This is a size comparison by sheer east-west length of all the Italian medieval cathedrals I could rip from Google Earth. In space, of course. Yes, the ones at the end are not cathedrals but WHO CARES
By medieval cathedral, I mean a church built as a cathedral (bishop’s seat) in the sixteenth century or earlier, so some “Renaissance” buildings appear, but if it’s a total Baroque rebuild, I left it out. What I mean by Italy is basically modern Italy (but also Corsica), as medieval Italy makes the Holy Roman Empire look simple. It also had an absurd amount of bishops’ seats and thus cathedrals - nearly 300 - something I will publish a post about soon.
Yes, there’s no way you can read the captions in full on a first viewing, but it’s long enough as it is, so either watch it again, or drop me a Ko-fi for 5k renders of the whole set with the captions visible.

The backing music is me getting above my station and spending months with the score of Respighi’s Church Windows trying to play a version of the second movement. I had to cut out the whole major slow-section that essentially resolves the whole piece because it just didn’t work thematically with the video to basically have a big chilled-out bit near the end, so I put part of it in under the end card and if for some reason you want to hear it all, I put it up here: / saint-michael-archange...
If you want to listen to a version by proper musicians, I recommend the 2000 live recording by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic conducted by Petr Altrichter and performed in the city’s Anglican Cathedral with its organ, available on Spotify and other streaming services.
The Imperial craft that appear (actually to scale, by the way, I put them on the scaling platform and looked up their length on Wookiepedia) were made by www.artstation... and were downloaded, greebles and all, from sketchfab.com/.... Thanks Daniel!
