35:20 We made it boys. I've actually been thinking about this idea quite a lot. I've been having a real tough time getting the results I intend and then being down. Some things are dragged out without success, some actions outright fail. That has put me in a negative mindset, where I blame myself for not getting the results. Since then, I have realized that getting results isn't so much as controlling all the variables and expecting an outcome. Some things are just beyond our reach and if you try hard to pull everything together for yourself, when you do end up failing, you will blame yourself even harder. This lesson of karma helped me realize, that its okay to let go of that burden on yourself, that life pulls whatever strings it wants, not the ones you want to pull. Instead, I will focus on doing my best every time and success is sure to come someday. Thank you for your lessons, Dr. K. I hope we will have a conversation someday.

@@santisinferno There is nothing wrong with being goal orientated. Its good, in fact, to have a direction and furthermore, its even good to want success with it. The problem begins when you get negative results trying to acomplish them so you start blaming yourself for not being enough and so much more than that. Even if i dont successed at what i do ever, i will be content. That is the only way to be. Look up dharma by the way if this doesnt make sense.

This actually explains a lot of how I feel about free will vs determinism - we only have the tools we have at the time, but once we are aware of that fact we can exercise our free will to work toward better tools. We're a product of circumstance, but with increasing means (age, financial security, different life circumstances), we gain more power to, in turn, influence and set our own influences. It's a bit difficult to explain to people, but I think I'll be referencing this video a lot. Basically I think this is what bridges the gap between "nobody has any agency" and "everyone is perfectly in control of themselves all the time". We have a toolbox, and once we acknowledge that fact, we can pick our own tools. It doesn't need to be just a hammer.

I like the seed analogy. It depends also the environment in where the seed is planted, the type of soil you use, and knowing what type of seed it is. The more you know the more you are able to control based on how much you are willing to put into it. If you care that much about the plant, you can fly to the place where the environment is right.

If there's an afterlife then we can do whatever we want but if there isn't then we have to live with how our decisions impact the world around us, because it is the only world we have. Sure, but either way you are going to die. You will either die and go to nothing or die and go to the after life. Your earthly decisions will impact "nothing" in the same way they impact heaven, which is to say not at all. If you die you aren't living with any decisions you make, because you aren't living.

Looking back, Karma played a pretty significant role in my success in school. I often didn't care about the end result, but rather, what I'm planning for myself in the present. I wasn't smart in any particular way. Although I mastered Calculus in 7th grade, I simply had the right environment, thinking habits, and many other reasons to which I'm not aware of.

I learned karma the hard way in life I thought something was wrong with my entire being,that I shouldn’t exist almost because I failed soo much and got rejected by people Through anime I learned eventually to accept myself and that “whatever happens,happens” To give it my all but let go of the outcome. I realized after watching this that the biggest problem with society and school is that we are kinda told results is the only thing that matters and that failing to achieve results means you are a failure I don’t blame or shame myself for who I am and the good or bad I bring. I am who I am,it is what it is People have their reasons to reject or accept you so don’t take much personally. Plant seeds to become your best version of who you wish to be Embrace who you are no matter what I’m at a point in life where I even accept bad people for who they are because they become who they are ,good or bad through karma that maybe was out of their control

Dr. K, speaks on the topic of Karma in this video - in a more practical sense and how we can approach life through this perspective. He defines Karma as a Principle of cause and effect, quite similar to Newton 3rd law - every action has equal and opposite reaction but applicable to all aspect of Life and not just physical. He particularly mentions Karma as an action of the Here and Now. He gives us an analogical approach as how to approach/apply Karma in Life i.e. by looking at it as an action of Cultivation rather than an action of Creation. As action of Creation would imply we control the Result, but rather Result/goals/consequences is something beyond. Whereas action of cultivation simply puts the results beyond our control yet raising opportunities for our future self to enjoy the fruits of . ( Eg if we sow seeds we are not guaranteed the flower to blossom, but it does give an opportunity for the future self to see the blossomed plant if we do so) Underlying this concept - we also have to understanding that 1.we are only responsible for our Action and we are not responsible for the Results. As Results are things Beyond our control. 2. Everything external is beyond our control 3. The action of Cultivation, should be done so with detachment to the Result - ( for the concept of motivation with detachment Dr. K has some wonderful videos) 4. We must forgive ourselves for the Past, We must cheer ourselves for the future . But the only thing we can do for the present is to Give It our Best - as all the regrets in Life are not about Failures or Success but rather on the Self guilt of not Giving it all. 5. If we approach life as action of creation, i.e. our action is fully responsible for our Result than we will create negative feedback loop on the action whenever we find failure.
@RainSunder
@RainSunder 4 жыл бұрын
So blaming yourself for past action(s) is an action that usually has the effect of not taking action. So if in the present you keep taking the action of blaming yourself for actions in the past you'll be stuck in a loop of inaction. Kinda, I think.

To me, this explanation of Karma feels like you are a free will consciousness living in a deterministic world. And the whole problem is that you don't start when time equals 0, and even if you do, there would still be things that would affect you and that would be out of your control. All you can do is play in the present to make the most of it.

