there's also the fact that _2199_ managed to not only expand the roles of the side-characters, but also worked in many ways to expand the world-building. Several examples include the following: The Battle of Pluto in the original now being used as a form of distraction for the Gamilas to not notice the arrival of Sarsha who is bringing not a message; but the Wave Motion Core, explaining the inconsistency of Humanity somehow being able to build a Wave Motion Engine completely from scratch in just one days time: here it was because Starsha managed to send over her other sister with the plans to build the Wave Motion Engine and only needed the Core as the last component needed for it. Another was the Satellite Gun's role from the Pluto Arc being expanded to have it be the machine Shultz and Ganz uses to irradiate extrasolar meteoroids and send them on trajectory to Earth as the deadly Planet Bombs. Lastly was the little touches used to help the audience build sympathy for the Gamilas by showing the levels of corruption that were a part of their society that ranged from Racism and Classism, to their treatment of citizens and those who are outspoken, and even throwing in some much-needed emotional qualities such as Shultz being on assignment to Pluto and receiving a message from home by his daughter Hilde asking when he would be coming back home. Or the tragic home life of Erich Domel, who lost his only son Johann when he was very young, and he now spends time away from Gamilas as one of their empires greatest commanders solely as a means to try coping with the loss.

I had to catch the original star blazers right before my school bus in the mornings back in late 70's,,,hated to miss any episodes. I loved it,,,,to this day Marc Venture and Derek Wildstar are still in my head as reference to the past 40 years or so. So the original is my choice.

The comment section for this video is hands down the best one I've ever seen in ten years watching YT. Having said that, here's my contribution. Star Blazers was my absolute favorite anime back in the early 80s. It ignited my passion for sci-fi, which lasts to this day. I've been meaning to rewatch it, but realized there have been different iterations through the decades. I can't seem to find any info nowadays, but I remember seeing pictures of a future Yamato that had a four-pronged bow as well as shock cannons on the keel side - they all seemed to have three or four barrels fused together (couldn't angle independently); and there was also another series featuring the Yamato with some kind of "saucer section" in the middle of the hull - I believe it was the first CGI animation of the franchise. After watching this video, I've decided to rewatch the three original seasons, then go straight to 2199.

2199 is better than the original. It looks better, has better music, has the benefit of hindsight to streamline characters and fill in plot holes (such as the abrupt shift in Garmilas skin tones), is not tethered to the originals' commercial considerations, and has more accessible themes and sympathetic villains (which we actually learn a lot about). A Gundam Origin One-Year War arc will also be better than MSG.

