Okay, Chip, hear me out. In theory, you can survive a re-entry at 3,500 m/s if you cut through the Earth's atmosphere with a minimum height of around 17-20 km above the ground. That can save you a lot of fuel. You also can use this trick with Venus. (It is even more helpful there, if you cover your rocket with heat shields, though it may require another calculations, but basically, most of the times you are able to survive without changing your velocity after transfer) Give it a shot. Note: if your trajectory says you're going to escape Earth's SoI, (before re-entry) don't worry, it is intended. If it still as it is after the re-entry, well, you screwed up.
