I would say as long as he is doing what he loves his career's just fine. Gotta question what our culture calls "success". I find that the common definition is toxic.

@@NatTardis Most often success is about numbers, or at least in the most common use of it. Numbers in money, in subscribers etc. From a parasocial perspective it's usually easier to measure those things than to measure actual enjoyment or how the person behind the screen is actually feeling. In this case Daniel said "your career's success" which is, of course, about his youtube/twitch career which is mainly about numbers. I think that even though the whole picture can't be seen with only numbers, it's still important that the person can uphold his or hers career without getting financial setbacks. I personally feel that you should do what you want to and have whatever career you strive to have but you need to be able to support yourself from it, both financially and emotionally.

@@questionsayer I think we are fudamentally in agreement. For sure numbers are a part of it but I don't believe success is in essence about numbers. I believe a life can be a success even if the person has no money. I believe a youtuber can be successful even if they don't break 10k subs. Like you, I believe success is about a state of mind - a deep personal satisfaction about where you've gotten to, who you've become compared to where you want to go and who you want to be. Which is ever changing and only makes the matter more difficult. I can't say whether someone is successful or not - it's for them to decide. We all have our own idea of success, and we all draw inspiration from what we're told. The thing is, what we're told is often bullshit - at least in my sense. Success is often equated to being famous, having lots of money, marrying another successful person, making a family, having a big home and 3 cars, having a prestigious job worthy of recognition. It depends from culture to culture but these are the main lines in our capitalist occidental societies. Being able to support yourself financially is of course essential to anyone's idea of success, because it equates to independence and freedom. But how much money is enough can vary wildly from one person to the next. And most importantly, while no money almost always equals dissatisfaction, money does not necessarily equal satisfaction, and sometimes, it can even be the source of dissatisfaction (think job that pays well but is destructive, or friends/family that care too much about money). In other words, the phrase "your career's success has been hurt by the change in direction years ago" is, in my opinion, a presumption - not a fact. Unless Spazie said that himself at some point. Actually, if Spazie is enjoying himself, then it would seem to me his career has always been successful. But only he can decide, of course.
