OK, I want to establish I'm an atheist, but to all you people hating on religion, I get why you do it, I do, but I also get why people are bringing it to the space station, its comforting, to think something is watching out for you, especially when you're in space and the risk of something happening is immensely bigger. I mean why can't people just have their thing. Some atheists, some religious?

I wonder if taste buds are affected while in space. And if so by how much and what happens with salty or sweet foods.
@yagocrispim09 жыл бұрын
+katanaburner I listened to a podcast that the hosts interviewd Marcos Pontes, a brazillian astronaut who went to space. He said that almost no one can smell anything on space. I don't know the name of the organ itself, but the one responsible for smelling things doesn't work in space, for some reason, and since the taste buds are directly connected to it, they are affected. But i can't tell you how much, but i think you can taste something even though.
@bobs_9 жыл бұрын
+katanaburner Uh yes, tastebuds are changed particularly with spicy food, with the actual flavour of the spice being dulled quite a bit, if you watch some videos about space food, you'll notice most astronauts love their hot saucel.
@doublebubleguy129 жыл бұрын
+Yago Crispim It it because in micro gravity the mucous in the mucous membranes cant drain like they normally would and through surface tension stay in the sinuses much more often dulling the sense of smell but you still have a sense of smell if you clear your nose until mucous builds back up again.

I wonder why they can't use the cold temps of space to chill their foods. Some kind of a induction refrigeration system.
@michealconnelly24209 жыл бұрын
I assume a system in which you would expose to the vacuum of space would add weight. also the lack of pressure in space could lower the boiling point of water so much that any foods with liquid would expand with gas.
@sullivan35039 жыл бұрын
+Hagfan789 Space isn't cold. The only way to lose heat in space is through radiation. That means you have to wait for the natural black-body radiation of the cooling element to cool down the food. This would not be efficient with either space or time.
@Kyungshinyoon9 жыл бұрын
+Hagfan789 Space is not "cold", there are just so few particles so there is close to no heat transferred. You can't use the "cold temps of space"
@Hagfan7899 жыл бұрын
Kyungshinyoon Hey come on man..I did see the movie Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks..it looked pretty dang cold to me.. lol :)
@SuicidalLemonade8 жыл бұрын
+Hagfan789 convection and conduction don't work in a vacuum, so the food would only lose heat through radiation, which would mean it changed temperature very slowly.

Im not an expert but i do know they have varying degrees of medical supplys, from band aids, to defibrilators (or how ever you spell it ya know the thing that zaps ur heart to start it). @Zer0Commentary10 жыл бұрын
They do, it's the canned food. They send it to the ISS in pouches to reduce the weight.
@owydiu10 жыл бұрын
You're right. But I'd like a dedicated place in the store where they have all those NASA style foods. Kinda how like you have the lactose free food and the gluten free food in a certain place in the store. Zer0Commentary
@Zer0Commentary10 жыл бұрын
Oh okay, I get what you're saying. I know some stores sell dehydrated ice cream in a pouch for the novelty.
@lisareneejordan364010 жыл бұрын
Most of what they eat are basically the same thing as US military MREs, which can usually be found at most military surplus stores or online through amazon.com, thereadystore.com, campingsurvival.com, etc. Just Google "mre for sale" and you get plenty of options. The biggest difference between MREs and what NASA sends up is the calorie content. MREs pack in about 1200 calories per meal because soldiers in the field need around 3600 calories per day. That's way more than what the folks on the ISS need, so their meals are not as calorie-heavy. You can also find freeze-dried meal packs at most stores that sell camping and hiking supplies. both options are a bit expensive, but good to have on hand if you have limited refrigerator space/access. It's also smart to keep a couple in your vehicle along with the rest of your roadside emergency kit, especially if you are driving long distances in desolate areas with spotty cell phone service. I went on a 3-week road trip last summer through the US southwest & made sure my friend and I had two complete MREs and 2 gallons of water, along with the usual road flares, flashlight, jumper cables, tool kit, etc.

by "Left overs" did the commentator mean do the crew leave any non open food for other times or future crews ?
@ironscavenger9 жыл бұрын
+101southsideboy I think he meant the left overs from opened food containers of their thanksgiving feast. Because you can't preserve the food once it's opened you'll have to eat everything or throw it away.
@ragnkja9 жыл бұрын
+101southsideboy He likely meant opened containers, which they have to throw away. Unopened containers of bonus food, on the other hand, can stay behind if the crew member it was intended for hasn't eaten it by the time of departure. For example, Samantha Cristoforetti mentioned in one of her logbook posts that just before departure from the ISS, she showed Scott Kelly where he could find her leftover bonus food: plus.google.com/+SamanthaCristoforetti/posts/13xj6zxwZtx

@Speedj29 жыл бұрын
Thezuule1 this is a pretty common misconception, but because space is a vacuum it actually acts as a very poor heatsink. they actually have to worry a lot more about the astronauts overheating, than getting too cold. and they have dedicated cooling systems on the iss already but theyre focused on keeping it from getting too hot in there.

Those are cryogenic ones. Not suitable for food. They are so dependent on meals ready to eat that when something goes wrong with a resupply launch, Space X recent pad explosion, that leaves them hitting the pantry more than expected. I do know they have about six months of shelf stable foods on board but being cut off would be a mission scrub and return to earth abandoning the ISS. Progress will be going up this week with the arrival of Falcon 9 resupply this week.
