Just found you on KZbin! I really enjoyed your show, funnily enough today whilst trying to sew in my tiny craft room the chaos that surround me finally made me so stressed I said enough!!! Two hours later and several trips to either the dustbin or to load stuff in my car for charity shops, my craft room isn't perfect but I feel so much more inclined to want to go in there and just relax and craft. You have a really calming voice and really liked the format of the show.

Hi Linda -- thanks so much for watching! Wow, what an awesome story! Isn't it great to get to the place where we let go of some things and it makes us feel so much more inspired and relaxed? I'm glad you are enjoying the show. :)

Kristine, thank you for giving such interesting information, unlike any other podcast I have seen. Wow, you do your homework. You get a 5-star and I will be reading your two book suggestions. At 56 I still have clutter but your information helped me. I started decluttering when we moved 3 years ago and working on more decluttering. I will be watching you while I knit I have got to see ALL your podcasts. Also, thank you for not making this like one long commercial.

Hi Dr. Kelly. I have watched a number of your videos and they are outstanding. I've now decided to start from the beginning and I thoroughly enjoyed this "intro" to your channel. I so wish I had you for a professor (I have a BS in psych with a minor in sociology and run clinical trials for medical devices and pharmaceuticals). I'd also love to have you as a knitting mentor! Instead, I will learn from you through this channel and soak up everything you discuss. You are an outstanding educator and a lovely person. Thank you!

Great episode! Yes, I am trying to make things simpler. I had started that goal at the beginning of the school year and have to keep reminding myself. One of our family goals is to clear the coffee table each night. That way we can start fresh the next day. Just simply putting things away and getting it out if we need it again the next day.
@EweUniversity7 жыл бұрын
Hi Britni -- thanks! :) I think that sounds great. I have been keeping my coffee table completely cleared off and love it. I know you have a little one, so that makes it a little more challenging. I agree, though, that it makes your day start fresh!

Hi, Kris! I'm just now watching this episode and I really enjoyed the format, very calming. About a two years ago, I read a book on margin and leaving white space in your life, both physically (as in scheduling) and mentally. It has resulted in much less stress. I had to create margin in watching knitting podcasts too. I do need to declutter. I know that just holding onto things because I might use it someday is an ineffectual use of my time and space. Looking forward to watching the next episode. Thanks so much!
@EweUniversity7 жыл бұрын
Hi Deanna! You are so right about everything you said. Those are very common reasons that people hold onto things that they don't need. I just needed to realize that was happening in my life and throw out that philosophy! I just dusted my house today and it took about 5 minutes because the major surfaces are all clear. :) I totally understand about the podcasts, too. I have had to cut way back the amount of time I spent on those. I catch up with my faves when I can. Thank you so much for watching this episode! :)

Thank you Kristine. I just started watching your podcast yesterday. I got interested when I red the title. How to make a sock blanket? Any way, this one just hit me and I just need to say that I use to have a very nice sewing room with my yarn stash and all. Well it was taken over and I have been so disorganized that I just don't know where to start. Yes, I have the plastic container and like you said they just get filled with more stuff. Well, to make it short you have just opened my eyes and started cleaning my fabric, yarn/ beads etc. It just brings me down to see all of my hobbies scattered and not having a place. I am catching up on your podcast and I am in love with your very thoughtful information and knowledge. Thank you, PilarK

Hello again! Well I have been inspired by you to really tackle my yarn stash! It truly confounded me because I can’t see to read labels etc. I purchased a new tool, the pen friend too, voice labeling system. I have gone through my stash and asked the question, “would I buy this yarn today ?“ Anything I did not believe I would ever knit up, I donated. It took me quite a while using my barcode reader and my Seeing AI app to identify and name yarns. They are now bagged and tagged with a Voice label that I recorded. They are in bins with labels that I have recorded. And each shelf has a hanging label that identifies what is in the bins above! I am now ready to start knitting and can actually find the yarn I’m looking for! Thank you for the inspiration!

Kris it is good to see you back! I try all the time to "unload" around here. I think it would not matter if I had a small house as opposed to this larger old house , I could still add things. It is not messy or cluttered but just feels like a lot at times. My other half is a collector. There's the hard part. I love K. Fassett fabrics. I have made much from them. You look great! Cheryl

Hi Cheryl -- thank you so much! We have a big old house, too, and, while it provides space for my craft/yarn and sewing rooms, I am looking forward to having a smaller house in the future. I know what you mean about the collector in your home -- that makes it challenging when we want to declutter. :)

O...M...G.... you just described my life. I have a loving husband and two loving teenage sons. I have been to the ER 20 plus times in two years thinking i am having a heart attack. I started knitting and loom working and getting into yarn and fibers and it calms me so much. I just get my first spinning wheel ( i can not spin, thought it was going to be so easy... i can't get the hang of it. My drop spindle is great though) Never planned on getting into yarn, fibers ect. Can't explain it, my mind just went there on its own. Sounds weird, i know lol. My house is cluttered, not with yucky dirty stuff but clean, cluttered things. It DOES effect you. I am living proof. Sadly i have too much anxiety about keeping things decluttered that i fill up those "flat spaces" and all the clutter and bad anxiety feelings come back. Sorry to vent but i am so very glad i found your channel. I've been enjoying your videos and when i watched this one i was like "she's talking about me" 🤗

Hi Kris, loved your first podcast, and can't wait to see more. I always loved the informative audio podcasts and seeing you now as you chat about things is all the more enjoyable. At this time of year I'm always wanting to declutter, I actually started purging things a few months ago, asking myself the question 'do I really love this', does it bring me joy? It was after reading some of the Konmari book. I need to get back to it as I've still got way too much clutter in cupboards and on counter tops. Thanks for the inspiration. Hope you have a great week. xx

I also like having extra space in my surroundings. A few years ago we moved into a bigger house and my mother was concerned about furnishing and filling all the rooms. I told her that open space is a good thing. I came up with a mantra that she quotes to this day "Feel the urge to purge. Embrace the space."

