taking care of Earth as much as our capabilities allow and the information we have now is something we didn't have a century before when we started burning fossil fuels. We will take care of it better and better as we go along as it is evident now. We are only a decade or so away from replacing fossil fuels entirely.

I assume you are talking about intelligent alien life forms as smart or smarter than us, inquisitive enough to search for other life. To say such life form exists definitively is very difficult. It would've been very easy if life was "designed". But the very fact that we came here just by random evolution over billions of years makes the probability very hard to calculate. Add to that other random extinction events and odd are stacked against the chance of intelligent life form evolving naturally. Also you need to consider the great barriers life had to overcome to evolve from a unicellular organism to the complex humans we are today. A small change in history like a supernova explosion near us could've made us lesser-intelligent beings swimming in the sea. Also, If you replay the same process again, there is little chance life will evolve into a highly intelligent form because that is what random mutation and nonrandom selection is all about. And then there is the limitation of physics as we know it now which makes it impossible for any life form to travel beyond the galaxy local group. If you think about it, you cannot find two identical grains of sands in the whole world with the same shape, size, mass and chemical composition. Your experience (as in many alien sightings) and beliefs don't stand a chance in the scrutiny of scientific method of deduction, analysis, theorizing and falsifiability. Scientists are looking for human inhabitable planets. At one point of time sun will turn into a red giant and engulf earth with no option for humans but to find a different region in the galaxy to live. Or even before that there could be another extinction event that will force us to take the drastic step of abandoning our home. These researches by scientists are paving the first step towards that eventuality. Finding other life form is just an added bonus in the way. Till then I'm honored - to be here, to be able to see the beauty of it, to try to understand the enormity of the universe and to be a part of it.
@JustinLHopkins3 жыл бұрын
I agree. It’s profoundly ignorant and the height of human arrogance to claim that we are. We only achieved flight a mere century ago and we can barely even manage to get ourselves into low earth orbit with any efficiency. The point is that we’re far too technologically immature to make such vast and all knowing conclusions. There could be a civilization that’s technologically on par with Rome within 20 LY and we’d never know. Place a civilization on our level on the other side of the Milky Way and it’s more than likely that we’ll both die out without ever knowing our galactic neighbor. Thinking we’re alone in the 21st century is like dipping a cup into the ocean and then declaring whales don’t exist. While looking at Hubble’s deep field, the thought of being alone becomes incomprehensible. We’re also made of the most abundant materials in the universe and life on earth came about rather quickly, so it seems absurd to me that life would have only arisen once. We know life can easily establish itself under the right conditions because we’re here, so the real question is how often does simple life evolve into intelligent life?

There is a massive error in this program. It completely fails to mention the "WOW" signal. It hasn't ever been explained. And this program doesn't even bring it up ?
@SovereignOne3 жыл бұрын
We don't know what it was and since it came from over 90 light years away, it's going to take a long time to hope for a repeat signal. One signal doesn't mean anything. The signal they detected recently from Proxima Centauri region is more interesting (if it isn't simply of terrestrial origin) since we can get a repeat in a few years (4+ years) instead of 90 years. If we don't get a repeat in either then that's that. It's most likely just a natural phenomena.
@HardRockMiner3 жыл бұрын
@@SovereignOne - "most likely" ?? So you're saying you have no idea what it is ? Exactly ! To not only not mention the "Wow" signal, but to say that an FRB from 2007 is the first signal we've gotten is just wrong. How they forgot the 1977 "Wow" signal is beyond me, but that is what happened. That signal is way more interesting and thought provoking than an FRB.
@SovereignOne3 жыл бұрын
@@HardRockMiner If you read again I say it right at the beginning - "We don't know what it was". Calm down, will you? You're so agitated. If it repeats THEN we can make conclusions. No repeat, most likely natural. You see, I don't make sweeping statements about knowing exactly what something is if I don't have any proof. There is no proof of it being an artificially made signal by an alien species nor that it is a natural phenomena. We simply have to wait for a possible repeat. The universe is full of signals and the Earth even more, so there's no way of knowing what it is without multiple instances because it is so short and could be anything else of natural origin. A "WOW" doesn't mean it's aliens as it's too short and could be anything. Now if you get a signal and can decode it as "WOW, we might be alone in the universe so we are sending this signal out to see if we get a response. We are xyz from the xyz system, xyz is our parent star..." THEN you can say, aha we have aliens even without a repeat.

Everytime the Artificial Intelligence says "Home", I shivers. Knowing that it's practically a robot or setted up "individual", but represents a dream of generations of scientists, space enthusiasts and maybe, possibly, Humanity's search for life or to answer "Are we alone?" Oh and, the woman-sounding French accent really fits the Artificial Intelligence.

Probably the most riveting documentary I have ever seen. Amazing to see people who are so excited and enthusiastic about their work after spending years and entire lifetimes taking mankind out of this world. When I was born mankind was busy developing rockets intended to destroy. We have evolved mentally at an unprecedented rate. Too bad we are deteriorating politically just about as fast. 100 years ago man developed the means to fly in the atmosphere. The sky is no longer the limit.
@SovereignOne2 жыл бұрын
Very true. It's saddening that these tyrannical and arcane political systems of enslavement and control are keeping us back from evolving into a more loving, benign beings. I hope we can free ourselves and reach our full potential at last.

The sky may be "no longer the limit" but man is stuck in low earth orbit (400 miles up) until someone invents the technology to go beyond that. "Space travel is essentially science fiction"............ William Shatner.

If the law of Moore applies to astronomy, in 2153, human beings will have already discovered thanks to observatories and flying robots which planet will be able to sustain life close to Mother Earth.. No need to send a sophisticated ship to prove the existence of life then. The biggest challenge will be to send human being on long distances voyage to seed other planets...in the meantime, let’s hope Mother Earth will be to sustain life if the law of Moore applies to pollution...

There are no planets close to mother earth, other than those of the solar system. If robots were launched today, they would not even be a quarter of the way to the nearest star by 2153.

This is one of, if not my favorite space documentaries of all time. So many amazing scientists and science communicators. I fall asleep to this daily. But not because of boredom. There were many months I couldn’t fall asleep because the context was so exciting. It’s soothing and relaxing and educational. The only people I feel would have made this the best space documentary of all time would have been the addition of one or two of the following, Brian Cox, Brian Green, Michio ,Jill Tarter and David Kipping. Obviously Kipp Thorn and Laurence Krause as well. Maybe Jason Wright from my Alma mater Still incredible regardless

Couldn't agree with you more! I've watched it many times also. Potential interstellar space travel will likely be well after my lifetime which makes me sad although it is very possible that I'll witness proof of exoplanet life by Webb's atmospheric analysis. Absolutely magnificient. Thank you for sharing. Perhaps this will assist us in changing our views from those of the entertainment world, and allow us to talk in terms of "other life forms" vs merely alien. Even better, it may help us to do more than merely diminish our differences as a species and accentuate our similarities, and work to learn, acknowledge and appreciate our differences while accentuating our similarities. Excellent work by all involved.
