Hey man. CEO of Saber here. I love your videos. When we signed the deal to make Space Marine 2, all I wanted was a throwback game. We had the chance to work on something which by its nature was "old school". I can't even comprehend many of the current games that we play these days. They are too complex and too much of an investment. We worked on Halo back in the day, and that game could be distilled down to the simplest of shooting loops, but it was entirely addicting. That is what we wanted to recapture. I hope that games like Space Marine 2 and Wukong are the start of a reversion to a time when games were simply about fun and immersion. I spent some time as Chief Operating Officer at Embracer and I saw games there that made me want to cry with their overblown attempts at messaging or imposing morals on gamers. We just want to do some glory kills and get the heart rate up a little. For me that is what games should be about.

Thank you for Space Marine 2. As someone who's played the hell out of the first one, and still do, this was an actual game we all needed. It's pure fun, and that's how it should be. With the way so many studios and devs trying to inject their own views, real life drama and whatnot, It's become bloated with so much garbage that I'd rather play the games that came out back in the 2000s. And this game is reminiscent of those times. I hope we see many more games like this in the future, and get back what we've lost.

I'm 38 now (hard to accept even on the best days), and this game reminded me of that period of gaming in the 90s and early 00s where these kinds of game were most definitely the norm. Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Rise of the Triad, Hexen, Unreal, Turok, and then later you get into those Xbox 360 classics like Gears of War, Halo, Riddick, God of War, etc. To my older millennials, you're not crazy. Don't let people gaslight you into thinking that things really haven't changed -that- much. They have. Western developers used to not give a single shit about pushing agendas or pleasing a particular audience for fear of offending anyone. They were always pushing boundaries, no one talked about diversity for diversity's sake, ever, nothing was shoved down our throats and the only people upset about anything to do with gaming were the boomers and certain politicians who rallied against violence being depicted in games and convincing our parents that it was something terrible for us. This was a time when games were unashamedly...games. Passion projects created by some of the coolest people who have been and ever will be in the business who were like rockstars to us nerds. These were the glory days of the 'wild west' internet when there was somewhat of a barrier to entry and it wasn't so diluted with dumb content made for and by dumb people, when most of the humor was derived from the cynical nerds of Something Awful and Cliffy B. and John Romero were the butt of a large percentage of gamer jokes. The only 'drama' I remember from this era was something to do with Stevie Case posing nude and the god mode code for Hexen stirring controversy because it was '666.' Far simpler times, and arguably better. This is so long ago that Blizzard was, at the time, a company who could do no wrong, and everything they produced was gold. EVERYONE loved them. It's so sad that Space Marine 2 has become the success that it is. Not because it doesn't deserve it, but because it just reminded me, and many others, of what games used to be like before corporate bullshit and social agendas started to infect the gaming landscape. Of what that entire era was like, really. Sad because I've never been more keenly aware of what modern day gaming has become, with few exceptions, and it's shit. Absolute shit. Look at the steaming pile that Star Wars Outlaws is, and then remember this is the same company that did Splinter Cell. I wouldn't even call Space Marine 2 on its own a 9/10 game. I think it is, but a lot of that is largely because I just fucking missed games like this, so much. It's simple, it's fun, it's not trying to do too many things at once, but what it does, it does well. The older you get, it's those games that make you feel like a kid again that stick with you. Space Marine 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, Helldivers 2 to some extent. Doom Eternal. Inching closer to 40 sucks, boys. I genuinely can't believe I'm actually at this point in my life and that it came at me so quick, but at least for the last 50 hours I've already put into Space Marine 2 I was that same excited kid who shot, gibbed and gored his way through the Lovecraftian setting of the original Quake, or the sci-fi invasion of Quake II, all the way to the labs of Half-Life and the depths of hell in Doom. Space Marine 2 is special, and I'm so thankful I got to experience it.

Feels like I'm always seeing that as well, people trying to gaslight anyone complaining, saying "you got older and can't appreciate game anymore" or "games haven't changed you have" meanwhile I could always go back to older games and have a blast or occasionally find a new game I love like this. You're right, games just used to be made by gamers for gamers, no agenda or activists.

I would play Turok and Halo, God of War, but I also played a lot of Mario and Kirby. And Katamari, Tetris Attack, Final Fantasy, Spyro, Resident Evil, Phoenix Wright, Death Stranding, Bioshock, etc. And now, so many indies, where creative ideas can still flourish at their smaller, more flexible scale. From my perspective, I’m glad there are games for those who want to scratch that missing masculine itch in a big budget title, but meanwhile I’ve been so awash with a glut of variety to my liking, I haven’t noticed it’s absence. Part of this has been disinterest in what the large AAA publishers are pushing as they’ve become more monetization and less game. Literally the only times I am reminded are from SkillUp news coverage and Asmon reacting to a video bemoaning them, lol.

Like women in older games such as Re games which i love so much, women in Re games are so beloved because they just women doing their job. They’re women and need to be helped at times have their strengths and weaknesses, same as men, Lara croft, and many more. They’re women but it’s not their whole identity. Same with LGBT+ characters, I don’t have names in my mind but there are characters i love where they’re gay/les whatever and are loved because that’s not the main point of their characters... i just hate it because it’s genuinely insulting how they want to represent and don’t think of the story or why even they’re putting the characters there. And don’t let me get started with making women as strong as men, as a woman, there’s no way you can make both men and women equals in everything, there are things men can do better than women and stuff women can do better than men. Pushing the idea of being equal on every thing ESPECIALLY in body and strength is just stupid. I’ve been watching the slow disintegration of the entertainment industry for a decade. I’m 38 grew up being a gamer. I’ve seen everything Asmongold has talked about in real time. When he comes out with a video it typically aligns with exactly what I feel and saw. I won’t buy a PS5 Pro, I havnt bought any of the latest Ubisoft games. I walked away from most of gaming because of the over monetization BS. I felt torn away from companies I once beloved like Bathesda. Starfield is sign that Bathesda doesn’t have any creative drive past the creation engine. Cyberpunk 2077 is probably one of the few games in the last few years that has fixed its issues but was awesomely produced. Maybe Star Citizen will be the true next gen game. What asmongold said about Chairon's disability is true. People these days see disabilities not as problems needed to fix, but a privilege. If you have a broken leg, in Warhammer universe, they will try to replace it with whatever they can so you can still work on the field. Like a dreadnought, but they come back even better. But in real life, if people have a broken leg, they will start to cry about it while forcing others to priority them and care about their feeling. The worst thing is that, when you offer them a way to fix it, they will still cry about it because you are taking away the privilege of being a disable person. They don't care about their well being, they just care about being treated better than everybody else.

We now live in an era where you have an actor (Henry Cavill) who stands up for the fans, is loved by the audience, is loyal to the source material, literally watches as the shows he's going to star in, are rewritten, altered, and destroyed from within. How often do you find actors who actually genuinely care about the original content for a show he's about to be in? Because of this, the Amazon W40K series has already been shelved because the audience knows this is a Netflix Witcher or an Amazon RoP. This game is a tribute to content in being loyal to the IP. Meanwhile, tabletop W40K is being altered and rewritten, telling the fans that they're bigots, -phobes, -ists, -iscms, etc if they have a problem with those changes. We will always remember that if you love and respect your audience, you have a much higher chance of profit. Success breeds success. A video game that's as successful as this helps encourage gamers to look past the prior games of W40K. Let us hope it becomes a trend.
