Glad to see Yachting World also questioning why traditional blue water monohull cruising yacht builders so far have passively looked at at the growing cat cruising market. I'd love to see e.g. a fully electrified sun & wind powered Oyster Cat which is safe, fast and can go anywhere. In the mean time, it would be interesting to see more YW reviews of current premium cat brands like Balance, Sunreef, Seawind, Outremer and others. I'm sure Toby would enjoy it and also learn more about these boats of the future.

SO GLAD you pointed out rounded corners! Way too many of the modern boats look like inland apartments furnished by Scan Design. Fine for apartments but you don't want your hip banged up against a pointy corner when you are 200 (or perhaps a 1000) miles offshore. Stupid.

Cats are a massive part of the yacht market now. I have only been skippering professionally for 15 years But in that time the market has grown. You had cats in the Caribbean and the odd world cruiser. But now so many live aboard. All the cats in charter in the med. On the discovery WHY the self tacking , horrid how often does a cat tack up the Solent, rubbish to run down wind, and when it's blowing and you want a small storm sail, you furl part away, you cannot shape it. Low down helm and boom. You can tell it's not a charter boat, 50kn winds in mega seas isn't nice on a top helm lagoon. That keeps it tight.

You definitely know what you are talking about because I don’t really understand any of that LoL. I envy you and a life at sea. My hat is off to you and most likely a beautiful way to live life. I’ve been a boater my entire life but speedboats and on a river in my backyard or a beautiful lake 2-1/2 hours North in Wisconsin. Peace.
@TraneFrancks4 жыл бұрын
"On the discovery WHY the self tacking" -- It's oriented to easy single-handing, I would presume. Besides, you've got the genoa forward that can be reefed, yes? And for downwind, we can always use a Code D or a Parasailor. Self-tacking jib seems generally to be a non-issue, IMO. Horses for courses. If you don't like the rig, don't buy it, I guess. 😊

I would love to move to a proper cat rather than a three storey villa on hulls like most of them. This looks like it would fit the bill, small matter of the £1.5 million might be a problem. Never mind the dog decoration, dogs would love it rather than sliding to leeward every time you go about. Ask Discovery nicely if they will lend you one for a couple of days for a proper test? If crew is a problem I can probably help out? Great video!

It didn't seem that stable underway in what was moderate sea conditions. It seemed to be pitching quite violently. To much buoyancy in the forward hull sections or low bridge deck clearance maybe? That motion just ain't right by comparison to other cats I have seen sailing in similar and lumpier conditions than shown in this video

A mono hull will in most cases sink if the hull is breached and fills with water. Not so a cat. One sailed out of new Zealand turned upside down and the three occupants drifted around the pacific for three months surviving in the hulls before they were washed up on shore. Ironicly they landed back in the country they departed from.

@@yachtingworld Hey Toby. Love Discovery, and climbed around a 50cat and 58 at the SotonBS. Agree on the lack of performance data. YM do a good job there. For a mono to cat decision, the numbers are important. Read the article. Nice. But 7 to 7.5 in 20-23 would be disappointing to most owners of a blue 50+ mono. And the windward performance? Perhaps it was so poor you didnt want to comment. Solent chop and overweight could not have helped. Did Discovery comment on the decision for no daggerboards? Every yacht is a compromise. I think Discovery have done a great job for their target market, and at a great price for the quality.

Totally misses the point when comparing cats to monohull. Monohull lovers want to feel the boat cut the the water. To bury the rails. To feel safe on the edge. Much more a feel of harnessing nature.

Trying to make a silk purse there , Toby! Good effort mate ! Why anyone would want one of these as opposed to say, a Balance 526, is way beyond me. Nothing attractive either above or below decks. Every aspect just looks wrong and looks years out of date. Those cabin layouts hardly scream quality. Discovery need to have a word with themselves here. Stick to what you are very good at and sack this cat asap. Jeep had an advertising campaign were people would proudly announce the fact that "I bought a Jeep". In the severe off-roading conditions down here in Western Australia , anyone turning up in the bush with a new Jeep is often met with howls of derision and incredulity. You bought a Jeep? Really? What were you thinking! And that`d be my reaction to any of my friends announcing that they had bought a disco cat. Sorry Discovery, more effort is required. It`s nil point from the WA jury.
