seems like the practice of the half notes (over and over) will create the automatic recognition of the target notes, so that no matter what you play as grace notes (my word) you automatically know [ I need a target note now]. It might take a bit of practice, but when I get to the "Now where" part of an improv. it would be a great feeling to know where.

The problem with adult learning is we don't want to practice R,3,5,7 on beats 1&3, we want to play the song like Parker or Breau or Martino. Where a child can become fascinated with scales, dyads, triads, tritones with unusual roots, or even chord tone half notes. So a properly taught teenager could become a fearsome thing. I anyone reading this doubts what I say. look up some video from Berkeley Music's fingerstyle guitar department.

Those are called slash chords. What that means is, in your example, C maj triad over a D bass note. Second letter is always the bass note, first letter the chord. Hope that helps.