Strikes so hard! I try a new habit, I miss one day, I blame my lack of responsibility and discipline. That's literally seeking the fruit. What you should be asking is "Did I do right today?" Because only that is in my control and eventually when I look back, I find it has become an habit. That's the fruit. If I'm trying to see the fruit right from beginning (like track progress), I'm destined to failure. The result isn't in my control. It becoming a habit or not isnt my control. The me tomorrow may fuck it up. Or past me would have already fucked it up. Will I not fuck it up now is the answer.

This seems to me like desensitisation, not a way of just reducing suffering, but all feelings. It was summed up perfectly when he said you separate yourself not only your failures but your successes. I chose to want and try forge my own destiny. If I am to crash and burn and regret it deeply then so be it, but that seems better than this that is not to try at all. I chase the greatest heights, by doing my best, so that I can feel enjoyment and I pay this price with my suffering I know, but this Karma seems to not just reduce suffering but take away the potential for euphoria. In short it even seems cowardly, I chose to live my life with courage and responsibility to reach those great heights, not that which numbs our emotions.

@flapajack3215
@flapajack3215 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dimitris_Half Yes, I understood the concept, it is just obvious observations that some may use as a coping mechanism to deal with disappointment, worry and regret. The theory may seem sound, but do you not see what it is trying to convince you to do? When you aspire to the greatest heights, you place everything in that one goal. That is how the vast majority of those at the top of their craft are made such as the master artist or Olympic athlete. They manifest their destiny by forcing it to become true, not this “sewing seeds” and thinking that it might happen, that is no mindset. They act with an absolute certainty and make their dreams come true by the belief that they have control, learning to overcome their emotions and setbacks, not hiding in the safety of a mediocre man’s thinking. You must want and forge the outcome; it must be willed. When you separate yourself from worry, disappointment and regret you lose part of what drives you, it is a stifling of the will, a desensitisation, these feelings exist for a reason. When you chose to believe that you can't control your future and you are not responsible for you past, you become a victim. It is a victim of circumstance you are arguing for after all. From a logical standpoint it might seem to make sense but so does existential nihilism, which is absolutely no way to live, and humans are driven by illogical feelings, feelings are what give us reason to be alive so to neglect them good or bad, is wrong. Sometimes you must choose the path that is not logical because it will provide you with greater benefit, which arguably in turn, makes it logical. Dr.K is a psychologist but no philosopher. This Karma can best be described as “self-help”, it bears no actual understanding of metaphysics. This world is the will to power and nothing besides. In short, my truth is not necessarily your truth. If this is something that works for you then I will not argue that it is wrong for you to practice it. But to those that aspire to great heights it is likely very harmful. It turns the hungry desperate person’s mindset that is necessary for success into someone who is content with life, and being content with life will inevitably create inaction and so success is less likely to be achieved. To summarise, the you who believes he can control his future and is responsible for his past will likely be capable of achieving much more than the you who follows Karma, although you might suffer less. Maybe when I’m 50 and have nothing more to give Karma may seem more enticing, but while I still have a shot at something big I think I’ll keep my distance for now.

till 27:00 but that way of thinking can get you into making excuses for not doing something. I think in every moment you are free to choose, and not so dependant on past. Options which u have are limited, due to past and all various factors, but still if we are talking about skipping and not skipping a class, so many options there... You either dont go or you go or you come late :D, thats simple. You always have a freedom to choose, but the options given are determined by "karma", past accumulation lets say it that way, but the option to going to class is not taken, unless ilness or someother strong reason, but not fear if you don't go because of fear, thats not a good reason and there should'nt be such things like oh I am a byproduct of my past and I cant go to class due to anxiety of failing a test

What actually surprised me the most is that 16 year old me pretty much just completely figured karma out on his own. I used to phrase it in this way that the person i look up to is my future self and that my current self works towards becoming the great future self i envision. Fuck man. It's all making sense! IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER! Daily task are so hard to me because I want to set up a healthy life for myself but when I don't, I feel like a screw up. So fuck that shit. Today I want to brush my teeth to get off the food and bacteria. Today I want to wash my face because I feel cleaner and refreshed when I do. Today I want to eat good because I need the nutrients. Today I'm alive, and I'm going to live.

Frstly, great thanks for the content, doc! Actually a worthwhile info with examples and practical execution, you're a jewel in this junkyard. Now, about my question. And what if I've been working my donkey off as I was told and as I believed in God, but I always got some worthless trash as rewards for my labor? As you said, I've bought the seeds for mango trees, dug the holes, grew and watered them by the timetable, everything was according to instructions without a notch, but no trees grew in a year. Also, I shared my instructions with others. And others had grown those, some were bad, some were good, but they weren't as diligent as me. And, as a final accord, all this time I wanted to prepare some homemade mango syrup (let's presume you can't buy mangos or syrup, only make it yourself), so I didn't even get to preparation phase. I feel greatly tricked and used, as a total loser, who did everything as it was to be done and some lazy lad just somehow got it thanks to my advice! And it was not once or twice! I don't want to work hard and just sow seeds when life is that unfair so there are idiots who win by accident after 1st seed. I just feel stupid and low-status to try anymore.

