🚨🚨🚨 I MESSED UP! PLEASE READ: at 2:43 and later on in the video I say that there are no ways to play polyphonically or legato in chromatic mode. THAT IS NOT TRUE!!! as @hahaihaveahandlenow points out, pressing "REMAIN" will open up both modes. this is awesome to realise, but obviously makes this video a bit flawed. thank you @hahaihaveahandlenow for setting the record straight! I apologise. I promised I did read the manual (twice lol) but must've skipped or forgotten about this part. hopefully the rest of the techniques shown in ths video will still inspire you and make it enjoyable! oh and btw... this changes the vote of course... from a 4 to a 7! my bad @roland! thank you and again, sorry about the slipup...

Pressing "Remain" in Chromatic mode allows you to play polyphonically and legato

I opened comment section just to write the same thing 😂 I found it pretty recently by pressing accidentally „remain” while being in chromatic mode. Wish you all the best guys ❤

6:00 There is a workaround to record external sources to playback. You can't record onto a beat while using pattern mode, because you have to record to a pad. So here's the work around: 1. Copy your pattern from pattern mode to a pad like this: Open pattern mode, press copy, choose pattern, press "Pattern Select" button on the top left, then choose a pad where you want the pattern to be copied to. 2. Now you have your pattern on a pad. Press "Loop" for playing back your pattern as a loop. 3. Press Shift + "Ext Source", change Routing from "Mix" to "ExtIn". Now you are able to record your guitar on the loop, but it will only record your external source. 4. Recording Guitar: Press Resample, start your playback loop which you have had copied to a pad. Play the guitar. Et voila: You will get a recording only from your guitar. 5. Now you are able to trim the recording to your desired starting point and can put things together in pattern mode again.

man, it sounds laborious aha! but pretty much everything is on the 404. I'll check it out!

use "skipback" to record externals whilst playing a pattern. - will capture your playing, then you can trim it and put it on a pad. just turn the mix to external so it only picks up your guitar/bass/vocal

You can record live by changing the Input Setting to ExtIn and using resample to record your guitar onto a pad. Typically I bounce the drums to a pad first so I have something to play to. Then you just need to line it up or chop it for your beat.

Or press resample while in pattern select then you can record to a pattern or pattern chain ;)

8:50 If you want to copy just the drums from a pattern you have to do this: Press Copy, Choose Pattern, Press "Remain", select samples (in this case: Kick, Hat, Snare), press "Remain" again. Et voila: You only have copied the samples you want to have :) As mentioned in the other comment: You can press "Pattern" Select to copy you pattern to a pad. So you don't have to mute stuff and resample it.

oh yes, I knew this one, I discussed it in a video when v3.00 came out, but, weirdly enough I still find it quicker to mute the rest of the pads I'm not using!

Hello …I have been watching a lot of your videos on youtube and wanted to ask you a question. I think I would have watched more then 40 hours of your videos on Sp404, volca sample 2 ect in the last week :) So here is my question - I am a guitarist and trying to compose lofi jazz / post rock type of songs, mostly instrumental. Currently, I have been doing it on logic, where I get hip hop drum samples and FX from splice and then lay jazz chords on top of it and then solo on top of it. I have recently got the 404MK2 so that I can start doing things without the computer open. SP404 is great but for drums I was wondering if I should get a budget step sequencer for drums - Like T8 or Volca sample2 or volca drum. I actually ordered both the T8 and volca sample 2 and returned both of them. The T8 was super easy to program but the sounds were mostly good for acid/house and not that much for the type of lofi jazz or post rock that I wanted to create. The sample 2 was better but I returned it because it can pretty much do what the SP404 does but it’s is easy to see the steps and program it in sample2 than the pads view on SP404. Do you suggest I try to do everything with the SP404 only? Or should I add back the sample2 to any other drum machine for my workflow. My sounds is a Little Rock inspired but I won’t make classic rock beats. I might do a indie / post rock / jazz / bossanova beats. Please let me know as I will really value your expertise and opinion.

Big up man! Love your videos! But will it GARAGE? :) I’m trying to make UKG, because you can shuffle and make off grid notes, so that’s why I’m asking. It is hard, but I’m sure it’s possible at least as an exercise
@BIGUMAMI

UKG is DEFINITELY on my to-do list, just with a different machine... keep your eyes peeled! for now I can tell you that making interesting wobble basses and things of that kind can be a challenge on the 404, but I got a video for you... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZqmd6Zsn994fNk

I think its possible to record to record external while playing a pattern/chain by pressing resample while in pattern select mode :0 hope im right and dont tell bs but also you make it working out great anyways, enjoy ur vids a lot thans mate ;)

Also, creating a blank pad and put it on the first beat you can resample with the method above onto that pad and when u turn gate of, ur recording should be in your pattern ;) also to mention,not my invention but cant remember where i got it from

It's cool to see everyone sharing tips in the comments, but I think it also shows just how much you have to remember to get everything out of this box. I find that really frustrating and might end up selling mine.

Man, this is nothing compared to the lengths we used to have to go to chop up samples in tiny sampler windows back in the day. Embrace the challenge, it's half the fun. :)

@@billB101 It's not about the challenge, man, it's about the workflow, the panel labelling that makes no sense (wtf does "remain" mean anyways?), and the awkward key combos. It's just clunky to use this thing.
