It would be nice if we had active shielding like an electromagnetic field similar to how earth is protected. But that may not be possible yet, so these options seem feasible for the interim.

Jamie Godman Technologically feasible already with current technology, but the amount of electrical energy required would be astounding. You'd need a battery practically bigger than the vessel itself.

Build a Mars spacecraft on the moon and launch it from the moon. Build a heavy duty spacecraft which the main section never lands. That way the main ship in orbit is heavy but have shielding around the ship. The main habitat and command section would have 3-inch thick aluminum walls and the inside can be lined with hydrogen-rich plastics. Also, you could have a torus creating a magnetic field on board from a 50 KW power source.

The only way to go is to invent a light weight shielding to envelope the entire structure, whatever it may be. This way the people are not hindered by the scramble to get inside some "box" inside the Habitation Module.

be better designing the deflectors too but yeah looks good for emegency situations. guess solar storms are vast yeah deflector arrays aren't my thing , unless of course we could spin up some flash webs, you know explosive filleds light disipation nanotubing. Damn it's not recyclable though. Has to be the artificial ozone ray, same principle of gas mix , expressed in laser exitement of a localised hull cavity.

As it is with all these designs, none considers the temperature control problem. A vacuum has no temperature, only matter has, and so there is no cooling by conduction and convection possible, but by radiation only, the capacity of which, per unit of area at room temperature, is just a fraction of what it is to water and air on Earth. We simply do not have an energy technology that can achieve more than in the ISS. Visit - draaisma.net - to read more about it (the 2nd Law for space habitats).