(This is a LONG post - for those who read it to the end, I thank you for your patience. I'm an old fan from way back and I do not think or write in Twitter sized bites.) For a sense of nostalgia - to get the original experience. I say - watch the 1974 original Yamato. Yes - there are some oddities of a show that was finding it's way. But it IS a product of its time. And it shows. What's brilliant about Yamato 2199 is that it embraces the whole thing, warts and all. In some VERY creative ways! Here's a hilarious in hindsight example - Up until Episode 10 of the 1974 original, the Gamilas - even Dessler! - had Caucasian (white) skin tone! Then from Ep 11 onward, they were blue colored! This was the sort of thing you could get away with in 1974 when your episodes come out weekly, there's no way to record them because no Video recorders, and the audience are left thinking to themselves - "Wait... is that different? Or did I imagine that?" :D Yamato 2199 pulls the neat trick of having it BOTH WAYS - showing the Gamilas empire was truly an Empire in the Roman sense - down to having client states. And the Garrison in our solar system - the ones charged with tossing the planet bombs at us - with the characters from the original version who died in battle before the Gamilas color change took place - being members of a client state of the Gamilas whose main ambition overall is to serve the Empire loyally enough so that their people can be granted full rights as Gamilas citizens! This keeps the LOOK of the original - while at the same time adding MANY layers of character depth to antagonists who in the original were much closer to "Bumbling Bad Guy cardboard cut-outs" before we got to the competent villains like Domel and Dessler himself. You really start to feel sympathy for BOTH sides. And when the Client State garrison commander meets his demise, he and his crew does so with a dignity and pathos that the original never were allowed. Another smaller example is the treat of seeing characters like Captain Yamanami - who featured prominently in Arrividerci Yamato and Yamato II (Comet Empire) as either the Captain of the Yamato or a rival ship the Andromeda (depending on whether it's the movie or the TV series) - show up early in Yamato 2199 so that we confirm continuity. There are little treats and Easter eggs like that all through 2199. Both confirming and yet giving better explanations and background for all of it - only changing things where they absolutely must. The last example is the ship itself. The length of the ship was always canonized at 265 meters because that's nearly exactly the length of the original sea-going battleship Yamato and the producers insisted that it stay that way. Why? Because the original Space Battleship was supposed to be LITERALLY the old wreck refurbished. Even taking into account the "rubber physics that this show is known for, our suspension of disbelieve WILL break now more than in 1974. Refurbishing the ACTUAL wreck is WILDLY impossible now that we understand two things - first - we now have a much better understanding of the process of corrosion at those depths. In 200 years there will not BE any wreckage left to resurrect, there will only be nodules of iron oxide and maybe a few scraps of the thicker armor sections left. The other thing that kind of kills the concept of a resurrected Yamato is that the wreck is in worse shape than originally thought when the show began in 1974. (In fact they hadn't even FOUND the wreck until after the original run of the shows and movies concluded in 1983!) They thought it sank in one piece and landed upright. But in fact, the Yamato is broken badly into 3 distinct chunks and two of them are upside down. Yeah - that ain't happening... So the remake version is NOT the original resurrected Battleship. It's built in the same spot. And likely the high concentration of iron ore from the original wreck helped disguise the construction from sensors. And it is built largely in the same shape - also for camouflage (but also for other reasons which don't bear going into in this post). But the space version is no longer locked into the concept of being the same size. In fact it's significantly (though not wildly) larger than the original, at 333 meters in length. Not to mention that the fighter bay as portrayed with it's GENIUS "carousel" launching concept actually FITS WITHIN THE HULL and both it and the engine room actually make sense! (The original Yamato - we fans always joked - had to be part TARDIS!) That's all the technical side of things - but what I would REALLY like to compliment Yamato 2199 for - is keeping the same SPIRIT as the original. It is a more complex and layered story - but the sense of romanticism and adventure is 100% the SAME. While I do urge any serious fan to watch the original. I think Yamato 2199 is probably more accessible to younger fans, and they really won't miss anything important.

"the Gamilas - even Dessler! - had Caucasian (white) skin tone" That was, in fact, is being used as prime example of risks of outsourcing outside of Japan for ages. The final painting of cells were outsourced to a company in China (PROC, not Taiwan), with color code specifying Gamilas skin to be blue. Chinese reaction "No, humans don't have blue skins." "They're aliens!" "Don't care, this's human skin clolor." And it took that long to correct the whole mess (how, I never found out)
@logandarklighter
@logandarklighter 4 жыл бұрын
@@LieshaCichol Yeah - that's laughably absurd, of course. But it kind of reinforces the genius of Yamato 2199 in turning what used to be a bad continuity joke completely on it's ear and adding richness to their world - all based on an original mistake in cel coloring by stubborn outsourced studios! That's almost Douglas Adams "throwing yourself at the ground and missing" levels of enlightened serendipity! :D

It was made for a 1974 Japan only audience in mind, so it is a bit of a cultural and historical document. Watch the new version for all that stuff just mentioned in the video above.

I kinda prefer 2199 in term how they showing Garmilas side, My fav Gammy, Domel have interesting story in 2199 also he's a man of honor and he have better plan compare to original in dealing with Yamato. while in original, I kinda don't like it that they show him as "Person that almost destroy one of his own base because of single ship" just my opinion, then in 2199 we have that old man that is in charge of Pluto base, before his death we saw him accepting his death and thinking about his wife and daughter, showing that he is also a normal person that have family that he loves. What really got me in 2199 remake is the fact that Earth attack first, what Melda say kinda stunned me "Terron indeed like to fight, they even fire before even formal declaration of war" I stunned because that is what happen during Pearl Harbor, Japan indeed goes to many war before WW2, like Russo Japanese war and in China, and then they indeed didn't Send formal declaration of war when attacking pearl harbor. also that moment when They sang Garmilas March together, one of the most epic moment in anime. nice review by the way, have you saw the OVA of SBY 2199? *spoiler alert* in that Ova you will learn Berger ( one of Domel closest friend, leader of the purple Carrier squadron ) also will be the first time Yamato fought together with Garmilas against Gatlantis.

