Here in the west, the Soviet contribution to WWII, the major contribution, is still largely unknown. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer, tells the tale for any of those of us here in the West that care to read it.

The expression "killer" comes from the verry many victims of this plane, and the term "jewl" comes from the advanced inginerics used on this plane for that time.

The Germans laerned early in the war that dogfigthing as such rarely had a good ehange ration even when your planes were generally superior, while the boom and zoom gave the best exhange ratio for the least danger. It was not the germans couldn't or wouldn't make good dogfighters, they just thought that it couldn't pay if the payoff were to big.

@trunikov Red army used Pe-2 to bomb factories. They were very fast, but in small numbers, and had a small payload. According to German reports, Russian bombing destroyed less than 1% of factories. Russian bombing was ineffective towards factories. They had some, but small, success with oil reserves. Russias military losses: Over 11 million Germanies military losses: Over 7 million U.S.A military losses: Under 300,000.

You may believe what ever you like. But the fact is Luftwaffe had the most stringent system to verify kills, of any airforce. I haven't seen anybody disprove luftwaffe records. And general consensus is that they were pretty accurate until the last days of war. Stalin himself put bounty on Hartman and Rudel. Allied aces didn't get too many kills beacause they were rotated back for training duties after their tour. While Germans had no such comfort.

@TheRealHawkeye Sorry, but on D-day there were around 60 German divisions in France, compared to the over 240 German divisions on the huge Eastern Front. Look that up in any good book written about WW2. Please do. That was the main front of the war as far as Hitler and Nazi Germany was concerned. You can rebuild German planes, factories (using slave labor from occupied countries) and bridges, but you cannot replace German lives. 80% of all German casualties were on the Eastern Front.

This is the early A-4 version that is tested. By 1943 the LW recieved the A-5 which was more stable and improved engine cooling (versions up to A-4 had problems with cooling and lateral stability). What is said in the video about the A-4 is true but the 190 saw extensive development throughout the war. The late-war A-8 was much better armored and packed heavier armament with a more powerful engine.

@BossHiggs The terms of Lend-Lease generally required no payment. Most materials were essentially gifts, and the US considered them consumables. Large durables like ships were supposed to be returned. Roosevelt famously said you don't charge your neighbor for a hose hen his house is burning at the announcement. I don't know of the USSR refusing to return any ships, but at the end of the war the UK bought a large quantity of what would have been Lend-Lease materials at 10% face value.

Fascinating piece of footage! The FW 190 A-4 shown belonged to Uffz. Helmut Brandt of 2./J.G. 54, and was captured on the 16th of January 1943 near Schlüsselburg. At the end of the film there is a reference to the Ju-87. Did the Soviets make similar films for all of the German aircraft that they captured?

@AngrySemite the main point here if you had been able to hold out long enough the british would have sent a force to help, the fact is you outnumbered the germans with 30 active divisions,10 reserve and 12 calvary but the main problem was you were trying to fight like it was 200 yrs earlier. The germans had mobile equipment that revolutionized modern warfare and your army and airforce had incredibly out of date equipment, which the french and in some ways the english were to find out themselves

@TheRealHawkeye Another fact is that German military production was on top in 1944, despite the bombings. You see the Germans quickly rebuilt their factories, and moved much of the production to the countryside, underground bunkers and secret locations not known to the allies. It has been said that the heavy bombers damaged German weapon production 20%, 30% tops. Even the allies realized this pretty soon, that just bombing Germany from the air wasn't going to stop them. Lots of slave labor...

@TheRealHawkeye Japan DID try to attack the USSR in 1939, but got easily defeated in the Battle of Khalkhin Gol. This is when they realized it was pointless attacking an enemy and march through the Siberian wasteland to get oil in the Kaukasus, which was practically the other side of the world. Great Britain, who at the time still had a great presence in India and many other far East countries was a more logical enemy. I suggest you listen to Hitler's recorded dialogue with Mannerheim in 1942

It's possible. But it's likely a combination of the fact that, no matter who you are, aerodynamics are aerodynamics, so many countries wound up heading in the same direction, and if anybody had a better approach to a given, both enemies and allies would try to copy it.

There is no question that the 1944-45 incarnations of the FW-190 (stictly Dora) & Mustang were two of the frighteningly best fighters in the air at the time but the best of all was the Hawker Tempest V. Spitfire XIV, piffbibble.

