About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on KZbin videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

To keep from having sore hands pulling on a rope to move the chicken tractor, you may want to put a small piece of garden hose around the rope or a piece of conduit.

I've always enjoyed John's design for pastured poultry and like your modifications for a laying flock. If we do a pastured flock of layers again I'll do this design. My old ones always ended up quite heavy to move.

I like your modifications. I hate chicken wire though because I believe it is only made to keep chickens in. Most predators can rip right through it. We are in Alaska and we use mink pen wire, designed for mink cages. We have a fixed coop and we bury it into the ground angled away from the coop and covered with firmly packed small rocks. They free range during the day and we use cardboard under their perches that is changed weekly and composted. More work. But safer for our layers. We also use a rooster to protect them while they free range..we have eagles and Hawks who go after them and it is so great to hear him send the alert and send the girls running into the brush for cover, He is excellent at his job.

Hi, Jason. The basic plans may have been someone else's, but you sure made a significant number of modifications that improved the overall design -- especially the rounded skids so that it would not "dig in" during relocation! The detachable carabiner clips was another good idea, not to mention the Perch and nesting boxes. Nicely done! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 4/25/2019.

#1 Chicken wire is often inadequate for preditor protection. Yours looked heavier duty than what I am familiar with and I'm hoping it will be sufficient. # Chickens like to roost on whatever is highest. If the nesting boxes are higher than the roosts...you are going to have them roosting there and all the poop that goes with it. :( I really like this egg mobile!

I have been using a non-toxic water sealant called Garden Seal on all my outdoor coops and builds. It’s the same texture as milk, paints on easily, smells like Elmer’s glue, and works very well. I’m pretty confident it’s safe next to my birds and vegetables like it claims. Should add a couple of seasons to my builds as well. Keeps water from penetrating your wood and keeps it looking new, showing that it works. Would highly recommend if you want to add a little more durability to your outdoor builds.

I know I'm 3 years too late but, when making your notch in a 2x4, use a screw driver or piece of steel, the thickness of your saw blade, and put it in a cut and pull it sideways. It should pop that section (a little wafer) out, and you won't need to use the wood chisel and hammer. Try it.

I think this is the best video I've ever seen. Very straightforward. Watching you work with wood makes me want to be a carpenter. We made a 12*12 A frame tractor for egg layers two years ago without doing too much planning. It's worked well but it's heavy. No plastic. I think I go overboard on space since I can't let them free range. I use chicken wire and have had chickens for ten years. I've never had a problem. Maybe it would be a problem if they didn't have a roost or a covered area at night, or if their roost was too close to the ground and not covered/protected. Anyway, we're planning our next build and expanding our flock. My husband wants to build pvc tractors so they're not too heavy but I want wood. I was able to move the wood tractor last year. I like the simplicity of this design and improvements that you made. I was wondering if I should make a very simple, larger like maybe 8*10*4? Partially covered Pvc/chicken wire run they could have access to during the day. Is that overkill? Am I over thinking? Happy hens lay more eggs! I also like the idea from one of the commenters about the non toxic clear coat for protection of the wood. We used flex seal and caulk last time and it was expensive and didn't wear as well as we had hoped. Again, great video❤️