Glad to find you here, Dr. Kelly. I too have been on my own personal simplification/decluttering journey. Do you know of a book called A YEAR TO CLEAR by Stephanie Bennett Vogt? I had collections of supplies for many genres of arts and crafts, and this book helped me start the process of identifying priorities, clearing, and creating space for true creativity. Thoroughly enjoyed your commentary on this subject. Thank you. ❤️

I like your theme, space. Hi, I just recently found your videos and am loving them all. I am a 'collector' of many things and am finding that as I am getting older (I'll be 59 this Nov) I realize that I need to 'de-stash'...and declutter! My small house is looking smaller everyday. My problem though is that I love so many different crafts and have long outgrown my craft room. I too, have many projects in the works and so wish I had time to work on more. I love the stitch markers that have space for a note...esp the idea to attach to project bags so you know whats in them. (I'm a true ' bag lady' in that area....lol I like the idea of taking all my yarn out to the porch to air out and in the process really taking stock of what I have and truly want to keep.....I might need a script for ativan to do that though....lol.....I'll let you know if I find the courage or not. Thanks again for all the videos.

Oh wow... KF fabrics are awesome... What a treasure for you! I once helped open, and worked in, a small Catholic bookstore... AND... I found that if Zi could place an item in a guest’s hands he/she would very likely buy it... I tend to clutter up the tables next to my corer if the couch...which is where I sit to knit or crochet..,,Ih..I periodically put everything away, but it creeps back out... I seem to need my special things close by... It’s really the only cluttered spot in my house... Although I regularly have to “do something” about my quilting:yarn room. 😊 I do function better when my space is at least neat..Even the stuff by my corner is neatly stacked.. mostly, anyway..and I admit to small piles of papers on my kitchen counter... 😊😊

As a psychology professor, maybe you can answer this question for me: I realized last semester while struggling with the reading assignments for my online classes that my comprehension and retention of the material improved dramatically if I knitted while I was reading. How and why does that happen?
@EweUniversity7 жыл бұрын
Hi Emily -- sorry, I just saw your comment so I didn't respond earlier. I did a video recently about knitting and mental health. You might be interested in checking that one out. I talked a lot about the research connecting knitting with stress reduction and other benefits. There's also some research on how things like knitting (as long as it is a well-learned and automatic skill) and doodling help with cognitive abilities (memory, attention, etc.). I may do a video on that research in the future. So definitely keep on knitting while learning! :)

I to have just today come across your videos! I am 55 and I to am at that stage in my life where I'm tried of all the stuff that's just sitting around.....every inch of space has something in it.....my issues with that are, although I hate the clutter I love my stuff and have a hard time parting with my clutter because most of it has been gifted to me by my children, family and friends which makes it even harder to part! Hello! I found your podcast recently, and I am learning so much! I have a quick question on a couple of the yarns in your stash: there's some gorgeous dark purple yarn on the left of the screen by your shoulder. There's some more beautiful purple yarn above your head. Would you please tell me the brands and colorways? Thank you so much!

Hello! I'm not sure exactly which yarns you are looking at, but I think the one by my shoulder is Queensland Collection Rustic Tweed in color #915. I think it might be discontinued, though. I think the one above my head is Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool in color #57. Thanks for watching. :)

i dont have as much yarn as you for sure. If i cannot think of something that i can make with the yarn, i dont buy it! I got some yarn redheart with love that i got on sale but i like to work with bernat blanket. I kept the redheart with love for about 6 months and after not touching it for 6 months i gave it to a friend who has made stuff for donating with it (hats gloves etc) so it did get used. Im not an unorganized person but i also found that if i dont organize it i will likely throw it away. I hate clutter but my husband just hates dirty cars! he takes care of outside i take care of inside it works!!

Hello! That's a good partnership -- divvy up organization outside and inside, and everyone is happy. :) Yes, I've destashed yarn that I had for a long time but just didn't find a use for. It's always a good feeling to give it to a recipient who will actually love it and use it. It's especially nice if they make charity items with it. Kudos! ♥

My problem with clutter is books and DVDs. I can't seem to get rid of any of them! I love my "how to" books and my Harry Potter Series. I have many "how to" books about sewing, knitting, crochet, cross stitch etc. How in the world do I get rid of those!?
@EweUniversity7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonia -- you don't have to purge everything. If you want to keep the books, then I say keep them. :) I used to have tons of knitting magazines that I was saving for the patterns. But then they started taking up so much space and I realized I could probably get the patterns (or something similar) on Ravelry, so I ended up donating all of those magazines to my local library. I feel like if purging something makes you feel anxious, then you should keep it. XO

I hate clutter. I think I am a minimalist and don't own anything that does not have an important function. And everything has to have a place in a cabinet or I will give them away. I wish I could keep my mind so clean and empty though. I don't think I will ever be able to do that. 😊
