I just listened to David Oistrakh's 1972 recording with the Berlin Philharmonic that prompted me to listen to SoYoung Yoon's 2011's competition of the same concerto. This time, I deliberately not to look at her, just listen to her. Oistrakh was 64 in 1972, Ms Yoon was 27 in 2011. Oistrakh's playing could be mellower, a studio recording; Ms Yoon's was live in a competition. I enjoy both the same. If I watch her play, she has the edge. In 2015, she played Beethoven in the same venue, then in 2019, she played Mendelssohn in Seoul. It is hard to believe 8 years have gone by, from a young woman to a mature woman. Her fire was still there with added maturity. She is a wonderful gift to lovers of violin music. Oh, she plays a Guadagnini and Oistrakh played a Stradivarius.

Yes, this music, "Hath charms which soothe the savage breast" (Quoth the Bard of Avon, anyway), but this music is the celestial, elemental, "Music of the Spheres" --- a Divinely inspired miracle bequeathed to us through God's own instrument, That minor Angel who was Mozart. It also often greases the wheels of commerce by enabling us to concentrate when work is literally driving us INSANE! (No Joke!, I'm half-Laughing, Half-Crying-out-Loud, this is SO TRUE!!!) The E string is the highest string on a violin. I assume he is talking about the 2 whistling sounds around the 2:05 mark. This can be caused by several things: not enough weight being put on the bow (especially when slurring over from the lower string), the left hand slightly touching the string someplace it shouldn't, or just an old or bad string (probably not likely here). My guess is she was trying to play too lightly near the fingerboard for a softer sound and paid the price.

The first of Mozart's five Violin Concerti I heard was this K 216, His 3rd., in G Minor, when I was a freshman in High School. This First movement here is a virtually definitive performance -- it's a force of nature in and of itself,, it's so magnificent. But the 2nd. Mvt., not played here, sends shivers up my spine every time I hear it, it's so incredibly beautiful. There's an Isaac Stern recording of it from the late 50's that's SINE QUA NON. As to the K. 363 E flat Sinfonia Concertante, IMO, perhaps the greatest recording of this ever made is the DGG Recording with Itzhak Perlman & Pincas Zuckerman (Viola), where every nuance of each of the soloists is perfectly balanced against the Orchestra.
