@@owengrant9066 I wish we could get more games like Day of the Tentacle which had really excellent puzzles, but plenty of point and click games coming out nowadays are better than space quest 1. Don't see what's wrong with complaining about a bad parser, a crap arcade sequence, required save scumming, a "puzzle" that requires you to stand in a specific spot and look at the ship in order to know that a required item exists, etc. I guess you could consider it part of the fun to hunt for required items and figure out what arcane commands are needed and stuff like that. There is something charmingly antagonistic about the game design, but it doesn't seem like a more thoughtful or intelligent game. It just hates you.

Would love to see your take on the Quest For Glory series next. QFG1 is my childhood and has a "modernized" version (no text entries) if you want to take a break from trying to find the correct words in a lexicon. (Although by the time QFG started, the lexicon was so improved that speedrunners are breaking the game by typing only a few letters per prompt in the original text based version)

Count me in as looking forward to King's Quest III. On one hand, the game makes a lot of steps forward for the series. It has a lot more story, its more focused, it doesn't just dump you in a field and ask you to solve random puzzles. Its the first game in the series that really feels like the King's Quest that comes later. On the other hand, boy does this game make some choices. Some absolutely wild choices.

The remake of the game that Sierra put out about 5 years later using their more advanced SCI game engine took the opportunity to give the player ways to bypass or at least better understand the more obscure puzzles of the original. The crashed spaceship actually has the survival kit and pieces of broken glass in the sand outside, with the glasa helpfully glittering in the sun to make it super obvious. It's made easier to force the spider droid to encounter Orat (the original game requires a very specific set of events to happen to make sure Orat is triggered inside the cave at the same time the spider is chasing you; the remake just spawns Orat in the cave all the time). The arcade Skimmer sequence can be skipped, as can the fruit machine in the Bar (through use of a magnet you can find back at the start of the game). While these quality of life changes don't really change the overall game, they do make some of it's more 'ambiguous' puzzles easier to figure out. It's still possible to go into the caverns without picking up the glass shard in this remake, but if you don't try to pick up the now super obvious glass pieces that literally sparkle for you, then it's more the player's own fault than in the original. 🤣

I had an interesting Space Quest walkthrough as a kid, it covered the first 3 games and was written as a play-by-play telling of the game by Roger Wilco. I dont know if it was an official guide or not, but I must have read that thing a hundred times back then. I remember having a very similar guide for Quest for Glory games, where the walkthrough was written as a sort of novel detailing the main character's travels through the games.

Yeah just watching the video, I couldn't help but feel like this was a real game. The first two King's Quest games were more like vague attempts at being a game, but they hadnt quite figured it out yet. You'd get plopped down in the middle of an entirely open area with no indication of what even is a puzzle. This one has what are almost like contained worlds with clear progression.

Space Janitor "Roger Wilco," is completely unlike the usual, studly/Rambo-like hero, who dies in an amusing variety of ways in the game.;) I played the VGA version, which has a number of things to find/use and an "autonav" for the surface skimmer. I felt somewhat triumphant after getting the Golden Mop. Then it was time for Space Quest 2... Roger, I think, is the distant ancestor of "Ryley Robinson" of "Subnautica," since he's the "Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief."

It seems almost serendipitous that this video released on the day of an unprecedented solar storm, with the Aurora Borealis faintly visibly in British skies. I could just about see it from the roof of my local this evening, and even in its subdued and muted form above an overly-luminous metropolis (even the edge of the London area is still blighted by light pollution from the capital), I was awed by its majesty. It wasn't quite like seeing the Milky Way from the heart of Zion National Park, but it was still a sight to behold. I wonder if Roger ever gets to see such colourful plasma storms in his adventures? He undoubtedly gets to marvel at the wonders of colourful beams disintegrating his body, but hopefully he'll get to mellow out as he watches the aurora. Probably while waiting too long in the area and getting eaten by a giant fuzzy tardigrade.
