Soviet emblem cut from Ukraine's Motherland Monument on historic day

Ukraine's capital Kyiv is getting ready to say goodbye the country's most prominent remnant of the Soviet past, a huge Hammer and Sickle emblazoned on a shield held by a huge statue towering over the city.
Industrial climbers working on Sunday (July 30) on top of the 62-metre Motherland statue, Europe's highest, cut off and brought to the ground one of the two wreaths of emmer wheat featuring above hammer and sickle.
The traditional Soviet emblem will be replaced by a tryzub (trident) a three pronged emblem of Ukraine that has been welded by metal workers in the Ukrainian capital. It will replace Hammer and Sickle in time for August 24, Ukraine's Independence Day.

I completely understand where your coming from but it's history and it should be preserved. I think Ukraine and all other former Soviet occupied nations should move the Soviet era relics and artifacts to museums and rebrand such monuments like the motherland statue.

Actually, this is smarter. Their families were used to help make the monument, instead of destroying it, they are just updating it. There is a cool elevator in the arm that can move sideways apparently and the view is very Statue of Liberty 🗽 like. Apparently only a President can give permission to use it. Saw an interview where a British Soldier volunteered and got to go up the arm as a thanks for his help….he said it was a real privilege to do so. You can’t erase the past, because then you can’t learn from it. But you can update it sometimes. Make it your own. Plus it saves on costs.

I am greatly against destroying memorials and historical monuments. It’s a terrible problem these days and ignorance and choosing feelings over facts is the cause, but for this circumstance the motherland monument is about Ukraine’s national identity and ww2 memorials at the bottom of the statue are protected by law and the Soviet symbol was made for communist oppression. They’re keeping the statue, but adding Ukraine’s symbol and removing Stalin’s. I approve. 🇺🇦

it is called a "tryzub" which sort of translates to "three-tooth". Its origins are so ancient its a bit mysterious even to Ukrainians. Variations of the tryzub can be found on coins as far as 1000 years old. The original resembles Turkic style tamgas symbols that were used for royalty. It has also been linked to the shape of a diving bird/kestrel. Although Moscow (falsely) claims they descended from Kyivan-Rus' kingdom, there is zero evidence of the tryzub or any trident in Russian symbolism throughout history. It is a very powerful single piece of evidence, alongside with the existence of the Ukrainian language that we have nothing to do with the country of Russia

The ussr would have been wiped out if not for the sacrifices of the west.. including Britain.. sending then tanks and aircraft when we could ill afford them.. in fact many of the aircraft were more modern than the ones our FAA had on its escort carriers during the Kola run.. many of our men died to deliver this equipment and supplies of all kinds and rations were tight and maintained long after hostilities..

Before this invasion, many Ukrainians spoke Russian as a first language due to Soviet influence before and after WW2. Now many are trying to learn Ukrainian and are transiting to slowly ditching the Russian. You don’t learn a new language overnight. Especially the older folk.

You are right this is a monument to those who fell in defence of kiev (1941) and liberation of kiev (1943) there were russians , ukrainians , bellarusians , kazakhs...... in the red army and they were under the red banner
