Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine is rapidly depleting its Soviet-era weapons stockpiles. With massive losses in tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery, Russia is struggling to replace these with refurbished Soviet reserves, writes The Economist. Experts predict a critical depletion of these reserves by mid-2025.

I remember when Oryx started his Twitter account to document OSINT evidence of heavy weapons losses on both sides of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He didn't expect it to become such a big, life-changing project. From the beginning, he maintained a logical, professional approach to his work. I admire and greatly appreciate his personal investment in the critical work he does.

This is what happens when a national leader surrounds himself only with people who tell him what he wants to hear. As is always the case, it goes poorly. The world is tired of endless wars and looks for leadership and cooperation among nations. Russia may be a very long time in recovering from this tragedy.

They are constantly pulling more and more T-62's and rely on them on assaults because their "good" tanks are almost depleted.

About 2 years, that is, until it goes down all the way to zero. But then there also is the quality of the tanks left. Their "good" tanks have about run out, they only have the modern tanks they produce fresh (which are nothing compared to their losses.) They almost do not have any more T-80's left in storage (down 1000 pieces) and do not have any T-90's left in storage. These two types made up nearly 25% of their reserves before the war. Now a mere 8%. The amount of their "decent" tanks left, which should also include the T-72B model (the reserves of which have halved) is 20% of all, compared to 38% before the war. Nearly 40% of tanks left in their reserves are T-62's and T-54/55's. Russia hasn't managed to significantly increase production since the war began, their production is still nowhere near their losses and the situation will remain so in the foreseeable future (due to their enormous loss rate.)

people are quick to forget that the warsaw pact had 50k tanks and hundreds of thousands of armored vehicles, many of which are surely mothballed. 8% of the GDP seems like a fairly low number for a war effort, especially on-going. It either shows that Russia has more econmic issues and infrastructure construction to do, or that they're prossibly experimenting with their efforts. They aren't necessarily winning in the effectiveness of their production and strategy to sell what they make as superior equipment, later- which I am sure isn't going to help those that intended to make a profit without the buyer consider what they're purchasing and why. Banking on nukes is pretty stupid.

This projection of depletion is a little too optimistic. First it only looks at storage far away from the front, not weapons that have been in combat, have been damaged and are under repair. Also while production of new equipment isnt enough to replace what has been lost, it is still significant. Finally all this ignores what weapons exist outside of Russia that the Kremlin can buy. Right now they are buying ammo from North Korea, who's to say tanks won't be next? Same with places like Syria and Belarus. Will these tanks be any good? Not really but Russia is fighting a war based on quantity of equipment and troops, not quality. Given all that I would add at least another two years on projections that "Russia is running out" so mid 2027. It is an open question of if Ukraine can last that long and what the front lines will look like.

Well, clearly it hasn't been enough to keep their military production up and running because their tank and armoured vehicle production rates have been nowhere near enough to replace their losses. We do have visual evidence (through satellite imagery) that their tank reserves, which by the way were deemed endless by many before the war, have gone down to less than 60% of its pre-war amount. More importantly, most of what remains are decades old unmodernised Soviet trash (like T-54/55 and T-62) and their decent tanks have almost run out. They have but 16% of the MT-LB's they had before the war.
