How I design labels for the Munbyn Thermal Printer - Using paid and FREE software

Since being sent the Munbyn Thermal Printer to test, I have used it almost everyday in the shop and still love it as much as the day I tested it. Although many use this printer for shipping labels, it does so much more!!! Today I am going to show how easy it is to design labels for your printer using both paid and free software.
The printer works with MAC, Windows and ChromeOS. If you are using Google Chrome, you don't need to install the printer driver, just add the extension - Munbyn Printer Extension, you can print directly from Google Chrome. Here is the link to the extension: chrome.google.com/webstore/de...

Not sure if you have found out since this video is about a year old, but, you dont need to manually feed the labels to the front, the printer grabs it and pulls it to the front and like that, you dont "waste" those two labels. In short, you put the first label in the back of the printer, the printer pulls it, and voila! all done with no extra labels in the front :)

This is a thermal printer so you need special thermal paper. It won't print on regular paper or vinyl.

What did you find were the best settings to get the deep black on the coloured labels? I've tried the highest resolution 300dpi and the highest density 15 and clicked the deeper option, but still find it kind of dull, more grey then black

Yes, thermal printing will fade over time - think of receipts you get from shops. These are usually thermal printed. Heat also affects them, so they may not make the best labels for candles.

Not all thermal printers are limited to single color printing. It depends on the paper being used and the print technology. For example, Zero Ink printers (aka ZINC) have full color printing capabilities. The print head for that type of thermal printing paper works differently that this simpler type of thermal printer. ZINC papers will change color if exposed to the right amount of heat and duration to trigger one or more of the three color sub-layers. One color per layer within the paper itself. Thermal printers tend to have the lowest print quality as well. Anywhere from 300x300 DPI at the high end or lower. These are all essentially draft modes for receipt printers.

It is still important to note that a thermal printer does not print colour. It works off of heat as I explain in video. It is true that you can get colour if you have the right paper but at the time of making this video, munbyn did not have it so i wasn't about to go into the science of it and confuse people when its a sponsored video. They do have limited ones now. Thermal Printers can be useful for many short term projects like shipping labels and of course as receipt printers which I have. I do not recommend them for items that need long lasting labels or come into contact with heat.

Printing quality is great though I wouldn't use this for printing personalised labels. You can only print in black and labels are for short term not long term use. They will fade and most personalised items need to last a long time

@nobodynothing2594 that's a how long is a piece of string question. The labels will last long enough for shipping but they are affected by things like heat and UV light. This will affect their life. I have some labels that have lasted for years which are on things in dark places and others only a few months when they've been in direct sunlight

You need to make sure you're creating your artwork to the size you actually want to print

The only situation I have where the labels come into contact with water is when I use them as shipping labels. I have not had any short term effects when it rains. I don't use them as labels for products that come into contact with water so I don't know how long they will last in that situation.

I have a munbyn printer as well, but mine will not calibrate no matter what I do. It's so frustrating! It'll just keep feeding labels through or when it does print it prints a tiny bit and not the entire label.

The only time I've had problems with it feeding labels is when I had the measurements out by 1mm. If everything is set perfectly, it may be worth contact Munbyn in case of a fault

That was not the case 😂 A coworker gave me another idea to try to reset the printer, so I'm hoping that works. The method I found online did not help either. Usually, if labels don't align, it means there is a user error. Either it has not been loaded straight or the measurements are off. I try reloading the paper and I check both my artboard is the right and the paper is the right size.

That won't really solve it. The wires need to go under something so they don't rock. It's a design flaw

Probably best to message munbyn about that. I've not had problems with the amount of printing I do but I'm don't need it running 24 hours a day

Not all thermal printers have the issues you describe, if you get one that uses a ribbon the label is unaffected by heat.

The issues I mention were all concerns others have brought up by those using a direct thermal printer which are more common than thermal transfer printers. The advantage though is you don't have to replace ribbons

The printer is thermal meaning it burns the image into the paper. Grayscale is not colour. It will do varying shades of black including grey by changing the degree of heat.

I am actually feeding it through the back per the instructions that come with the machine. The wasted stickers was annoying me and I have since found a video put out by Munbyn showing an alternative way to load the stickers. I will show in a future video 😁

I am really struggling with the round labels and not being centred. I have adjusted offset and wasted over 100 stickers. Munbyn are not helpful at all!

I've not had any issue with alignment on round labels. Make sure when loading the labels they are loading correctly. If it looks like it's uneven, reload them. Also, make sure the guides are tight against the labels so they feed straight.

For a number of reasons. As I explained in the video, the screen recorder I had at the time didn't record the actions in the program I use for designing, so it would have been difficult to see the screen. The steps are standard to printing anything from software in that you select print, the paper size and print. This is the third video in this series. And the first couple do show that process.