When the original aired in Japan in 1974 the programs was called terabi manga or tv comics (I apologize if I misspelled it). Because of the fans and the cinema success of Yamato they started calling these programs anime and Yamato was the first anime boom. As Starblazers it didn't hide its origins. It was the first anime in America to state its original title at the end and if I remember correctly the first to state the creator of the show in the end credits. The original has something the remake doesn't, it makes you care and cry for joy and sadness. The dubbed version was very potent with that. Because the show pulled you in it had the same effect on me the 100th time watching it as it did the first time watching it. Because of this I suggest you watch the original first then the remake. The remake has better animation (though the original was top of the line for the time) and in some regards the story is better too. I suggest you watch them all in order, its a great experience. Have fun!

Sub plots and supporting cast were far superior. The space battles in 2199, left the original in the dust. Not only better animation, obviously, the battles themselves were so very well done. The original Yamato is my absolute favorite anime of all time and when I watched the remake I was honestly moved to tears by it. It managed to do something so few remakes do and that’s keep the soul of the original material in tact while being unafraid to try new things for itself. It tells the same story with the same heart in its own special language and it made me cry by the time it was over. My absolute only complaint was the strange fan servicey crotch shots on the female uniforms, but the originals oddly placed fanservice upskirt moments were just as obnoxious lol

The cool part about 2199, is they kept all the plot points from the original, even if the characters featured were different. Mutiny, check. I felt the Sunohara focused episode was a nod to the Space Storm episode from the Original, just as Yamamoto was the focus of the Gamilas Pilot Episode (and Melda was a great addition to the cast, Glad she got some Screen Time in 2205) among others

I love the original and the remake. This franchise has a special place in my sci-fi heart. As a first generation Mexican-American kid growing up in the capital of Silcon Valley, San Jose, Ca, in the 70’s and 80’s and figuring out US culture and learning to speak English, and thinking all cartoons where American; back then, I had no idea of Japaense animation. But I remember watching this incredible cartoon after school and thinking “there is something different and special about this cartoon” besides the fact that cartoon charaters died or were killed, “what the fuck” my kid brain would think as it was blown away. The production design was top notch, right up there with Star Wars, to this day the Yamato is one of my favorite space ships ever created. And to think that this came out 3 years before Star Wars!! It has some of the most memerable space battle scenes ever, the musical score is epic! I find myself singing in jiberish Japaense and English dubbed the opening theme quite often. And it was also my introduction to anime, that lead to my love affair with Macross aka Robotech and Japense culture in general. And it also introduced to me the idea of a culture taking a ‘product’ from one culture and giving it their own unique spin on it. As an immigrant kid, I really appreciated that and I am grateful to have grown up in a country like the US, that brought so much of the rest of the world to me. 🇯🇵🇺🇸🇲🇽

I'm rewatching 2199 for the fifth-or-so time right now. I remember Star Blazers on Saturday morning TV in the early 1980s. The 1974 original is good, and important. 2199 is _even better_ in every way. I was badly disappointed in 2202 though, compared to the original. For some reason they changed the writer and director between 2199 and 2202. It's not quite Disney Star Wars bad, but it lacked the grab-you-and-carry-you-away that 2199 has. The original second series had that iconic moment with Yuki and Kodai on the bridge of Dessler's ship, and Saito's sacrifice inside the Comet Empire, but 2202 blew it, going for the big visuals at the cost of plot and character. In my opinion.

As to which series to watch...if you're a (serious) Matsumoto fan, the original SBY (Space Battleship Yamato) *should* be part of your collection. I've had the good fortune to obtain a copy of the original Japanese version of SBY (RE: Starblazers) which does help with story comprehension; the American version was pretty hacked up, but not as badly as some imported animes. OTOH, I consider USY (Uchuu Senkan Yamato) 2199 to be a superior product, though not for the reasons you might think. Yes, the computer animation for 2199 is probably (IMO) some of the best out of Japan in the past 10+ years. But it's the increased depth of the story / characters (on BOTH sides of the battlefield) that makes 2199 shine; the 'bad guys' in 2199 are much more than cardboard villains to punch holes in, and there's a real effort to connect the viewer with the (deep) story, and ALL the characters within. USY 2199 should be a *must watch* for the crowd at Pixar, and (especially) Disney...THIS is how you make a story worth telling, AND watching.