@pramboy09 Yes, declaring war and dropping a few leaflets was very helpful. In May of 1939 at a meeting in Paris the British and French secretly agreed not to provide any material assistance to Poland in the case of invasion. This violated treaties both nations already had with Poland. Also, the USSR also invaded Poland and Britain didn't declare war on them. New Zealand, BTW, was a Dominion of the British Empire in 1939. It did now become a Commonwealth realm until after the war. Not comparable

@TheRealHawkeye >>indeed crucial for winning the war.Without the lend lease(which was a damn good deal for you, since Great Britain paid it all back with interest over 60 years) Britain would have been bankrupt (and they almost were anyway in 1945).Trucks, uniforms, medicine, telegraph wire, locomotives were indeed vital on the Eastern Front too. The thing is those weren't given for free. First the USSR had to pay in pure gold for those, and later with millions of human lives.Good deal for you

@pramboy09 True of the PAF. The Army had modern equipment, especially tanks, which were better than the Germans' and organized similarly. Germany invaded with 60 div, 2,750 tanks and 2,315 planes. Slovakia: 3 div. USSR: 33 div, 4,736 tanks and 3,300 planes. Poland had 39 div 880 tanks and 400 planes. Her main problem was a strategy predicated on fighting Germ. alone, in 1942, not a two front war in 1939. PAF were ~5% of active pilots in the BoB and accounted for 13% of German losses.

>and what really didn't help was polands commanders belief in the illusion that cavalry chargers could repel tanks and armoured vehicles! That is entirely fictional. The result of German propaganda, later perpetuated by the Soviets. Polish Cavalry were modern mounted infantry armed with the most modern anti-tank weapons in the world, the Bofors 37mm AT gun and the Wz. 35 AT rifle. They performed extremely well against German armor.

If I understood it correctly, you are absolutely right. There has been too many german generations totally passive about telling what actually happened. Gunther Rall and Erich Hartmann, for instance, had very little to do with the Nazi party. This much I know. They only did their assigned jobs very well. Patriotism is more than stupid, but still, you do not have to be ashamed about everything.

Fw 190 A is a most beautiful fighter of WW2 for me! I don't understant anything from the video, but I read that Russians tested the 190 a lot, and they thought it's no good. It was maybe because they captured mainly old planes, and also german industry was very low on quality in late WW2, due to allied bombing.

I don't think so sunshine. Firstly, it was the British that developed rocket and jet propulsion technology in the 1910s and 1920s making the standout contribution. As someone who studies war studies and has an advanced knowledge of seond world war aviation, I can tell you in no uncertain terms, that the fighters you mention were not quite at the standard of either the Bf 109G or K, and certainly not the Fw 190D.

USA bombing offensive increased and started to be a big issue for Germany in late 1943, it was when Germany already lost the war in east. @pramboy09 That cavalry/tank story was German propaganda. Polish Cavalry were modern mounted infantry, and well armed with tanks and Bofors 37mm AT guns. They performed very well using modern tactics. There were a few charges, but not against tanks. There was one successful charge where Nazi tanks later arrived for photos. Italian newspapers reported this as a cavalry charge on tanks. Guderian also told this lie. Google "Krojanty." Soviet cavalry also performed very well in WWII.

1) The AVERAGE quality of the german pilots also wasn't VERY HIGH because they suffered sufficient losses even in 1941 fighting against low speed russian crafts. 2) I guess soviet AF had enough number of skilled pilots as they quickly gained air supremacy in 1943 during Kursk battle.

@Mercmad Your "common knowledge" is wrong. As Roosevelt literally said, it was like lending your neighbor a hose. The boom in the US was due to exactly this. We fixed a demand shortfall with massive spending. Europe's problem was devastation, preventing them from growing out of their war debt. The US had much larger debt, but easily grew out of it, partially by supplying all the goods Europe could no longer make. Marshall Plan helped underwrite that demand.

May be u didn't know but germans didn't have enough crafts to cover all the front line. It was their tactics to concentrate their crafts to create local superiority at the most important point for them. On Kursk they concentrated all their best air powers but were defeated (in air - first and in a little while on the ground). And since that moment germans never again gained any local air superiority on eastern front. I'm telling this based on air fighters and bombers memoirs.

@flexyco, News flash. One small example of why the Russian fighters got knocked down so regularly: They had no proper gunsights. Without them. It was virtually impossible to score hits on an opponent. True, the Russian pilots weren't battle-seasoned vets, like the Germans. The simple fact is, though. The Russian planes were also crap.
