NASA - Starliner Crew - Earth to Space Call - Butch Wilmore & Suni Williams - July 10, 2024

Media are invited to hear from NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test astronauts discussing their mission during an Earth to space call at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC, 17:00 CEST), Wednesday, July 10.
NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will participate in the news conference from aboard the International Space Station in low Earth orbit.
Wilmore and Williams have been living and working aboard the station since docking on June 6, contributing to the expedition crew’s research and maintenance activities, while helping ground teams collect critical data for long-duration Starliner flights to the orbiting complex.

Thanks for the stream, Space Affairs. That crew are doing their best for Boeing, and for the whole project. The issues will be corrected, in due time, and I hope that a good return to the ground is effected. They still haven't announced a definite date for that, so they are still trying to fix things for minimum risk to the astronauts.

They have to return at the latest by August. They need min. one free docking port. CRS-21 is planned for August 3, and SpaceX Crew-9 later in August.

Thanks p, Space Affairs. I hope that the astronauts come home safely. They're too still haven't announced a date for their return, which means that Boeing are still working to fix or circumvent the faults, in order to minimise risk to that very experienced crew. That's a positive, because they are still confident that the mission can be completed safely.

Indeed. As Buch Wilmore mentioned, there is not one space mission in which not an issue occurred. They are trained well, but you can test a spacecraft mostly only under real conditions, and not only in the simulators. That is the reason, why SpaceX is so successful. They build things, put it on the pad and let it fly. When it goes "boom", they know afterwards, why. So, they reduce a lot of time and budget by testing things under the real environment. I am eager to see when the crewed version will come to life, wondering about how they test this in a vacuum, because a vacuum chamber in this size is not available. But, SpaceX would not be SpaceX if they would not have a solution. Boeing is different in development, and what most people do not reflect on is, that the Starliner is to 100% a new spacecraft. And before crews will get regularly up and down, it has to be tested to make it safe as it is possible, a risk always remains. Because of that, it is called "Space Science or Rocket Science", and not engineering. I think, they will stay the whole July. In August, they have to leave, because CRS-21 (Cargo Dragon) is scheduled for August 3 (at the moment) and they need a free docking port. ISS-Crew 9 is also planned to go up to the ISS more likely late August. So, Starliner has to come back to home in that time, because the International Docking Port only has 2 ports, and you can't use with any spacecraft to any time each of them, this has to do with orbital dynamics and times. So, let's see and stay confident. Butch and Suni do have thousands of people behind them, and they will make sure that they can come home safe.

@@Space-Affairs Thanks for your reply. I think we're both reading from the same page. The Soviet Union, and now Russia, China, India and Japan all use similar methods. 'Design it, build it, test it, break it, build it again, until it works.' In the long run it's the safest option, and us probably the lowest cost too. I sometimes deride Boeing for their inefficiency and their high costs, but they're not entirely stupid. I respect their openness and their expertise. Unfortunately, the quality control deficiencies with their airliners is reflecting badly upon their whole organisation. That's unfair in some ways, because their space divisions are pretty much separate companies to their aircraft divisions.

Why the uncontrolled hair? To convey the look of space? Yet in such an environment, There should be a streamline like our submarines have underwater, forgive me but it looks like such a mess of wires (and hair)and not the interior of a Space Craft. Fairly CGI to me, but perhaps I am wrong.
