ABOUT THIS GAME
Summary:
In From the Depths you can build and take first-person command of battleships, planes, submarines, space ships, hot air balloons and more! The game is currently in alpha and contains a wide range of single player content including:
A creative mode allowing you to push your designs to the limit and ensure the total annihilation of your opponents.
A campaign waged over hundreds of islands against eight unique factions.
A Story Mode where you can (eventually!) play 15 missions as each of the eight factions - a fantastic mixture of strategy, design and wild battles! Defend your fleet against waves of enemy forces in a series of extremely tough challenges that unlock new components.
An expansive multiplayer and co-op element is planned for the coming months!
Key Features:
Design and build your fleet, fortresses and structures however you want. The alpha currently has over 400 unique components blocks, not including 29 different components for making missiles, torpedoes, depth charges and bombs.
The sky's the limit, you can equip your vehicle with - cannons, lasers, mines, bombs, missiles, torpedoes, propellers, rudders, jet engines, wings, hydrofoils, hot air balloons, anchors, fire control computers, blueprint spawners, repair bots, air pumps, automated control blocks and many, many more!
Realistic physics - every block destroyed or added affects the vehicle's functionality, physics and control. Drag, inertia tensors, buoyancy and sealed compartments are all updated based on the design of your vehicle and the damage sustained.

Customisable Components:
The customisable components in From the Depths allow a unique level of engineering customisation:
- Design custom missiles, bombs, depth charges and torpedoes by combining various warheads types, fuse types, IR seekers, laser beam riders, laser designators, thrusters, navigation algorithms, fuel pods, sonar seekers, buoyancy compartments and propellers, to deliver a truly bespoke weapon.
- Design custom cannons by combining four different barrel types and lengths with autoloaders, warhead types, ammo boxes and auxiliary components to create everything from AA cannons to howitzers.
- Design custom AI by combing an AI mainframe with 'AI cards' slotted into motherboard blocks. Add radar detection, laser detection and tracking and local weapon controllers to give partial or full control to AI. Create anything from a fully AI controlled aircraft carrier to a battery powered drone.
- Design custom engines using crank shafts, cylinders, carburetors, super chargers, exhausts and fuel injectors. Electric engines, generators and chargers are also available for backup power supplies and drones.
- Similar systems exist for the creation of anti-vehicle and anti-missile lasers, as well as drills that can cut even the largest of battleships in half.

Tip: Using thrust vectoring with spin blocks can save a lot of material on ion thrusters by allowing a single thruster to do the job of several stationary thrusters.

building 40K ships is nearly impossible in from the depths Necron and Chaos ships in particular as they'd require something such as a a 1m thick 20m long triangle of armor and rounded bits are pure insanity as well

Up to around 1000m you can still use regular planes to some extent. Atmospheric propulsion doesn't suddenly stop working at 600ish metres

fun fact: sails work in space, in fact they work very well in space, and are a great option for an adventure mode craft that wants 140m/s on the cheap

It's literally easier to make a space craft than it is an air craft. Hell, I often have to tweak my aircraft a bunch so that they don't go to space right away. Could tell the AI that it's max altitude is 500 and it still usually ends up at 2k or more. Honestly wish they would fix how physics is handled by smaller craft. It seems unless you build something above 100-200 blocks, the game engine will send it to the stratosphere or it will be incredibly unstable.

been trying to make a decent looking one for a long while the AI can't handle space travel due to inertia and my ships always end up looking like boxes....extremely well armored boxes that can take a monstruous hammering..but they look like shit

i was thinking on a series idea for you, a "How to Bust" series where you teach us how to counter different weapons and attack types like "How to Bust: HESH" or How to Bust: EMP attacks how to bust missiles, cluster missiles how to bust Robbaz Daka, well you get the idea

the answer to that is two fold: be really, really fast. also be either a sub or a spaceship. I builb a really heavy sub, so heavy it subs around the ocean floor on wheels. its thickly armored and spams pedos and underwater guns at things above. it also goes 200m/s. really it bounces around the ocean floor. beached itself too, once. right into a shipyard. torpedoes do not go far on land.

