Yeah but these games were at least "playable". Space Harrier 2 was almost unplayable because of the framerate and scaling problems...
@MrThunderwing2 жыл бұрын
That would've been cool, but at least you can play those in MAME for a better experience (or the Saturn, 3DS or Cannonball for a 60fps Outrun, that's also wide-screen in the latter 2). This is interesting as a truly unique remake of an old and graphically compromised game.

I think I figured out what's causing the flickering, the original version limited how many shots the player can fire and the new version does not. So you end up breaking the 20 sprite per scanline limit much more often.

The updated space harrier 2 looks awesome. If that was released back in 88 with the scaling like it has Sega most likely would of blown the console war out the water. Imagine super hang on,outrun, turbo outrun, Super thunderblade Galaxy force, all choppy frame rates released with scaling that smooth would of been mind blowing back then..

I wouldn't have hated Space Harrier II so much if it had been this buttery smooth from the start. It's awesome seeing the Genesis DO this.

Is it the Genesis doing it at all? It's a significantly modified emulator.
@ostiariusalpha Жыл бұрын
@@Aberusugi Correct, the mini is not emulating an actual Genesis/Mega Drive here, but rather it is emulating the hardware of a hypothetical console. During the early planning stages of the Genesis, back when it was simply labeled as the Mark V, there were several hardware features that were canceled to reduce production costs; one of which was a scaling algorithm unit in the VDP. The Mini 2 is really emulating a 'what if" console, where the originally planned scaling hardware was kept.
@arhum1224 Жыл бұрын
@@ostiariusalpha So does that mean if we were to rip this rom out of the Mini and into a PC emulator. The game would not start/crash?
@ostiariusalpha Жыл бұрын
@@arhum1224 If you have the Mark V emulator core, then yes, it will run. But you would have to rip that out of the Mini 2 along with the ROM, since that is currently the only device that stores that emulation software.

I wish they would release a new Mark V hardware, compatible with sega genesis games. It would be awsome to see New games for the plataform the it should have been originaly.
@ShiitakeWarrior2 жыл бұрын
Considering how "Mark V" was the original name of the Mega Drive when it was in development, I'd say this feels more like a "Mark VI" of sorts were it not for the fact that the hardware for the original Space Harrier game was labelled as the "Super Scaler". (Which was used for Space Harrier and Hang-On in 1985, while the SEGA Mega Drive was first released in Japan, three years later in 1988.) But still, at least now we can get _some_ idea of how Space Harrier II might have appeared, had it been released on a Super Scaler arcade system like that for the original Space Harrier. _(Oh, gosh! Can you imagine this_ NEW _version of Space Harrier II in a DELUXE arcade cabinet, complete with hydraulic tilting system and roll cage?)_

@videogameobsession2 жыл бұрын
It's the emulation of the "Mark V" that allows it to play like this. It's basically the Genesis w/ scaling built-in. So the the basic rom wouldn't do much good.
@Spengali12 жыл бұрын
@@videogameobsession But there is no console known as the SEGA Mark V. That was just the original name for the Mega Drive during development. Was there ever a prototype Mega Drive that included Super Scaler-like hardware? Not that I've ever seen or read about so this updated game just seems to take advantage of the extra power of whatever processor is running the Mega Drive emulation to add these extra bells and whistles. I just hope we get some smart people doing some in-depth research into this and what it might mean for real hardware in the near future as it would be amazing if a real Mega Drive could be made to scale sprites much better than it does, even if this is done with an FPGA in a flash cart for instance.

@MrThunderwing2 жыл бұрын
Cool comparison. So, could the Megadrive have handled such silky smooth scrolling and sprite scaling like this with a bit of clever coding knowhow? Or is this version specifically taking advantage of whatever modern hardware the Sega MDM 2 is running on? I certainly don't recall any games ever looking as smooth as this back in the day.

I saw another video with Dark Harrier and when he spins around in comet mode the animation was off. The only thing they should have scaled was the columns. Everyone is right about the ground animation.
@arhum1224 Жыл бұрын
How did they achieve this? By modifying the original rom or some other emulator tricks? Also you can clearly see the original genesis mini version's floors scroll much smoother at 60fps while the reprogrammed version does not.
@Italia.9010 ай бұрын
Some say it runs on a modified megadrive emulator. But... Nobody really knows. I read some people saying the new reprogrammed version rom size is 4mb, which is huge in comparison to the original game which is just 512kb. Besides the scaling effect, some re-arranged music and a recolored palette, it's the same game.
@Galgomite2 жыл бұрын
With so much sprite flicker I wonder if they really DID program this on base hardware??? Look at the dragon during the boss battle, there's much more flicker than in the original version.
@atomicskull64052 жыл бұрын
They simply kept the original Megadrive 20 sprite per scanline limit it's simply more apparent with the smoother animation and framerate. EDIT: I figured it out, it's because the new version doesn't limit the number of shots the player can fire so you break the 20 sprite per scanline limit more often.
@edwardperkins1225 Жыл бұрын
Probably they used blitter objects merged into the background layer without using sprites do most of the obstacles in the original game, or at least one other background layer to fake sprites, but they clearly used scaling sprites in the remaster. That would explain why they flicker in one, but not the other.

By changing the ground they ruined the sense of speed. This is more of an animation principle than programing. Smother things feel slower to us.

Just an observation on the new reprogrammed version of Space Harrier II on the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2. I'm kinda disappointed with it. The scaling looks great on the enemies now but there is too much sprite flicker now introduced that wasn't there before. Plus the ground being hardware controlled removes the sense of speed present in the original version. Such a shame to see this tweaked version not hit the mark.

The new version of Space Harrier II is probably not powered by an emulator, I guess the game it's ported to the system's hardware. The sprite scaling is smoother than anything we've seen on a Mega Drive/Genesis. A lot of sprite glitching on the bosses, too bad...
