I mean, there are a lot of health concerns for that when it comes to gravity, bodily functions, muscular health, etc. Let alone how viable it would be to bring in and out resources. Would be interesting to continue research into it, but the planet we have could definitely use some TLC if we want to last long enough to even have these choices - and that doesnt even begin to touch the social imbalance that wouldn't be fixed by having rich people just live in orbit of us

The O’Neill cylinder rotates using centrifugal force (which is the force of rotation). If you want an example of that, it’s like one of those spinning rides in a theme park, and centrifugal force is the reason you get pulled to the outer part of your seat.

Both cases must be developed because due to the universe's natura eventually a collission will occur so we need both space habitats and terraformed planets so that we can keep having options to prevent a (in future terms) incoming collission with a solar system, planet, black hole, galaxy etc.

terraforming is just magic at this point. the absurd amounts of energy and time required is just insane. we have no idea how to even start thinking about how to do it. let alone actually terraform anything. also as someone once said, if you can terraform other planets, why not just terraform earth, to make it better for humans to live. that would take far less resources.

@@Kyonari yes, in the magical world of fiction. but in our reality, that is nonsensical whishful thinking. it would genuinely take thousands of years with our technology to force mars to create an atmosphere that can trap heat. and even if we did, like someone else mentioned, we have absolutely no way of forcing its core to spin again, which is what's required for it to develop a magnetic field and without that, any atmosphere created, would just be washed away on the first solar wind to hit it. so go ahead and dream about it, but understand where we are today technologically before beliving its trully possible.

The safer option would be terraforming, but that's so difficult that it's impractical. We'll probably have to have space colonies until we figure out how to terraform, or we just build domes/habs on the surface of planets.
