High temperature steam distillation would be used to separate water from sewage and the equipment wouldn't be thermally insulated much in a P.O.S.flying port a john in space. The hot interior isn't ridiculous at all. We can thermally control all of our interiors in modern times but don't always do so in industrial settings to save on the resources.

Agreed, the most we can do in the bus shop is ether open the doors a hair to bring a breeze in and also keep the glare of the sun off the concrete at bay, but then you get the radiating heat of the sun on the garage doors just turning to a conventional oven. Sometimes we turn on the exhaust system to provide some sort of draft and draw heat out (best logic for that is “heat rises, let’s suck it out”) comfort takes second consideration after utility, I’m sure the crew was taking electrolyte tablets and keeping their hydration in check, which is what we do when it’s hot.
@JackVermicelli5 жыл бұрын
But in Earth industry, you can just not do anything, and the ambient temperature will be uncomfortable but survivable, while in space you'd have to always be running temperature control anyway just to keep a ship survivable.

Seeing these old civilian ships that had some military hardware slapped on and pressed into service is always cool, and I wish we'd seen more of this in the show. Why not have a couple of these old retrofits to escort the civilian fleet while the Galactica engages the enemy? Or even act as a flanking or ambushing force. Seems like with so few people and a decent number of ships, converting a couple seems like it would have been feasible.

@derpimusmaximus88156 жыл бұрын
My take on why(from a production standpoint) it's it hot in the shitbucket - I mean, Demetrius - is that it helps sell the crew getting so much more irritable. There's not many of them, there's literally no way for them to go somewhere to cool off(metaphorically or literally). It boosts the claustrophobic atmosphere. In-universe, it's possible it's environmental systems are a bit iffy because, being a 'spare' poop tanker, it's had parts salvaged for use in ships that are more valued within the fleet, so it's engines are less efficient, generating more waste heat, and with an impaired ability to sink the heat anywhere.
@herculeholmes5046 жыл бұрын
I agree- and the environmental controls would not be a high priority to fix, and because heat = energy, they might be reluctant to waste it.
@Awol9916 жыл бұрын
As a poop carrier it probably did not have much crew. Just enough to fly it from load to unload point.
@Vulpine4076 жыл бұрын
These are all good points. Someone may be tempted to argue that space (unless you're REALLY close to a sun) is the ultimate heat-sink. And that therefore the problem should be heating the ship, not cooling it. The problem with this thought is that it does not take the mechanics of thermal radiation (transfer of heat -not gamma, x or other dangerous radiation) into account. There's a lot of discussion at the NASA forums about how a starship (or just an in-system ship) would shed heat if it was powered by some reactor (fission, fusion, chemical, what-have-you) -not to mention all the other systems on the ship that would generate heat (electronics, motors, etc.) The common thought is that such a ship would require huge radiator fins that would allow the ship to bleed off excess heat into space. The Demetrius certainly looks like it has some small details on the hull that could represent such a function, but certainly not enough to easily cool all the heat the ship generates. As others have pointed out, being a low-end commercial ship not meant to carry large crews for extended periods would definitely be a major contributor to the ship's environment being less than comfy.
@herculeholmes5046 жыл бұрын
Thinking about it, being close to a Planet or asteroid could also make space warm; outside of the Earth's atmosphere the temperature is a rather mild 10c.
@DeusExAstra6 жыл бұрын
@@herculeholmes504 The temperature of space is irrelevant because it's an almost perfect vacuum. So, for any ship in space, other than any heat radiated away through EM radiation, space would act as an insulator, and any heat in the ship stays in the ship unless you can figure out a way to get it out... which is not an easy task.

The Mail Courier. The unsung hero of the Fleet, it's sole pilot makes sure the mail get's to where it needs to go. As time went on however, to add excitement to their life, they opted to keep delivering mail even during combat. Unbeknownst to anyone including themselves, this resulted in them becoming the best pilot in the fleet, making their rust-bucket civilian transport dance like a Viper through enemy fire. There should be little dialogue, to a general background of classical music during combat scenes, and some obscene death metal during the non-combat runs. Their piloting also changes between combat and non-combat. Non-combat, they take all kinds of unneeded risks like braking just past the last moment so the docking collar has to do some of the work at bringing the ship to a stop, and during combat they are the avatar of grace and perfectly executed docking, with only three functional thrusters out of 12 and the main engines down.

