To me this wad a very deep movie, I actually enjoyed it. Was very slow and sometimes felt small, but...I really felt something with this, very sombre and makes you think of how you use your time with loved ones and peope you care about. The spider was haunting yet comforting. I don't know how I feel about this movies to be honest.

The way you talk about it is relatable, but that's the only thing gluing this thing together. It wants to pull at people's heart strings so badly, I could have gotten that with x amount of Disney movies from the past. It offers nothing new to me sorry to bash your sentiment. I really wanted to like this

@@DanielDay-dv8uw no I can see where you are coming from completely, maybe its because I watched it during drinking a full bottle of red lol. The parts I thought were deep was the feeling of being isolated and alone, with only your thoughts to keep you company. I liked the alien, I like the thought of a higher intelligence sharing parts of there being and vision of the world and then a human interpreting it, the alien as the interlect and the human has emotions. The alien dieing or the ending being sad isn't why I thought it was deep, I don't think that was a big part of the overall message. To me it was what leads to them answering questions about what's important.... I don't know lol I just liked it, but at the same time do understand where you are coming from.

He becomes really attached to the spider ironically no longer finding comfort in his loneliness and sense of detachment. He starts to fear losing him which we can relate to how he begins to feel about his wife. The movie has a similar message to ‘everything everywhere all at once’ I also find it interesting that the spider becomes disappointed in him once he finishes his psychoanalysis, saying his interest in him has expired. I really thought it would take a turn from there revealing some sort of ulterior motive within Hanus! They imply a lot about the spiders origin and knowledge base.

Comparing this movie to interstellar or as astra is mute. The fact that his wife is an after thought is the point of the struggle he’s coming to a grip with. The movie its self is what some called boring but really is a slow realization of his feeling while not just shoving them down your throat. I think more movies should follow this blueprint of leading the viewer to the point instead of telling you all the answers because then it is in opposition to how real emotions are felt. Great movie. Rotten tomatoes suck my giant space spider tentacles

This movie has been an interesting turning point in my life. It spoke to me and subsequently researching what everyone else thought of it, I’m now convinced that any medium of art should never be interpreted based on the majority opinion but rather how you yourself felt about the work alone. I don’t mind that so many of you hated it - I personally loved it and think it has it’s place among those who heard the message beyond any of it’s shortcomings.

I know I'm kind of late but I needed to share my thoughts on this: I loved this movie so much. Spaceman is not a movie about action or story, it's a movie about reflection, healing, forgiveness and most of all emotions: Love, loneliness, pain, regret, fear, curiosity and hope. I have never felt so touched and understood by a movie like Spaceman because it deals with so many issues that we struggle with mentally. It teaches us that we may never be satisfied with what we have, that we want to have what is always out of our reach and what can heal us, might be just right in front of us. We just have to recognise it. Spaceman explores what it means to be human. In my opinion it's an 10/10

Got to see this in theaters and was not dissapointed. I thought the movie was stunning. And while I agree with you that the story with his wife feels like an afterthought, that almost feels like the point. That’s how he sees her for a majority of the film so why should we see her differently. It’s only at the end we see her more when things change for him.

Most of the negative reviews seem to be from people who don't really appear to understand what this film was really about or intending to evoke in the viewer. If you're not someone who's done a whole lot of soul searching/therapy/etc etc then I can understand why someone would find this film to be a let down. But people saying "the spider wasn't creepy enough", or whatever, simply don't get it. I wouldn't necessarily give the film five stars either, but I cant help but feel it's gone over the head of a lot of people.

This film was beautiful. I came in to it blind, watching it alone without any expectations of action. This film resonates with some very human and deep feelings regarding existence, isolation, the melting of boundaries between two people and the profound connection one can feel with one self, others, and the universe. The soundtrack is transporting and feels perfect. It channels an atmosphere I felt in.... In The Mood for Love, the play scene of Beau is Afraid, and while I see the connections to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Interstellar I'd say Spaceman uses the similar themes for a very different effect and story. I see a lot of comments saying the film is boring. In the first half I noticed the film has a very similar tone to what you might feel at an art gallery watching a video or time based artwork which often are overly boring and un-compelling. This film had enough happening to carry interest throughout for me. The Carey Mulligan storyline is not otherworldly or particularly interesting but redeemingly feel necessary to explain Sandler's whole story. Her reactions and choices are believable and relatable. Is there something to read in the unexciting nature of her on-earth story compared to the spectacular story happening beyond up beyond Jupiter? Is our disinterest in her story compared to expanse of space relatable to the protagonists? What does this express about Sandler's character's choices and values by the end of the film? As someone who has survived the long distance phase of a relationship, this film resonates so much. Seeing a few of your reviews lately man, keen to see more!

