"Mother-heroine" is included in the list of the highest titles in Russia. In the same row - "Hero of Russia" and "Hero of Labor". The holders of these titles enjoy preferential medical care, free treatment in sanatoriums, preferential prosthetics and the provision of medicines.

After 1973, it became possible to reward women who adopted orphans during and after the war. In particular, the order was received by Bahri Akramova, who adopted 15 children - she did not have her own. Some women received the title posthumously, such as Alexandra Derevskaya.

My grandma had one of these medals. She had 9 children. Her name was Nuraniya. She has lived all her life in the countryside. She was ethnically Tatar. Very hardworking woman. She worked all her life on a collective farm. Remembering her, I think, how people in the past had so much strength and energy to work at such a hard job and still raise a lot of children? I have one child, and sometimes I get so tired. One child is not easy, but 9... 😮

i am so conflicted about this. 10 children is a serious health hazard, meaning that a woman should be given care instead of being held up as an example for other women to follow. but also i love that reproductive labour is being acknowledged and valued. i hope all the receivers got to live a healthy life, where they were cared for and respected by their closest people.

are there any sources on how cultural attitudes or norms had changed after such a drastic reduction in population from WW2?, like it shouldn't be expected that people think of family or relationships as the same after 1/6th of the population is taken away, yet we never really hear of what their perspectives are, at least in the west
@theaconite1400
@theaconite1400 Жыл бұрын
I don't know of any sources but it's an interesting question. My knowledge of WWII is limited so I could easily be wrong about this but I get the impression that most of the Soviet people who died were Ukrainian and Polish (because geography). So changes to cultural attitudes due to exposure to death might have only existed in the western parts of the USSR. Although the effects to the economy I'm sure affected cultural attitudes across the country.

One thing that was definitely there, was a pathological phobia of war throughout the whole nation. Arguably, this post-traumatic mindset was a factor in letting the Soviet partocracy usurp power and ultimately restore capitalism - people were so traumatized by the war that they just didn't have any more will to fight, neither domestic counter-revolutionaries nor foreign imperialism. From a more practical perspective, there was the massive demographic pit created by the war, which can be traced even to this day (however, the pit caused by the dissolution of the USSR is just as massive as the one from the Nazi invasion)

@@theaconite1400 you're partially correct - the most suffered republic was belorussian where 1/3 of all population was destroyed, russian and ukranian ssr also suffered casualties in millions, there even saying that "every returned to a house with someone missing", and that only at best, many had nowhere and noone to return to at all.

From one not-till-the-moment-reliable source, it is said that entire villages just had no men in marriageable age left, and the losses of male soldiers were staggering to the point that Russia have a gender imbalance to this day (there is more woman then men in Russia), so Stalin decided to "gift" soldiers without families and single, housing and jobs in those places, and told them to "do their duty for the Motherland", and because there was less man than woman in those places, you can reach the conclusion of this...

I personally thing this is blatantly sexist. Does it not imply that a woman’s worth can be measured in the number of children she produces. It answers the question, who is a good or virtuous mother/provider/female citizen? By highlighting her ability to reproduce life and labour.

The Soviets didn't have the Atomic Family model. Women had a very solid role in society
@north9810
@north9810 Ай бұрын
I don't believe this is blatantly sexist. Women had access to other paths of success and recognition. The Soviet union handed out awards for all kinds of stuff, such as a pin for being a master of hemp production. Women in the USSR had greater opportunities to pursue academia and athletics as opposed to their western counterparts where in they'd have the opportunity to get awards and medals in academia, athletics, their workplaces etc. Additionally the tremendous amount of effort it takes to raise a single child let alone SEVEN children is worth celebration. Women who choose to undertake the path of motherhood should have their incredible contributions to society celebrated just as one would be celebrated for advancing science, medicine, art, etc.
@Jamhael1

*read this in a Russian accent* In Soviet Union, woman are not treated as only housewife - she can be soldier, factory worker, scientist, astronaut, and mother. It is all a matter of choice. And if she choose to be mother of Red Army batallion, who are you to question her?

My Breton grandparents each belonged to a family of 11, or close to it. It's a pretty normal level before contraception and the fall in infant mortality (+ 1 generation, as there's a bit of a lag in the adaptation of human behaviour, given that one's level of scarcity in childhood seems to be what dictates the goal for the number of children one will have). In the case of the Soviet Union we're precisely in that +1 generation gap, and of course the War had created an important demographic deficit, so that would have sounded perfectly normal at the time. Interestingly, in France, which had its demographic transition very early during the XIXth century, some regions were still outliers and there was the rivalry with Prussia and later Germany, which led to the tradition (in order to encourage natality) that the 14th child (and the following ones) can have the President of the Republic as their godfather. This was still in use by the 1970s.

I mean my grandma was born in 1937, Netherlands and became the eldest of 11 other siblings. Considering the medal was established in the 1940s, such a large family was far from unheard of, and it was heavily encouraged as a means to recover from the devastation of the Second World War. We live in a different time today no doubt, but I’m not too shocked by these medals

The Germans wanted to make my Aryans to get the population high enough to deal with an eventual race war with Asia. The soviets lost twenty million people and needed to recover. You could not do it in the Soviet Union and become a doctor or scientist you couldn't do that in Germany.