I don't know that it's so ridiculous that it's hot in the Demetrius. Is it not possible that the reactor produces a lot of heat, and the cooling systems or shielding are sub-par? It seems unlikely they'd have the resources or inclination to repair a non-vital system

I never would have thought a "sewage freighter" would be anything other than a joke, but it does make some sense that in a heavily space-going civilization, not every ship would be expected to be fully self-sufficient. There could be a lot of dedicated designs for in-space refuel/restock/waste-recycling.
@basedeltazero7146 жыл бұрын
"but it does make some sense that in a heavily space-going civilization, not every ship would be expected to be fully self-sufficient." Perhaps so... but presumably, such vessels could dock to a station/ground platform? I mean, we hook RVs up to stationary sewage lines, we don't build a seperate poo truck to follow them. And why would anyone put an FTL drive on a glorified septic tank anyways? Realistically, I'd think such a ship could exist, but it's job would probably be a bit more complicated than 'sewage'. Something that the served ships can't just handle themselves... like a vessel to transport nuclear waste or other hazardous materials from deep space stations for recycling/safe disposal.
@chriss20316 жыл бұрын
You want a sewage freighter for proper processing for the simple reason that while you may can sterilize your leftovers on your own ship you aint gonna make food out of it yourself. That stuff and the gasses they produce need to go somewhere. And simply jettison that stuff into space is a waste of resources if you are in space with no access to a planet.

While its details are somewhat limited, I can't help but point out humanity's most heavily armed stealth vessel we are aware of within the Halo universe (seeing as there are even less specifics about their stealth cruiser Point of No Return). Such a blending of capabilities always has great appeal to me, and the actions undertaken by it fit logically inside the pros and cons of utilizing the design. @ala55305 жыл бұрын
Excellent content. As a possible reason the ship is too hot/humid: a sewage ship is likely not intended for long solo missions. As such its consumables budget is going to be very tight on a long distance recon cruise of indefinite duration. Given that dumping excess heat is a bigger problem in space than heating the ship, and that every bit of power they use is dependent on an ever-dwindling fuel supply, cutting power usage spent bringing the ship's internal temperature down will give a far from insignificant reduction in consumption, thus expanding their range-until-resupply margin considerably. Add to that the fact that they've added a significant amount of extra equipment (which will consume power and thus fuel while simultaneously adding to the waste heat problem directly, although if the original sewage processing gear is turned off/removed or running at a significantly stepped down level, they could still be making a net gain in power efficiency), and probably upped the crew size beyond the designed complement (possibly beyond the book values that the life support and environmental systems are rated for), and may have had it running for longer than expected (probably since New Caprica, although they may have docked/landed since then to do the refit/conversion, potentially all the way back to before the attack on the Colonies), and it's hardly surprising the ship's hotter than is comfortable. Oh, as a recommendation for underrated utility ships in sci-fi: might I suggest the *Toybox* from PLANETES. Hard SF setting, doing garbage runs in LEO through GEO to prevent Kessler syndrome from putting to kibosh on space travel and exploration.

It is outstanding to see it implemented into a TV show that hopefully gets non-military personnel to think about how military personnel are forced to adapt.

With a ship that has been completely repurposed with minimal resources for refitting it does not seem strange that the ventilation may not provide equal air exchange to all compartments. Particularly if some of the compartments the crew are now living in were originally only intended to be cargo spaces.It's possible that to keep areas closer to the outer hull warm enough to sleep or relax in might result in areas in the core of the ship, where the control room is, to be a few degrees warmer than what would be considered optimal comfort.

According to a recent answer on Quora, even on day-to-day operations on a current-day carrier, pilots fly whatever plane has completed maintenance and is cleared to fly, which isn't necessarily the one with the pilot's name on it. :) Not saying the situation wouldn't be more dire in the BsG scenario. One point on your "environmental controls" argument: It's likely that the Demetrius' environmental controls are not functioning entirely properly, and it could be that the ship's reactor could have been increased in output to provide more power for the CIC equipment etc. thus creating more internal heat that might be difficult to dissipate. Just a thought on why the interior of the Demetrius could be so hot even with environmental controls.

