15 years making keys and I still use space and depth key sets. In fact I still use the Foley-Belsaw Machine I bought used on eBay 15 years ago. I make them quickly and accurately. I only use that machine for strictly code cutting keys. I have another OLD Curtis Automatic Machine that’s strictly for duplication. Both machines make super accurate cuts. My keys look like fine cut jewelry.. Love both those machines over my more expensive ICO Orion High Speed Duplicator. As long as the machine has good bushings and a sharp cutting wheel you don’t need to spend a lot of money to cut great keys.

Jason, just thanks for all your videos. I learn more fro watching you tidy up your bench or go out on jobs, than I do from dozen picking videos. I look up ad find more info on the things you do that catch my interest or are new to me and it's like following the master. Keep up the great vlogs and vids. I appreciate everything you do. THANK YOU!

Excellent point. The locksmith walks a fine Web between Houdini, lawyer, cop, and his/hers own instincts. Nice point my friend...

Great video!! I’ve actually been wanting some space and depth keys to start hand filing keys for challenge locks. Also, I don’t know if they have it in your state, but here the dept of corrections website will let you search a name for convictions in the state. Publicly available for free, and it only shows actual convictions and not charges.

Very helpfull Jason! Great uses for space and depth keys... And some great tips on proof of ownership stuff.... I actually have a Foley Belsaw, lol Its working alright, just for small stuff but im sure I'll eventually get a bigger machine.

Thank you for the information. There is a great article about this in the NDE magazine, likely 1 or 2. Space and dept keys are less common here in Europe. Likely because there are way too many brands and profiles. I estimate the most common lock has a 5 to 10% market share in the best case scenario. Dutch locksmiths won't make you a new key if you cant provide the original, they only make copies.

What would you do if a customer comes in with the key code for his lock? Would you code cut him a key or would it be a rekey of the lock?
@killer2600 Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting scenario for two reasons 1) My sister used that method (have a key cut by code) to rectify accidently locking herself out of a bedroom. 2) What benefit would code numbers/cuts stamped on keys or key tags be of use to the lock owner if locksmiths would be unwilling to use those numbers to make customer's a key.

So how do you store all this personal verification data you’ve been collecting on your customers?
@selock5 жыл бұрын
CandyGramForMongo we don’t “collect” or “store” the info we only verify ownership of the property to the best of our ability
@CandyGramForMongo_5 жыл бұрын
So when the cops show up and start asking questions, what do you show them? Have you ever been approached by law enforcement in an investigation? That could be a cool video!
@selock5 жыл бұрын
CandyGramForMongo we have about other issues simply because we have officers/detectives/etc in about every other day anyway getting patrol car or precinct keys made so if there’s ever a “key/lock/breakin” issue that’s unexplainable to them they will come here and ask if we know about whatever they don’t know. There have been a few instances over the years where people working as a (heavily quoted) “””locksmith””” has made keys for vehicles not belonging to the person. In one case they took the vehicle and crashed it into several businesses to steal from them. If we can’t get verification they own it, we don’t do it :)
