I always did like how they gave the aliens in Babylon 5 a kind of distinct animal motif to their ship designs to distinguish them. The Centari invoke the images of avians. The Mimbari fish. The Narn reptiles. And the Vorlons had a kind of cephaloid vibe. Made it easier to keep track of who was who in a fight and brought a unique flavor to each of them.

The Centauri represented the old European Monarchies just before WWI, decadent and corrupt. Yet it would be a mistake to think that means ineffective, they still commanded formidable military forces and economic power. But ultimately it was forces within their own nations, not without, that tore them down.

The Centauri to me represented a mixture of the British and Romans. If they're meant to represent the old European monarchies from just before WW1, then they'd represent Imperial Germany which was kickass like the Centauri are. The only reason why the Centauri didn't kick the Narns' asses at first was because Emperor Turhan wouldn't let them and opted to try and appease the Narns for the sake of peace.

We were pretty good sharks ourselves once. But somewhere, along the way, we forgot how to bite. The Centauri were one of the oldest and most advanced of the younger races, barring the minbari. But their empire had been in decline for many years and as a people, seem to have lost the will for conquest. Remember at one point they were fighting a war on 12 fronts and were holding their own. Centauri military technology was powerful and effective, but they didn't have the capacity to produce their ships in great enough numbers to sustain a drawn out war against powers like the earth alliance, which seems to be able to pull new warships out of it's a** on a daily basis.

The Centauri were the only race other than humans that could challenge the Minbar, or defeat a Shadow or Vorlon vessel, and this is only after humans helped the Minbar build the White Star Fleet and the Rangers, with Minbari expertise. the Centuari however were asked to sell weapons that could kill Minbari warships, and relucted to do so, leaving it open to the Narn to sell Centauri weapons to the Earth Force, which didn't win the war for us, but brought Minbari dead into the equation, and as powerful as they are, they became squeamish. They ended the war to stop killing humans.

The Vorchans are arguably the backbone of the Centauri war machine. The designers definitely hit a homerun with this one. It's fast, maneuverable, versatile, easy to mass-produce, and packs a disproportionally heavy punch for a ship of its size. The plasma accelerators are just murderous. Earlier variants had survivability problems, but later upgraded variants took care of that problem. A "wolf pack" of Vorchans jumping into a system can ruin anyone's day.

Agreed. The Primus class was more about establishing a presence throughout the regions of Centauri Empire. It was a very powerful ship, especially for its time of introduction. But it was also big and not very mobile. Later when many younger races started getting their hands on powerful weaponary too, mostly through exploring abandoned alien worlds and reverse-engineering, the Primus became easy to ambush and quickly lost its "unbeatable" status. The Centauri had to change their tactics quickly and the result was the Vorchan. The Minbari followed a simalar philosophy with the design of the White Star.

JAnx01 That's why the Vorchan will always be the signature Centauri warship for me. The Primus suffers from the glass cannon syndrome. It has pretty impressive offensive powers but is way under-armored for a ship of its size. After seeing Babylon 5's defense grid and a squad of starfuries destroy a Primus with only minimum casualties and damages to the station, I just couldn't take this ship seriously anymore.

Then again you must also remember that the Minbari were perhaps a thousand years ahead of the Centauri with technology to start with. They were also toying with Vorlon tech. The outcome of a battle between the Centauri and the Minbari would be in favor of the Minbari. Not even the Drakh were a match for a fleet of White Stars.

@@explorer47422 lost tales series. Sheridan was shown the image of a future if a child became Emperor of the Centauri Really I think the EA would be okay if they stayed defensive. After the Civil War Earth Force rebuilt the fleet using Warlocks and Novas which had gravity drives which allowed for artificial gravity. The reason why they went back to the Nova was purely because of the gravity drive. The Omega replaced the Nova cause the ship had they central section which created centrifugal gravity. With the new engine system the fleet didn't need that so they brought back the warship that had 6 beam cannons 18 heavy plasma turrets 36 Fighters 2 fusion missile launchers While yes the Omega could broadside you with fusion missiles (this is all lore information from the Canon books and from the producer himself. Couldn't show the missiles due to budget issues) they still had that huge target

One Drakh destroyer and "support fighters" against a trio of White stars. The Drakh did have a Shadow planet killer in tow when they attacked Earth.They seem to rely on large numbers and surprise to overwhelm equal opponents. Excalibur took out a Drakh Carrier in the last episode of Crusade. Even the good old Omega class destroyer held it's own during the Drakh wars. I think the creators of B5 contradict themselves occasionally.

