Important sequence (plus other S1999 fx scenes ) because it inspired or provided a benchmark for George Lucas to create the space dogfights in Star Wars. I read that waaay back in the 70s. I can well believe it. 🙂

@@DaveJOHAZ I heard the same, including that in th background there had been plans for a Hawk base on the moon that was cancelled becasue the UFOs stopped attacking Earth, leaving just a fleet of eight (half of which were scheduled to be scrapped to save money) based on the space station we saw destroyed in the first episode. Looking at the Hawk model it seems like it would need special landing facilities because it doesn't have the landing gear that an Eagle has. I wrote fan fiction based on Space:1999 that does have Hawks on the moon and they used special landing tractors for launching and landing.

The Eagle and Hawk are some of my favorite designs in SF television. There's just so much that's right about them. The Eagle is, more or less, a Sikorsky Skycrane in space. The exterior of the cockpit suggests there are windows at the pilots' feet, which would be useful for a vehicle that hovers precisely. Hawk doesn't need this, and doesn't have it. AFAIK the Eagle's cockpit set doesn't have windows there, but I'm not sure we'd ever see them. There's a lot of common features between the two; just look at them and you can see they were designed by the same people. Gotta wonder why the Hawks didn't launch their missiles, though.

You called it on the Eagle being like a Sikorsky. The Hawk is more like an Apache. I just mentioned in a response, that considering the back story of Space: 1999, that Earth had suffered attacks by extra terrestrials, and thus the development of the Hawk to counter the threat, that a complement of these was not stationed at Moonbase Alpha.😎✌️

This was expained later. The aliens were testing the humans' reaction to the fear stimuli but they didn't want to rob them of hope (because that tends to trigger extreme responses). So, the odds had to be somewhat close to even. FWIW, I don't think that the aliens were actually expecting the Alphans to try to fight.

Pre dating Star Wars this was the best Space Battle I'd ever seen at the time, there's around a 15 minutes sequence of explosions and action. Awesome. Thinking about it the bit where the Alien Space Cruiser shows up actually is pretty similar to the classic Star Wars opening.

A lot of good questions below, some of which I have seen answered elsewhere. The 3 Hawks that were stationed at the Space Station destroyed in Breakaway were destroyed along with it. The Hawks have a great advantage in speed and armament over the Eagles, but are not as maneuverable, and Carter is a fantastic pilot who also qualified on the Hawk, and it's he that gets both the Hawk kills.

And to be honest lets have some real physics... like B5 did... I mean watch the Eagle's fly like planes with no wings but no atmosphere and no thrusters visibly firing any directions (and nothing from the main rear engines)... Come on guys... Might have passed muster in 1970s but not now

Can't understand why they had no Hawks on Moonbase Alpha if they were so good. You would have thought they'd have a few stashed away just in case. Though makes you wonder what they were actually used for. Were they ever at war to justify their creation, that is before the moon broke away?

Moonbase Alpha was a scientific research station. At the time they didn't know about alien life, so it made more sense to keep the cheaper scientific instruments on the Moon for scientists to use, but anything the government might want to use such as weapons or Hawks firmly on the ground where they can have the most control. Plus Hawks take up a lot more space than Eagles and are harder to manufacture, so on a Moonbase where every extra inch can cost thousands of dollars you really want to use the space you have efficiently.

Because Alpha wasn't a military base. It was focused on exploration. I'm sure the Hawks were stationed somewhere else just not on Alpha.

They were built for a war that came to an unexpected end before they were fully developed. Space 1999 was supposed to continue where UFO left off but that idea got scrapped. With no ear..no need for the Hawks

Supposedly Space 1999 is set in the same universe as UFO. Also, just because there is a single official world government, doesn't mean everyone is happy about it. Terrorist and insurgency groups will almost always be a thing. Also, the laser can be used to destroy space debris or rogue spacecraft, like say, I cargo pilot goes postal and decides he's going to ram a space station at full burn, or you have a smuggling ship that refuses to heave-to and submit to boarding.

One theory is that Space: 1999 is the same universe as U.F.O. and that, at some point, the aliens stopped coming. Since SHADO was still kept a secret from even the most highest officials and never revealed to the public it still had enough influence to have some Eagles equipped with lasers and have updated Interceptors, The HAWKS, just in case they returned. There is even a fan film that have HAWKS shooting down UFO drones for practice.

It always bugged me about Space: 1999 that Eagles could somehow manage to outfight a Hawk, which was a craft specially built for fighting. Then there's the size of the Hawk - It was fairly obviously built from the same frame as the Eagle - though there's a reason for the Eagle to be the size that it is. For the Hawk to be so massive it never quite made sense to me. And why didn't Alpha build Hawks? They're apparently a better fighing/defense craft than the Eagle?
