UPDATE: The handle is gray powder coated. The small mark on the handle easily washed off with some soap and water--it was cardboard fibers!

Carried a short Ka Bar tanto in Afghan and Iraq. That thing took so much abuse it was almost a satin blade haha. Lost it in transit. Miss that thing a lot.

Doc- The town is pronounced Oh-lee-ann, home of St. Bonaventure University. A few years ago, my best buddy brought over his USMC Ka-Bar that he carried in Vietnam. He asked me to clean it up. The dirt caked on it was from Nam. It was in remarkably good shape. It was an honor to clean that bad boy. I just got the Ka-Bar Big Brother because it was designed in my hometown. Just a beast that is bigger than this model. I just moved to Tennessee to escape the Soviet Republic of NY. BTW- Some of our early astronauts took Randall made knives into space.

The weight doesn't really matter in space as everything is weightless, and as long as it can tear through space suits it'll do just fine.

It matters in the sense that you have to send it into space. Weight is a factor for launch, but you're right, not once you get there!

Mr. Doctor Frunkey, first and foremost I want to mention how much I enjoy your videos. They are absolutely outstanding. I have learned a lot from you and another youtuber I watch. Thank you sir. Just one comment to share, I could be wrong, however, I believe it's called a blood groove as it is designed as a fighting knife. It's supposed to used to easily remove the blade from the enemies body so it doesn't get stuck inside them when our soldiers use it for such a task. It's also supposed to prevent dripping blood from going near the users hands.

In all honesty... it’s basically a USMC Kabar with silver coating instead of black with a plastic handle other then stack leather. I think every one is better off with the USMC. This is still really cool nonetheless... you mentioned it’s too heavy for space but remember.. there is less gravity in space.. bet that thing ways less then an ounce in orbit!! 😜 great video Frank!

If the handle had a full tang, it would be great. When I was 12 years old, a buddy and me were goofing around and he broke his Ka Bar blade on a 12'x12' post. Never trusted them since. But with a full tang, 1095 would be good...

Well, to counter that story. I had a Ka-bar 1213. Hammered on the pommel with a 1.5kg club hammer. Hard. Sideways, all kinds of ways. The tang did bend, but no breakage at all. And I went really hard on it. I was impressed how it held up. Full width tang knives are overrated . It's something of 'these days'. All the swords in the past were hidden tang. Exceptions aside. Roman Gladius , Crusader sword, one and a half sword. Sabers etc. They are very tough, and more comfortable in use. Especially in cold weather. If a hidden tang is good enough for a Roman legionair, you can trust that design. They conquered Europe with it. Aside of that, throw a 'tough' ESEE knife and the scales will pop off. Batoning does the same with many. With machete's the scales also often gets loose with intensive (chopping) use. Not the case when they are injection molded polypropylene. I'm not against full width tang. But I like lets say, a Mora much better than a handle where the tang is visible and touching the hand. It does all I need.

I know Schrade has a similar knife that is all 1 piece. The blade and handle is all forged from 1 piece. I don't know about this Ka Bar. I'd like to have this Ka Bar but only if it's built like the Schrade. These Rambo style knives are usually 2 piece knives that are easy to break. The handles are usually hollow and welded on to the blade. Schrade's Rambo knife is legit. The tang on that knife is the handle itself.

Thank you for your video. Regarding 7:52, the name "Blood Groove" is a misnomer and its purpose is not designed for exsanguination. Instead its real name is called the "Fuller". The Fuller on a blade improves its strength & rigidity while also increasing its surface area through a cross section and reducing its weight. For example, a steel I Beam has improved strength & rigidity over that of a flat solid bar. Similarly corrugated sheet steel is stronger & more rigid than flat sheet steel. Some swords even have double fullers for improved strength & rigidity while also making them lighter.

Ka-Bar has custom shop that had THE STATE AND UNION 2 knife with Super steel,but only so many made ,and sold out by time I had enough dough for it. Was it beautiful!!!! I miss the charm of Union Cutlery\Ka-bar woodcraft knives of early era.. I have some unused in collection,dream knives..

Got my fathers kbar that he used in Vietnam. Rem him using that on every hunting trip went on with him and all the stuff he sill was able to do with this knife when I was younger. KWant to replace this old black leather sheath he has with the blade cause it’s so old and falling apart,being held together with electrical tape of all things. The things he had to use the knife on still makes me wonder. He was part of the brown water navy in Vietnam attached to a army unit, he did underwater demo and patrolled the rivers going up and down em on pt boats and swift boats etc. whatever could get him to we’re they needed to blow up something guess.