There was an Omega in the background pounding into and getting pounded by a Primus. My guess was this group of ships was ambushed hence the heavy losses for the EA. In reality? It would be a pyrrhic victory at best for the Centauri. Earth rebuilt her navy twice over after the war woth the Minbari and Civil War incidents, including a lot of newer Warlocks, when they got the Engines for artificial gravity, the Nova. Yes they did bring back the Nova because a ship that size and armed with AG was more than able to handle larger ships with the Warlock acting more as a battlecruiser to the Nova Battleship. Omega fits the Cruiser niche really well and the Rest of the ships fits into the escort role. Overall Earth had a really good naval branch

For all their firepower Centauri warships are actually far more fragile than most as the Centauri put an emphasis of speed and power instead of defence. As a result even a single squadron of Aurora-class starfuries - the basic fighter of the Earth Alliance with only a faction of the power of its top of the line Thunderbolt-class starfuries - can rip a Vorchan-class cruiser apart in a few seconds.

Markhas Thats even if the Vorchans have a fighter escort, I don’t even think the Primus has a dedicated fighters bay, and unless they have a class of carrier or patrol boat that haven’t been seen on screen, all their fighters are deployed from bases and outposts. The Centauri may simply not put stock in fighters like other races, focusing on more captial ships, destroyer based warfare but that must mean the fighters they DO have and DO deploy are the cream of the crop due to their more specialized nature :)

@@brothergrimace3859 It's actually said in the show that Centauri pilots are very good, and that their fighters should be feared, as they would even risk blackout to maneuver into a better position, sometimes even set the computer to do a stunt well knowing they would lose concussions in the process. The precius quote was: "Centauri pilots have been known to perform drastic and stressful maneuvers that will cause them to pass out, passing control over to the autopilot to complete the maneuver and bring the fighter around to a superior tactical position" And the fighter is as good as Earth's too, at least in speed and maneuverability it even surpasses it: "Possessing greater maneuverability and acceleration than comparable craft such as the Earthforce Starfury" They may look silly and have a weird view on military tech and tactics, but there is a reason these guys where an Empire spading multiply systems. Just because a tiger gets old does not mean it dosn'te know how to bit.

This is what happens when a ship has light or no shields at all to absorb the kinetic energy of an impact or even disperse a directed energy attack "atleast a little bit". Battlestar Galactica is also a good example of how hazardous it is to get into a slugfest with other ships. Fighters and Bombers and long range attacks are your only viable options for ship to ship combat. Doesn't matter how pretty your ship design is if it has only it's armor is it's only defense. Star Trek on the other hand is completely the opposite, advanced shields but little to no armor at all. A smart race would develop capital ships and cruisers that are both heavily shielded and altleast moderately armored.... but if I had to choose between one or the other, I'd take the heavy shields... Atleast shields can be regenerated or reinforced on the go but damage to the hull? Gunna have to hope you can jump to a spacedock or your fucked.....

Star Fleet was run by a bunch of idiots. They decided after every war that peace would be forever. So the next generation of ships were designed for exploration, science, and diplomacy. Armor and heavy weapons were tossed out for comfort and to be non threatening to new species. The Galaxy class was the worst example of the pacifist star fleet. A flying cruise ship. Star Fleet relied on technology advantage in their conflicts. Only the Borg made them realize how pathetic their ships were. Which got them to build several new classes of purpose built warships. Such as the Defiant, Soverign, and Steamrunner. Even post Borg science vessels were beefed up, the Intrepid class being the known example. As it was much more a warship than the smaller science class ship, the Equinox.

Until the ship either disengages successfully surrendering the area to the other, surrenders because of low fuel, or gets hit the first time and becomes crippled or destroyed. There might be some drone use. Though it's more like a missile that Carrie's other missiles and can be recalled. As you can always send them to impact the target also. Point defense guns/lasers will be used to counter them. The guns would fire shotgun like shells to increase hit probability. Also only in directions away from their battle line. As the projectiles will keep going until they hit something.

@@sl600rt ok you clearly have no apreciation for the meaning of distance. unguided projectile fired at light minutes distance?! unless ships are the size of small moons, you aint gonna hit. you need a projectile that can track and adjust its course and do it at a better fuel/propulson ratio. Missiles accelerates to targhet, shuts down drive and coasts, cooling down fast so its gonna be more difficult to keep track of while its still tracking the target. Target moves, missile adjusts for less effort and coasts on, mayhaps speeds up again to overmatch the bigger thing. Missile goes terminal stage, probably a one shot laserhead or nuke tipped. that times a hundred. a thousand. thats space war. Do not bring a gun to the emptiest field of battle where you stand out like a tree in antarctica versus guided missiles... Its all gonna be a game of numbers. Number of missiles, type of warhead, are pen aids included? electronic warfare? number of misiles in salvo versus kill potential of anti missile systems...