It is also safe to assume the Demetrius is one of the few ships that has a tougher hull than other civilian in the Galactica fleet due to it's purpose. Add in that it operates independently, it is impervious to cyber attacks which makes the Demetrius a perfect full ship to carry on scout missions extending Viper and Raptor range as a little carrier.

I just love the idea of the fleet having more sewage ships than it needed. To me, in addition to the fact that it means lots of people have died, it ALSO implies that quite a few of them survived the Fall, likely because they're sewage ships, and sewage ships are going to have FTLs, because who wants to spend time travelling sublight speeds with sewage?

I always wanted more 'lower decks' type stories on BSG. At one point I was interested in the gunners controlling those manual turrets on top of Galactica. This was one of the greatest scifi shows ever that seemed to get bogged down in the theological stuff rather than sticking with the main scifi premise. So many good character archs were lost or changed in S4 but that's another well trodden debate.

The environmental control could have been designed for a much smaller crew of the sewage ship. Maybe it cant keep up with the cooling required for a larger crew.

Regarding Helo’s constant shifting around in rank and authority, aside from plot his relationship with Athena probably factors in. Although she proved herself loyal to the people she loved among the Colonials more than her own people, that fact remains that she is a Cylon and her model had shot and almost killed Adama. It was likely subconscious but Adama would constantly be torn between his trust for Helo and the knowledge that he is sleeping with someone who has been the enemy before.

Potential reason for it being too hot. Maybe to save money the original ship was built with passive heating from the reactor instead of a proper climate control unit and when it was converted they uprated the reactor but forgot to/weren't able to modify the passive heating system. This means that the more powerful reactor produces more waste heat and hence makes the ship too hot.

D: and they put CIC equipment in me.... C9: OMG.... D: and it was hot in there for some reason LMAO!
@hyperdude1446 жыл бұрын
To speculate on the "environmental control" aspect I'd say that the ship is holding more people and equipment than it can handle. People and equipment produce heat which needs to be dispersed, but since space is an insulator, you can't do that easily. So the ship gets hot.

As another viewer pointed out in the comments, it's actually very difficult for spacecraft to reduce their overall temperature, as there is no gas in space for that heat to dissipate to. The only means for heat reduction in space is via the natural process of thermal radiation in the infrared spectrum. This process can be extremely slow, and could be a potential explanation for why the ship seems so hot. In addition, when you consider the fact that all cooling systems must, by the laws of thermodynamics, simply transfer heat from one area to another to cool it off, it would actually cause the total temperature of the ship to increase over time rather than decrease, thus potentially causing a long term heating issue.

Would've liked to get a closer look at the Zephyr. The habitat ring-ship that got blasted in the Ionian Nebula. I noticed that alot of ships in The Fleet are identical to the ones in the original fleet. The Zephyr however is one of those designed for this iteration along side Cloud-9, Colonial One and I'm pretty sure the Olympic Carrier. I got the impression that the Zephyr was a luxury liner. I remember a short clip of Geata leaving Galactica shoreleave or something The Pegasus comms officer, Hoshi, stops him in the corridor, passes some painkillers for his leg and kisses him goodbye. I thought she was one of the more beautiful graceful ships in the fleet that was totally out of its element for a voyage of this scale. I would've liked to see what strategic role, if any, it played in the fleet aside from being "The Other Cloud-9".

I always thought it would make sense for the Colonial Military to commandeer the best suited vessels and retrofit them as frigates or something, just so they had more options for defending the fleet. And then convert the starboard landing deck of the Galactica into a fabrication set-up, so they could manufacture replacement MkII Vipers. The Pegasus had fabrication facilities aboard her, so it should have been possible to fit go Galactica with similar. Come to think of it, during the Caprica II arc, the Pegasus, Galactica and the remaining Colonials should have been building new fighters by the score, and training pilots.

Temperature issues are probably to do with having to carry so much fuel for the raptors/vipers. While you could presumably store it in sufficiently scrubbed sewage tanks you’d have a bad time if your fuel was not temperature controlled properly. So any parts/power for regulating that would need to be prioritised.

I know I'm really late to this but this is my head canon for the reason everyone is sweating The metal sheets used were intended as warship armour, not for use on civilian vehicles and so the engines are working overtime, burning way hotter than ever intended and so, the environmental control systems literally cannot keep up with how hot it's getting.