I really liked this movie and decided to check out the reviews, big mistake, I was kind of floored when I saw all the negativity calling the film boring or some such. I think there are a few reasons why this film threw so many people off: 1. People have come to expect a lot of this genre with movies like interstellar and gravity they expect constant action and mindblowing effects but this is a very different type of movie, more of a slow crawl psychological thriller than a face paced sci-fi action-horror and the fact that it still has some elements from sci-fi horror it throws people off from what the movie is really suppose to be about. 2. Seeing a sentient space spider being surprisingly wholesome and peaceful is just too ridiculous for some viewers even if it is just as realistic as the prior, seeing a giant spider giving Jakub a hug for example, people just see the hilarity and strangeness of it like the term “skinny human” and never stop to think that these interactions would be somewhat realistic if this were to transpire in the real world… somehow but that’s what sci-fi has been doing for a while now, making ridiculous situations seem real and worrying 3. People think the message is too obvious and theres no deep messaging, but i saw it different, as a human when you are confronted with hard truths you don’t immediately gain clarity, sometimes you know what is right but you still deny and deflect, that’s how a lot of bad people are, they know they are bad but don’t change unless forced, and that’s what happens with our Jakub through Hanuš.

Lol maybe its because I'm Australian and we're just used to these critters... not that big of course but they still eat our birds... I also liked really like the term "skinny human" - as if it was a quirk of that species because they didn't know exactly how to communicate with humans (assuming the spider isn't a hallucination).

I felt this movie kept me watching. To see Adam Sandler in this role was new to me and he fitted it well. The idea of a scary spider which would terrify most people turns out to be a caring creature of much power and interests in humans is a new and good idea. To give the script more detail into the mission would add more complexity and maybe make the main story a little lost, so it was nice to keep on track with the main character and his issues.

Hiya! I’m just finally getting round to watching this and I’m not sure if this counts but my partner is really afraid of spiders. He has never been diagnosed with anything but we are Australian so they are everywhere. He actually cried at the end of the movie because he felt so much empathy towards the ancient creature. (trying to not to use spoilers lol) I was shocked we even finished the movie in the first place tbh. I think it’s great to keep telling yourself that it is a sci-fi fiction, it’s not obviously a real spider but, they have made the spider itself very realistic. You can see the hair’s on its jaws’s in most shots, so if you’re not into a giant, super detailed, hyper realistic, spider running around on screen then I wouldn’t watch. This creature actually convey’s to our main character pretty much at the start “do not be afraid” and that he will not hurt or consume our main character. Whether you believe this creatures “word” for the rest of the movie or not is up to you! This movie is very deep and if you’ve never experienced anything similar to the topics this movie is going to cover, I’m sorry to say, but you won’t enjoy it or get it and will come away disappointed. Hope that helps!

Intentional or not, the fact Mulligan's storyline isn't COMPLETELY fleshed out adds a lot of free space to fill in the blanks. This allowed me to relate in a deeper level, relating Sandler's character to myself and my own experiences. If everything was completely explained and developped I wouldnt have felt the same because it would've turned into a very specific scenario, no longer making me think about myself, but Sandler and Mulligan as ficticious characters. To myself, a male who let go people they deeply cared about and a father I have a hard time forgiving for past actions, it really made me face my own thoughts in many ways. I dunno about the objective quality of the movie, may be mid idk, but it really resonated with me.

The movie was too busy exploring what it means to be human in order to impress all these low budget movie enablers in the comments. I do not even know why they bothered having a spaceship at all..... everything impressive this movie did, could have been done by Conan the Barbarian stuck in a cave.