I've seen three different versions of the series: Crucero Espacial Yamato when I was a kid in Mexico in the late 70s, Star Blazers in the US in the early 80s and Uchu Senkan Yamato 2199. I've also seen the live action movie. My favorite is Star Blazers for sentimental reasons. The first version I saw was the Mexican dub but it was shown with distracting subtitles over the Japanese titles. Every now and then the japanese track would bleed through. The best one I would say is Uchu Senkan Yamato 2199. They kept the best parts of the original anime: the story, the music and even the sound effects but with more backstory dedicated to the Gamilas as well as the crew of the Yamato. The animation is also next level awesome.

You missed the most important difference, which is exploration of Gamilas society and the stresses and competing factions - the old nobility, the imperial guard, Dessler's regime etc. It's by far the biggest difference and also the most interesting. The Garmilas in 2199 are not just stock villains - they're a fully realized society. I loved Yamato as a kid and it has a special place in my heart, but 2199 is considerably superior.

Been sitting on the fence on this one. My friend and I are mixed on which one to watch first (we are watching Captain Harlock '78 right now. I've seen it so many times but this is her first time. She adores the Captain, and who doesn't?) but 2199 really turn us off from the few fanservice scenes we've seen. Also comparing the two series made me think the original would be better suited for us. Also retro anime is our weakness. Probably going to watch the original first. Still this was an amazing video to compare the two. You showed both sides on this (and seeing the original clips makes me want to watch it even more but I have to wait until my friend finishes Harlock. XD;;; ) so thank you! I hope to one day my friend and I will finally get to watch this amazing show.

I watch both and the original series is way better. It add a human touch to the Gamalons. It was really cool watching the Gamalons and the earthlings team up together to take on the Comic Empire. I felted it was a sadder story and when you watched you felt nobody was safe. Everybody had a chance to die. 2199 seemed to predictable. 2199 was a good story but the original brought more depth to the Gamalons and to me what make a good story is flushing out the back stories of both the protagonist and the antagonist. You learn that people in war are all noble because the just want to be a service to their planet.

I just finished 2199 and 2202. Both were fantastic stories, with only one thing in 2202 bugging me. I didn’t find Kato’s (fighter wing commander) actions totally believable throughout, especially given that he had to know as well as the rest of the crew that the Gatlantians were out to annihilate all life. He had a nice redemption arc I guess, but his initial betrayal felt contrived to me.

I've seen the original series many times since it aired on US TV as Star Blazers. I've seen 2199 three times and the sequel series 2202 once. I whole-heartedly recommend the original series, especially in HD. It may be nostalgia talking, but many dramatic moments from the classic series were reimagined in 2199, but not as well done. IMHO. The animation and amount of moving parts on the screen is much greater in the newer series, but there are some clumsy bits where the momentum somewhat peters out. Also, the classic series is hand-drawn animation, which gives it a more "artistic" look (like Picasso). The new series is digital, meaning everything is straight lines and perfect curves and brushless colors. It's amazing, but I'll take Chagall over Rembrandt any day.

I watched the original as a 10 and 11 year old when it first aired in 1979 and 1980, and I have the original on DVD because it is so good. But 2199 is even better, keeping almost all elements of the original plot but reworking it to make it tighter and more compelling. This reboot shows how it should be done, with people who love the original and stay true to the spirit of the original.

Captain Avatar and leader Desslock's voice overs are just beyond dissaponting. How could anything replace Desslock's smug always calm but intimidatingly British accent?? and Avatar's gravely old ship Captain gone as well? No!! Other than that great stuff. 7am rain, shine, even snow-days, had to be up for Star Blazers. There is NOTHING in tv, film, or life that compares to the sound of the Wave Motion Gun in the original series. The countdown/buildup, the click of the trigger, slight silent pause, then the spine jarring super electric power buzz followed by the raw, sheer , unleashed power of trillions of tachyon particles screeching and screaming through the universe. Yeah. That’s how you do a super weapon. They changed it for 2199, though. Wonder why.

I watched the original on TV as a young kid. (It was part of the Boston-area TV hour that included Star Blazers and Force 5) But I find the new one to be much more digestible both for me and my kids. The old anime (the visual) doesn't age well unless you have a real interest in 70's era anime. I couldn't get either of my kids (teen and tween) interested in the old one at all. FWIW, I also like the new dubbed voices vs the original English dubbed voices I grew up with.

