just a quick note, with the exception of ion thrusters and large grid atmospheric thrusters, you can get more thrust by using small thrusters for the same amount of blocks then large thrusters meaning you can make the module of thrusters a lot smaller when building internal thruster setups, though this generally come at a cost of a bit more weight and fuel/power cost

So, if you pressurize a room in the middle of your ship, can you use atmospheric thrusters in space ?

Was working on something similar years ago, problems arise when you start trying to make it complete. You sacrifice vast quantities of interior space for thruster room, while at the same time making the whole ship body much much larger. The real problem is when you try to make it for a role, be it combat or mining, as the ship becomes extremely bulky very quickly, which adds mass, which requires thrust, so either you reach an underweight balancing act, or an oversized paperweight.

I've seen large grid thrusters enclosed using diagonal half blocks inside of what looks like the thruster plume but still leaving most of the brighter of the plume uncovered which i think worked because of the collision boundaries of the plume only reaching halfway into the blocks on the outside. Perhaps you could test that next?

Well considering the fact that a small hydrogen thruster has roughly 100kN of thrust and the large one 500kN, you should just use 9 small ones on ships which also has the added benefit of only destroying 2 blocks infront of it.
@JeffreyBlakeney3 жыл бұрын
Large grid armour blocks can be damaged by the deformation of neighbouring armour blocks being broken. That is probably what happened with the corner blocks on your large hyrdrogen thruster test. Also, you can get this information from a handy mod called BuildInfo. It can show all sorts of information such as the damage area of thrusters as well as connectable faces, air tight faces and it can even tell you if grinding down a block will create two separate grids. The air leak finding function is fantastic as well. Haven't used all the features of this mod but here is the Steam Workshop page for it: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=514062285&searchtext=build+info

Fun fact: ion thrusters have a unique shape and a narrow enough plume that you can actually put them closer together if you offset the center of the thruster. You still have to be careful how your rotate them but it allows you to mess with the dimensions of your internal thrust cluster if you need a particular arrangement or just hate symmetry.

used to be that ion thrusters needed 4 blocks clearance for small thrusters and 6 blocks clearance for large.... grid size scaled appropriately....large thrusters also used to affect the full 2x3 area behind them for the full 6 block length...

You’ve made an oopsie with the IONs. They don’t really make any thrust in the atmosphere due to the ions themselves colliding with the air. Therefore the ‘thrust beam’ couldn’t reach the blocks. You should retest the ions in a vacuum.

When building ships I always hide the thrusters or I leave only the flame part showing. I made a puddle jump like the one from Stargate Atlantis with Atmos and H2 thrusters all inside. I use it to go to space and search for ore and GSP them. Since the puddle jumper has retractable sides I put the H2 thrusters I need to exit Earth's atmosphere on them. So unless I'm going to space, I never need to open the retractable sides which is part of the original puddle jump from SG-A. And, once in space, I can close them again and search for my ores. With the sides closed it looks like a brick, lol, you can't even tell it has retractable sides or thrusters inside. As for thruster damage distance, I always take a look at this wiki page: www.spaceengineerswiki.com/Thruster