(SPOILERS) I am not really sure of what the real intention of this movie was. The relation between Jakob and his wife seemed to be a major plot but the execution was really bad. I felt nothing for the both of them, despite quite a lot of flash backs. It felt more like they wanted to show the deterioration of an astronaut's mind (with Hannoush being his imaginary friend) and the loneliness of an astronaut. I also didn't even learn much about Jakob and Hannoush so I couldn't really care much about them (and their shallow relationship) either. For example, why did Jakob become an astronaut? Why did he put it over his wife? Why was it so important to him? Is he trying to find the meaning of life? Like absolutely nothing. You can't really say that is intentional either because the movie is trying SO HARD to give us plot (with his wife, his dad, his childhood) but at the same time give nothing relatable because they go into absolutely no depth on these points. Just a dude in a spaceship confused what he thinks about his wife or why he gave up everything for his missions. For some reason they had a heap of scenes about mechanical issues on the ship that never really went anywhere I think they did quite well with the sadness and loneliness Jakob was feeling but it kind of felt lost with what I mentioned above... I don't know about this book, when it was written but from the movie that I watched, it felt like a story that AI would. It mashed up about 10 space movies with Charlottes Web and produced a big turd. So at the end, when Jakob and Hannoush are there in the purple cloud and Hannoush disappears... I cant' feel anything... If that is intentional, why have such a scene? Why have him get back to the ship to go back to his wife? Yes and the skinny human thing was sooooo old by the end. WOW.

I wanted more from this movie. It tried to be deep but it was silly and boring. The Martian, Moon, mission to Mars, and Europa Report did this better. The misson could have been completed safely and cheaply by sending a probe. Netflix didn't learn from a long list bad space movies they produce.

This movie felt like the writer had just read Project Hail Mary, and then had a few mushroom caps before writing this script. It was somewhat interesting until you realize it's all not real. He's just having a mental breakdown. This movie just really made me want to read Project hail Mary again. The movie is basically a long, drawn out examination of his failed marriage. Nothing at all with space or science or Syfy.

First of all, don’t compare this movie with interstellar. There is no comparison. Interstellar is a master piece. Anyways, for me, this was supposed to be a great movie, but 2 things really bothered me: first, the use of a spider to be the Hanus character. It breaks the adult theme of loneness and inserts the silliness of the fear of arachnids and insects (it could be worse… a cockroach); second, most mothers, me included, feel just the opposite when pregnant, we feel that we are complete and strong, and don’t need anyone else in the world. The problem starts when we deliver. But here I could be wrong, but It just appeared pushy to me, I couldn’t relate. Besides, no woman that is pregnant would prefer to go to a delivery home instead of being with your mother, my goodness… this was stupid! So, in my opinion, it would be more compelling if she wasn’t pregnant at all. So, at the end, I was disappointed, I really love the idea of this story, but my expectations were much higher. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The music was great, though… Max Richter could make most people sad with the death of a spider. So, the soundtrack saved the movie once again (amazing how some people don’t even recognize the value of music. It is a powerful tool to play with people’s mood).

If you didn’t like the movie you are probably in a chapter of your life where you can’t relate. If you did enjoy the movie, or if you felt the hurt he felt during the movie then maybe you are in that chapter of life in which this movie touches on. As for me, I felt this movie to my core. You may be so focused on goals or finish lines far in the distance yet the most important things in life might be right in front of you and you can’t even see it. As a skinny human, i approve that message. ❤

I actually thought this was an incredible film and could possibly be film of the year. Although the ending didn’t really give full closer and felt somewhat shallow. I haven’t seen a movie in ages with a good ending. The movies you compared it to I didn’t like as much as this one. The range of Sandlers acting is ridiculous and I had no expectations of enjoying it as much as I did while being able to take away some valuable life lessons in a world filled with distractions! The memory’s were vague but the message was clear.

I personally thought it was a great film. Yes, it's slow-paced...Yes, it's obviously not a huge budget film but I thought it was thought provoking. I expect many who aren't thinkers to be bored by this film but I personally really liked the way it navigated the emotions of the human experience from an unusual angle. I also enjoyed the subtle hints and what a possible future world could look like (Corporate influence, political landscape, etc.) I was impressed by it and applaud Sandler for doing another dramatic film.

I loved it. I was also really anticipating Spaceman, and this wasn’t exactly what I expected. However, damn near all of it worked for me. Sci-fi is always a draw for me, and I have loved just about every space movie to come out since 2010 (minus Ad Astra). Carey Mulligan was great as always, Dano & Sandler gave good performances too. This might be my #1 film to this point.
