At 1:44, Crow sang the theme to "2001: A Space Odyssey." Servo also did it at 2:59. This episode of MST3K aired in November of 1997 on the Sci-Fi Channel. The Sci-Fi Channel also aired the "Battlestar Galactica" reboot starting in 2003. I've wondered if MST3K was forbidden by the channel from making any "Battlestar Galactica" references. Was the channel in negotiations for the reboot in 1997? Did MST3K reference "2001" as a sort of proxy? (In the live RiffTrax version of "Space Mutiny" they did acknowledge that they obviously recognized the "Battlestar Galactica" footage.)

What really gets me about the movie is that if the rebels really wanted to leave the ship and look for a planet to settle on, why didnt they just say "Hey, we are tired of being on this ship, can a group of us take a space ship out of here and settle somewhere?" the only reason why they say its not possible is because "Its against the law of the Universe, the law of the Galaxy!".....Thats it? So if a group of people dont want to stay, they get executed due to treason!? Kinda sounds like the Southern Sun is a totalitarian system that rejects anything that goes against it. Im with the Rebels with this one, the protagonists are the bad guys.

Chris Brinkley now that IS a reaaonable obaervation, but given that only one guy was saying that, that we know other ships are capable of travelling between ships like this with no lefal problems and that they have transporters, he may have been lying. Plus one of the scenes they cut was that same man revealong he planned to sell the entire.crew and passengers into slavery (it was cut in this version for otherwise being mind numingly boring and actually making MORE plotholes). However that scene is not in THIS version, so both interpretaions are reasonable

Space Mutiny is my second favorite MST3K movie. Maybe it's the chicken men or the giant non-gender yam but Prince of Space takes my #1 spot. That being stated, I still pulled from Space mutiny for my youtube thumbnail and name (although "McLarge" didn't register) because it's such a great movie to mock.

The actual movie has like a brutal 10 minute long scene of Battlestar Galatica in the beginning which MST3K mercifully edited out and ultimately didn't even mention the obvious use of BSG "special effects". As a child I liked BSG which brings me great shame as an adult. Same with Johnny Socko.