What most people assume about how karma works is the following: someone who does something "bad" will be equally and necessarily get punished at some point by a "divine force of balance" which has to do justice either directly or indirectly. This does not happen by something magic people...generally speaking you can see it happening in between humans when someone does something bad the other sides goes out of their way to fuck them for it, so, only when an observer exists who is capable or creating a punishment and assuming they care about acting on it is when karma works, and the same is in effect for good deeds. It's purely just a concept that works only under some circumstances and some times it doesn't entirely.

you're as wrong about karma as the ones you criticise are. Karma is not "a mechanism that dishes out justice." Karma is simply what you do. It means "action" or "deed" in Sanskrit, from where it entered English. Besides, in schools of thought that claim Karma has consequences that must be borne, the consequence need not manifest in the present life of the doer. Whether Karma "works always" is impossible to prove or disprove objectively, unless we settle the debate on whether reincarnation is real, which is also impossible to prove or disprove.

All patterns arise in an infinite chaos. The human mind is a pattern matching machine, it's often inaccurate, but it's fast. Arbitrary zeros, boundary conditions, capricious taxonomies, and observer bias all inform and misinform understanding. The 2 nd law of thermodynamics says that the physical universe is tending towards disorder.

The belief that "you randomly was born from your parents" have nothing to do with being a Secularist or atheist Theism is someone that believe in god/s Atheists is someone that don't believe in god/s. Secularist is someone who believes that religion should not be involved with the ordinary social and political activities of a country. Some atheists/secularist believe in true randomness Some atheists/secularist believe that randomness can be calculated and predicted if we have enough information. Like the weight, velocity of a coin can be used to predict the result of a coin toss, but that we can't know anything for certain, since we can't know the position, velocity and acceleration of every atom, particle, quark and every other variable in the universe which changes all the time. Some atheists/secularist believe that everything is just a meaningless chain reaction, which may includes what we call "us", "self" or "consciousness". Some atheists/secularist believe that the mutations in the DNA are truly random, some believe that we can't conclude that, because we just don't know enough, it's just unpredictable enough for us to call it random Some atheists/secularist are buddhists or nihilists, some are not Simply saying that atheists believe in randomness is kind of silly. Not sure why I cared so much. Going to slide into bed now, the time is 01:56 :(

This explanation of Karma sounds a lot like Determinism, which has been my view of the universe for some time. On top of helping me with my mental issues, Dr. K has made me very interested in eastern philosophy and Buddhism. If anyone knows a good book that encompasses an overview of these topics, please let me know.

I think the biggest difference between Karma and Determinism is that Determinism doesn't allow for any level of free will. Karma says you control your actions in the present and the past and future aren't under your control, where Determinism says that the person I am today is the result of the past and therefore any decision I make today is not truly a free decision.

Okay so what I got from is: You are not destined but your choices are destined to have consequences. Your past is not changeable and your future is destined by your present actions and choices. By cultivating good actions you pave the way for beneficial habits which are a effect of your past actions as well as the cause for future events. Our 'Destiny' is woven between our actions and the causes of the actions of the people around us. Did I get the core of the topic or did I misunderstood something?

@@thebigstick5540 the reason he wants it on the blockchain is because every single participant in a blockchain holds every piece of data of the blockchain. Its just a huge ledger and everyone adds to their ledger and talks to eachother to confirm everyones copys are correct. So if he put this video on a blockchain, like lets say the Ethereum blockchain, the video would be on the blockchain forever, since everyone holds a complete copy of the ledger. So hes saying he should upload it to the blockchain so it can never be lost or deleted because he thinks its valuable for everyone to see.

The question that Dr K's explanation of karma made think is - if actions are both a cause and effect, wouldn't my ability to sow the seeds also be dependent on the past circumstances (which are outside of my control if we purely focus on the present moment)? Wouldn't that mean that everything is outside of my control? i.e. I could saw a seed by going to the library to study, but due to anxiety (that stems from past trauma) going to the library is very difficult for me (or let's say even near impossible). Hence my ability to go to the library (a.k.a. to plant the seed) is affected by past circumstances. Wouldn't that mean that my ability to plant seeds/send positive karma is at best limited?
@mk11211

And just to tag onto that last paragraph, you also have the choice to expand your knowledge - there are things you could do, choices that you have, that you are entirely oblivious to right now as a result of being who you are. If you choose to expand your knowledge, you can make those choices visible to yourself, and open up new paths of causality that otherwise had 0 probability. Meeting new people, reading new books, trying new things are all great ways of doing this, and they allow you to broaden your scope of possible directions to go in, possible decisions to make. You don't HAVE to do this, but if you feel like you've been shoehorned into an avenue of very limited options and you're unhappy with them, maybe it's a good idea to take a break to do some lateral growth instead of pushing forward.