“You need something stronger than ion thrusters for heavy craft” Meanwhile I’m off not caring about things like costs and made a 66K block spaceship with the whole bottom surface covered in ion thrusters protected by heavy armor…

What should really be a solution to this wobbliness instead of everyone having to either deal with it or get familiar with PIDs, would be to make the game's default control loop into a PID with sane default values, instead of whatever this dumb default behaviour is called. Then using PID blocks you can fine tune from the default settings if there's a bit of dynamic oscillation left or if the response isn't to your liking. I feel like this is just another difficulty needlessly thrown into players' face. Also, default PID settings are absolutely inadequate for most uses which doesn't help learning from them.

The problem with the idea of a 'sane' PID default is that the same values will behave differently on different crafts. However, I agree that they can be difficult to pick up.

@@erslippers3805 For sure different crafts will need different tuning, but I think the default D-term should still be lower than it currently is. Too low of a D-term means a bit of oscillation, too high and you get crazy oscillation ; the former is much less of a hinderance really.

So I had the design concept of turning my Late Ww2-Post Cold War craft into spaceships by retrofitting them... It turned into a Battleship with a block of Ion Thrusters underneath them.

I havent tested it myself but i know a couple years ago i made a space "Plane" that was entirely propelled by sails. It was just as weird as it sounds. But hey solar sails are a thing so if anyone asks thats what it was. Honestly it was more of a space kite than a plane...that sounds pretty cool in my opinion.

800m? Most of my dedi-blade craft pop up to around 1600-2200m and hang out in that range. Sadly still well in the range of most cram, though they have a hard time tracking them. Any type of AA, on the other hand, turns them into swiss cheese pretty quickly. Haven't tested them against lasers yet, but as they can shoot 5km, I expect they will turn them into swiss cheese also. Laser designators are great. Would love making a craft that goes past 6km up to be out of detection range and drop guided bombs onto everything while being outside detection range.

I wonder if a vehicle in space can share resources with a vehicle on the surface. If you can, then a bomber spacecraft, cargo hauler would be a fast ship with RTGs that can quickly supply your fleets while relatively safe. Even though that think spacecraft make it too easy can't argue with a space freighter.

Hey Border, little question again: it is possible to set the target altitude e.g. in an AI Breadboard with a constant. Would it be possible to somehow set it by players input e.g. the pitch up/down in the vehicle controler if it would be possible to change the target altitude of the craft by that given input. (Main idea for a sub in adventure mode for more manuel control) Thanks in advance :)

I've found space vehicles are stupidly easy. Ion Jets pushing down, but placed high on the hull. You want the craft hanging off your lift devices, not balanced on them. Too wide they are very stable, but don't turn, too tall they wierdly get really happy about barrel rolls even if the pure physics say it should be stable. Also ALL THE ION JETS on the back helps get them into space. Again, going wide on your thrusters make it not turn. Peak difficulty is balancing the lift fore/aft on the center of mass, but even then you got a pretty big margin given that your pitch control can be mostly or entirely pushing the craft up thus helping keep it in space. Sadly, I've found space battleships easier than submarines. Mostly because the craft isn't affected by anything, and there is nothing to worry about running into. Also even on the 2019 settings, dediblades will get you to 700M. I don't bother on stuff thats 800M or higher. Don't even have to skimp on armor, can layer on plenty of normal metal over wood spall liner and then an inner armored core.

@@BorderWise12 This is mainly for fun and not practical at all. But I was wonder whether you could make a multistage rocket with boosters and such lmao. Maybe you can? Like make the first stage the parent so it would still have the propolsion? I haven't tested this idea lol. But yeah, just wondering.

@@BorderWise12 Highly possible tbh XD I wish someday the devs would polish out the things that are problematic in space, like CRAMs trying to arc their shots even though they're in space, and a bunch of minor things like the world "edge" appearing if you go high enough XD. I wanna see someone make a complete space custom campaign, cause that would be awesome.

That tutorial would essentially be: have all your thrusters in the right places and mess with PID settings until your craft is stable. 🤷‍♀️

steam jets work very very well in space, I built the Scarlet Dawn's new space interceptor with a cluster of 9 steam jets that allow it to get to about 260 m/s. edit: whoops commented before the end of the video
