I'd seen the EX version for sale at LnM back in the day, my first time seeing it. I went on KZbin and seen Madnez tutorials on it but then Roland drops the MV 8800 so that became my focus. Every now and then I come back to thinking about this unit.

The best part about the Sp-808 was the resampling. Since it only could play 4 stereo samples at once.. you could easily resample them down to one pad. Same workflow still used on the Sp-404.

SP-808 was my first major piece of gear. Made whole mixtapes on it. Dude on youtube(Midimaniac) put the Akai 2000xl MCD drive in the Sp-808 and it works and it gives the machine a whole new life. The MCD seems to be the only drive that will replace the zip and actually work.

This was my first sampler and it's still one of the most satisfying instruments I've ever used! The D-Beam is everything. I don't make dance music, so I don't give a shit about keeping a beat. I used it as a weird loop/sfx machine and whipped my head over the D-Beam while twiddling knobs elsewhere. Those were some fun, fun times. If the SP-808 had used a storage medium other than zip disks, or if someone could finally figure out how to modify it to accept SD cards, I would be the absolute best sampler in existence. The FX sound great, the D-Beam is fun, and with enough storage, the 4-track recorder/sequencer would actually be useful.

Back in the days i made a full track on the sp-808ex with this loop technique you did describe. It was a bit a pain. But yeah, if you get used to it and you had no other tool, it magically worked out. For many years i used just the effects on the device. I still miss it for that. I tried to get one in the last couple of years, but the prices for a sp-808 in good condition are just out of this world.

@@fantasyproduct1042 Yeah dood. Unfortunately the only compatible drive heads in the know have found is CF card reader found in the MPC2000XL MCD edition. Make sure it's the original drive because you might get one with a swapped out drive which is what i had to do (swap out the drive). Lol. Probably not worth the hassle to most. Technically this is better than the MPC from functions the MPC is just a sampler that's it this thing let you have a synthesizer which meant you can create sounds from scratch and then use the buttons trigger them or use a keyboard and even some limited recording capabilities that surpassed the mPC stand-alone unit at the time

@@DyReckProductions I'm old enough to remember making beats with just turntables and the 3 loop sampler on my Vestax mixer. You can definitely make beats with just the SP808. I always loved mine … the original model, upgraded with the EX o.s. that I copied off a unit in a music store. Used it for industrial music, mainly, and it was great for that. It’s been stashed away for years, but I still have it. If anybody’s figured out how to replace the Zip drive with a card reader, I’d love to know about it. There’s been other drive-based gear from that era, like E-mu and/or Akai samplers I think it was, where that’s possible, but for the SP-808 it seems like all you can find evidence of is failed experiments.

I liked the SP808 as it was great to augment compositions with. Beat loops arranged on 1, a full live guitar track on 2, One shots on 3, and have it drive a 16trk sequencer on a adjacent workstation all in one swoop! The drag of the 808 was the 4th track was kinda useless if overloaded, causing track snips to drop out. Not bad for intro/outro stuff, but that's about it. Plus the converting to WAV to do intense editing on a PC was a pain. Nifty little software app that was easy to use. But had to get another Zip drive and hook it to the PC/laptop. and the whole SCSI thing was a pain. But the other godsend was the back expansion board offering a LOT more connectivity. And that the SP-808 could be 'hacked' to become the SP-808EX - offering more sample time with 250MB Zips over the standard 100MB. Just WAAAAY Better than Rolands farty DJ-70 is all I can say! LOL