I saw the original series and fell in love with it immediately. I had never seen anything like it before. Can't remember exactly when I saw it. It had to be in the late Seventies or early Eighties. I came across a 5 volume graphic novel about the series as well as two books with art work of the characters and the Yamato. And a book of individual Cels. When I heard about 2199 I had to check it out. Great graphics, but somewhat disappointing in that it was shortened a bit. Overall I did enjoy it especially since it came in Blu-Ray as well as DVD. I am currently watching 2202, Part One.

On "the ship gets damaged in battles only to be repaired" part, you might want to check 2199 ep 24, about 3:58 mark. You can see the scratches marks on the bow of the ship that she sustained from ramming into a building in previous episode. In the original show where it was all hand drawn, so keeping track of damage and consistency was near impossible, while CGI model of the ship in 2199 can track those damages.

I'm not wild about the character designs in the new SBY2199 series. Makes them look a little too teen-aged, particularly Kodai and Desslar. On the other hand, the overall artistic design and the animation are lightyears ahead of the 1970s original, the visuals much more ambitious, and the CGI enhancements blend in with and add to instead of distracting from the cel animation work. Visually, the new series really POPS. There's just no denying this.

I've watched all of the original and I'm almost done the first season of 2199! I definetly prefer the original so far! The original is just perfect! The new one ruined a few things after seeing the original in my opinion, the reboot is good but it's not as good as the original! I'm only 13 and my dad told me he used to watch the original as a kid, the remake changed so many things that it made me mad, but it's getting better, but original forever!! I was also kinda mad how they made Yuki kinda rude at first in 2199 cause shes supposed to be sweet, but adding more girls was great! Also 2202 was based off the movie "farewell to yamato" which was an alternate storyline to season 2, where they all died, and Teresa was different and never fell in love with shima, which I was sad about, I definitely prefer the old one, but the new one is very good in it's own way!

You are slightly wrong about the Yamato in 2199. She is not the sunken battleship but one purposed built for the Izumo plan. The superstructure that was visible was a decoy as they built this ship underground near the surface. They changed over to the Yamato plan a few years before 2199 when Iscandar sent help to build the wave motion engine.

Both are great. However 2199 is just a little better. The original only had one woman on the Yamato/Argo while the 2199 had several woman characters. More believable. 2199 does a better job telling the characters story. This is one of the rare instances where the reimagined is a little better then the original.

I agree, though I wouldn't use modern sensibilities as an argument in this case. Having few if any women on board would have made a lot more sense to people back in the 70s. But yes I do appreciate that they expanded and fleshed out the staff a lot more in 2199

@@AnimeTopScholar Fun Fact: in the original Yamato series, there was about a baker's dozen of female characters, but they got cut out in (Americanized) Starblazers edit. I like the original one. That's old school anime style. I watched it back in 1979 at 8 years old. I love the artwork, animation original voice actors(Ken Meseroll/Wildstar, Tom Tweety/Venture, Amy Howard/Nova, Eddie Allen/Desslok/Dash, etc)and plot better than the remake. The remake is to modernize in animation and they added new characters that didn't appeal to me. That series in 1974 didn't have a great impact on the audience until 1977 when Star Wars was released, it got their attention and wanted more science fiction and Space Battleship Yamato came back with the series edited into a 2 hour movie and Yamato boom was born. Watch the dvd documentary Space Battleship Yamato: Making of an Anime Legend. It has lots of history and info about how the series were created and their success.

Unfortunately, I thought 2202 was nowhere near as good as 2199, They should have hewed more towards Series 2 rather than Movie 2, imo. It wasn't terrible but there are some questionable decisions they made during the construction of the story. (Basically sidelining the newer crewmembers introduced in 2199, The Wave Motion Gun Spam, Desler's highly unbelievable "Redemption", and Yamamoto's plot armor for a few) Glad they righted the course, so to speak, in 2205, which I thought was great.

The only complain I have from 2199, which is a big one and really makes it hard for me to say 2199 was better than the original, is the story of Kodai's brother. In the original, we find him on Iskandar. In the new one, we don't find him anywhere. This was so important for Susumu in the original series and made for some heart warming very moving scenes, which don't exist in 2199.
