This film was one of the best films I have ever seen. It has me thinking about my life. Really touched on loneliness and dealing with yourself. I feel like the spider is in his mind and at the end he tried to end himself and got saved. This film really got me thinking.

Johan Renck's first actual feature, film and movie was with Maria, Bello and Jason Patric along with Rufus Sewell titled Downloading Nancy which went to Sundance in 2008 which I wrote in 1997 - Maria was a nominated for a best actress, independent spirit award in 2010 when the film finally was released… This was long before breaking bad or Chernobyl, and I believe the film still holds up as a period piece in the early days of the Internet based on the true story that captured my heart when I wrote the first draft… I encourage you to watch the film and consider giving it a special review, since it is not well known…

I have been enjoying Adam Sandler's Netflix movies of late (most recently Hustle) but I think maybe I will sit this one out.

This is a now well established sub-genre which began with ‘Solaris’ in the ‘70s and seeks to speak to that immersive aspect of loneliness and space travel.

Came for a movie about space, got a movie about a nagging, judgemental spider. This movie sucked out loud.

A handful of scenes should’ve been way more impactful. I liked every aspect of a character study they started to explore. Just didn’t really drive it home.

It had some touching moments, but overall didn’t do it for me. It did kind of make me want to read the book/source material

This one was definitely a disappointment for me. I'm a big Sandler guy and love seeing whenever he takes on another dramatic role, but the pacing and the execution of the film really prevented me from becoming invested in his character. Outside of Dune, 2024 hasn't been off to a great start. Nice review, Elliott!

So many good point. Agreed agreed. Maybe because I grew up on Apollo 13, I couldn’t get over the mix of realistic things and totally unrealistic. They can send a man to Jupiter and talk on cell phones knowing space but his ship is a retro looking piece of crap? And I agree, the relationship lacked depth and made the whole relationship boring to

I was gonna say "well it is an Adam Sandler movie" but thank God it not. But wow, i was hoping this would be a good one cause I really liked him in dramatic roles more than his "comedy" roles.

I wanted more from this movie. It tried to be deep but it was silly and boring. The Martian, Moon, mission to Mars, and Europa Report did this better. The misson could have been completed safely and cheaply by sending a probe. Netflix didn't learn from a long list bad space movies they produce.

This film diverts from prevailing trends in the sci-fi genre. (And that is why it is so great!) It is unfortunate that most critics failed to recognize the value in both depth and artistic execution. For an average American viewer, this film will fall flat for obvious reasons (arbitrary complaisance with other space-oriented films, laziness, pop-culture numbness, and, needless to say, stupidity.) The austere approach by Johan Renck was a brave choice that paid off. The cultural references are specific and bring another dimension to the film. However, that might be hidden from most of the audience, making it more difficult to connect with the characters. The viewer has to do the "work." This was a considered, consistent, and highly successful effort to portray and address a myriad of pressing issues reaching beyond the movie's plot. If you want to avoid investing time to analyze and think about the content, if you need to be presented with all the answers, don't watch the movie (it will be wasted on you)! This is not a space film but a visual metaphor that carves its own path. P.S. Adam Sandler was a strange choice, but he showed that he is a versatile actor who can carry an emotionally charged character - an excellent performance, as it should be.

Glad you enjoyed it but a lot of your remarks are very demeaning and misguided. I can’t stand when people Iike something and when others don’t, people like you go straight to “they don’t get it excuse” while in reality, people can just not connect with a story or think it’s missing elements that speak to their personal sensibilities.

You made excellent points, no doubt. However, I find it frustrating that opinions conform to "averageness" easily. (I know you can do better.) Demanding? Yes! Art is demanding...on many levels. It is well documented that the lack of intellectual investment results in "lesser" alternatives. That is why most people will choose to watch "E.T." before "Stalker", buy Lazy Boy before Eames Lounge Chair, admire Jeff Koons before Richard Serra, and know Andy Warhol before Sol LeWitt. I commend Johan Renck for the brave choices he made with this project (and there are so many to point out). I am confident that, from his perspective, his film makes a bigger statement that most people will fail to recognize. Misguided? Perhaps. Didn't I hear that before? I am sorry that we (using the term "we" broadly for a reason) have reduced cinema to entertainment. No, this film is not for everyone, and that is ok.

What a waste of Space this Spaceman movie is. Very dreary movie, so they decided to try make it more interesting by having a spaceman have Hallucinations of a Giant spider, that annoyingly kept calling him Skinny Human, Skinny Human, throughout the movie.
