In regular service, they were a pain to keep clean and constantly required repainting. Finally, SP just said "screw it" and painted the tires of the wheels solid black - a much easier solution.

@@gabrielarambula4465 I’d highly doubt it. Whitewall locomotive wheels are just for “show” and are not specifically meant for everyday service. In a matter of weeks the paint would start rubbing off and fading as the wheels are the most dirtiest part of a locomotive when it comes to day to day operations, since they always run over varying track conditions, the wheels can get dirt and grease caked up on them and that’s what eats away at white paint.
