SP 4449 to Railfair '91

Everybody's complaining about the diesels, meanwhile I'm just happy to see her on home rails with Espee power assisting her... What I wouldn't give to see 4449 today lashed up with a couple of SP geeps on the mainline, instead of with a P42 on some branch line in downtown Portland.

So for those wondering, the daylights always had helpers whether steam or diesel to get over grades. Get over yourselves

If they really had to have those diesels, why not put them behind the steam locomotive? (or better still, attach them to another train!)

It was probably easier for the crew to manage braking with the diesels up front so their view would be unobstructed.

Why were the diesels attached. That ruined it.

They were assisting 4449. it may have been do to a failure.

The diesels were added as helpers for steep grades - extra power going uphill and for dynamic braking going downhill.