No, unlike most other B5 races the Centauri ships do not carry fighters, which are the primary offensive arm of most other Space Navies, those large formations are designed to create overlapping fields of fire to protect against fighter assaults sort of like how bomber squadrons in WW2 flew in a formation that allowed each bomber to cover the other with their machine guns

I must warn, some of my connections come from the games, comics, and lore. The Centauri could have been, like the USSR could have been the USA. It's like, the Centauri couldn't keep it together, and went off course with the wars against the Narn. But in the lore, the Centauri, the Pak Mara, and the Techno-mages were dealing with for at least sometime, a race known as the Karishiac. I may be wrong on that name, because I thought it was "Knife Hand." The first ones at Corriana VI show up with a Knife hand vessel, the one that looks Centauri.

I was talking about the "Lost Tales" scene, where we clearly see the EA losing to the Cent. I don't think it was an ambush. There are ships fighting all over the place in this clip. In the bottom left corner, u can see an Omega class EA destroyer fighting a Primus Cent ship. And there are fighters everywhere. EA is just getting its ass beat is all.

@@sid2112 Unfortunately due to technical complications which I can't remember exactly, they would have to be completely redone from scratch. I've seen some people try to recreate them with varying success. Part of the problem though is that the grainier aesthetic is actually part of B5's charm. In the same way that high def makes things look like someone is just holding a camcorder filming reality tv rather than a cinematic production.

Jesús Quiri now that I think about it I don't think I ever saw an episode of Babylon 5 when I was a kid. I've seen just about every version of Star Trek to a certain point except for the show enterprise. I've seen the original Battlestar Galactica specifically evtv movies that they made I never actually saw the show itself. But I don't recall ever seen an episode of Babylon 5.

Also you are unlikely to see the weapons fire as well. Directed Energy Weapons would probably be beyond the visible spectrum of light so as to carry more energy, Railguns would be firing shots imperceptable over galactic distances. Missiles might be seen by engine glow, but it'll be academic anyway, since the chances of engaing at ranges where you can even see the enemy would be low. Also, the first you knew about the enemy firing a "laser" or other weapon using electromagnetic radiation would be when you got hit, since they would be traveling at lightspeed.

It would be the other way around. Tombstone was out in 1993, Giant Robo the Animation was in 1991. So Masamichi Amano made this music first before Bruce Broughton composed Tombstone.

The Primus were carriers for fighters and troops of the Centauri fleet. But they were outdated design by the time Babylon 5 show ran. So after they phased out due to age they build on the success of Vorchan design and built bigger Demios with hangars in the wings for fighters which Vorchans do not have. Incidentally it was Emperor Vir Coto who ordered development of new capital ship for carrier duty. Vorchans were capable of atmospheric flight, had effective weaponry, required low number of crew, were maneuverable and heavily armored, but once armor was breached survivability was low. But three Vorchans had firepower of Primus and for price of one Primus four Vorchans could be built. So Centauri upgraded and maintained 200 years old Primus' despite its problem with power generation to new weapons while fielding huge wolf packs of Vorchan fleets and only used Primus when they needed fighter presence and planetary assault missions, since Vorchan weapons are primarily designed for space combat while Primus has also weapons for ground assault. It was the vessel that made Centauri Republic a galactic power. Demios outperformed both Vorchan and Primus, in both ship to ship and ship to ground, but was not built until years after show ended. It only appeared in Babylon 5 Lost Tales Voices in the Dark where it not only battled against Warlocks and did rather well, but also reached Earth and devastated it in alternate future that Galen and John Sherridan prevented by raising the future emperor to be a better man.

One thing I did NOT like during the series, capital ships would not last long at all when taking fire. I understand if they were under attack from Shadows or Vorlons, or there were fighters under fire from a destroyer, but species with comparable level of technology, would demolish a capital ship in a salvo or 2 ? Its like everyone forgoes any defensive capabilities, like armor, completely.

Zamolxes77 Armour hasn't been effective in real life since the 1950's on earth that's why they are working on phalanx systems for tanks. And even with armour huge dreadnought battleships were sunk by single torpedoes from speedboats (MTB's) in the past. That's why in Babylon 5 canon the Earth was able to beat the Dilgar and save all the longer space faring races because we used far more fighters than anyone but the Minbari who were at 'do not fuck with them' level by everyone else because they both had more fighters and stealth. Big ships are flashy but pretty much useless except as fighter transports in Babylon 5.

+TK-420(this is besfore the whitestar showed up on the show) I guess it depends how many and what type of ships a side can field, for earth alliance that be , oympus corvette, starfurys, the Nova,The Omega and maybe even a Couple of Warlocks if avaiable, i read on efni.org that EA could field about 400 capital ships if needed, for the Centauri illl be the Sentri Fighter, Vorchan Cruiser, Primus Battlecruiser and Valerius duno about the numbers on their fleet. I`d also say it ´ll be a close fight if nobody interfeers (mr. morden :D , or the Narns on the side of EA )
