This was my first sampler and it's still one of the most satisfying instruments I've ever used! The D-Beam is everything. I don't make dance music, so I don't give a shit about keeping a beat. I used it as a weird loop/sfx machine and whipped my head over the D-Beam while twiddling knobs elsewhere. Those were some fun, fun times. If the SP-808 had used a storage medium other than zip disks, or if someone could finally figure out how to modify it to accept SD cards, I would be the absolute best sampler in existence. The FX sound great, the D-Beam is fun, and with enough storage, the 4-track recorder/sequencer would actually be useful.

The Roland disclab CDX-1 is almost like an sp 808 sans the VA synthesizer, less pads and no knobs to control the real time effects. It has 8 tracks instead of 4 for the multitrack recording and instead of the zip drive there is a CD drive. If i were to choose between the two I would go with the SP 808, but am still happy with the disclab at the moment 😊
@DyReckProductions3 жыл бұрын
Nice wish the 808 had a Cd drive or a regular hard drive. That would have probably put it on top at the time.

I got mine new back in 98. Never used it to tap out beats. I would use it for loops and then time stretch different loops to match BPM. Zip disks weren't fast but man that sample time was on point.
@DyReckProductions3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it did have alot of sample time..And some of the older gear back then just gave you a couple seconds of sample time.

This reminds me of the zoom AR48. Cheap, recently discontinued, but insanely powerful, 12 sounds and 12 voices (not linked together), Synth, PCM and sampling, 4 bars. It was ignored because it was cheap and looked like a rainbow tamborine. that thing is poooowerful.

I still have an SP 808EX. Found a compatible CF card and that upgrade is a game changer. SP1200 and a SP 808 is crazy unknown dope combo.
@DyReckProductions3 жыл бұрын
Oh ok nice.
@customerservice96023 жыл бұрын
⬆️Heads don't know that with that CF card upgrade the SP808 is better than the newer SP sample boxes, imo. And the disk busy error is gone because SD card is way faster than that zip drive. So you can use it to actually make beats. Still would have been dope with on board sample memory obviously. Loops are what it's best at though. 👍🏼
@DyReckProductions3 жыл бұрын
@@customerservice9602 Oh ok cool if the upgrade makes it so that the drive works 10x's faster thats awesome!!..I got to put my boy on he was thinking about putting a new drive years ago but never did.

@@DyReckProductions the bad news is that the only one the community found that works is the CF Drive that comes stock with MPC 2000XL MCD version. So I had to buy a 2nd hand one of those and swap out the CF drive for another one then sell it, lol.

I always loved mine … the original model, upgraded with the EX o.s. that I copied off a unit in a music store. Used it for industrial music, mainly, and it was great for that. It’s been stashed away for years, but I still have it. If anybody’s figured out how to replace the Zip drive with a card reader, I’d love to know about it. There’s been other drive-based gear from that era, like E-mu and/or Akai samplers I think it was, where that’s possible, but for the SP-808 it seems like all you can find evidence of is failed experiments.
@DyReckProductions3 жыл бұрын
Some guys on here was talking about being successful with the Zip Drive replacement and installment..They said they brought a old 2000 from ebay for the parts and switched out the hard drives.

I liked the SP808 as it was great to augment compositions with. Beat loops arranged on 1, a full live guitar track on 2, One shots on 3, and have it drive a 16trk sequencer on a adjacent workstation all in one swoop! The drag of the 808 was the 4th track was kinda useless if overloaded, causing track snips to drop out. Not bad for intro/outro stuff, but that's about it. Plus the converting to WAV to do intense editing on a PC was a pain. Nifty little software app that was easy to use. But had to get another Zip drive and hook it to the PC/laptop. and the whole SCSI thing was a pain. But the other godsend was the back expansion board offering a LOT more connectivity. And that the SP-808 could be 'hacked' to become the SP-808EX - offering more sample time with 250MB Zips over the standard 100MB. Just WAAAAY Better than Rolands farty DJ-70 is all I can say! LOL
