A fantastic piece of advice my manager told me about, was about "Walking to work" when you WFH. You literally get up get properly dressed and leave the house and walk around the block(or walk around the apartment block etc) then, come back, and sit down and start work.
@Yesica19934 жыл бұрын
I've heard about the "getting dressed for work" thing, but not the walking thing. It does seem like a good idea! (But am I un-lazy enough to do it? Hm!)
@garrettk71664 жыл бұрын
@@Yesica1993 start small. A walk around the block takes a few minutes. I can attest that a morning walk feels absolutely fantastic. With the pandemic, I've realized that my mind doesn't function well unless I get a 30 minutes morning walk before I start work. And I'm really lazy

21:30 "I have a yoga mat. When the yoga mat is down, exercise is occurring.'' This was my outcome, as well, after watching Spaceship You. Gonna be honest: "Spaceship You" was one of the best & most impactful videos I've watched all year. I'm still putting it into practice. It's that powerful. Structure is vital.

As someone who has been working from home for the last 18 years out of a 33 year long career (so far), I find I have much greater productivity working from home as the "flow" can be simply amazing. If you do it long term you have to have a dedicated work space with no other distractions than the work device. If you need to change your mind / work item / topic then just walk through a doorway, doorways seem to do something amazing to your brain - ever noticed how you go to the kitchen and forget what you were there for?. At the start of the week you must create a work items list, and every day make a daily work list, these are the rod at your back to keep you focussed. The find some kind of music that gives the primate in your brain the distractions you need (we evolved from prey animals in a world to fight or flight), otherwise your brain will seek distractions - and that will start the procrastination cycle. Finally at the end of the day you need a physical separator, go for a walk, do exercise or a shower or something that tells your brain the day is over - otherwise work will keep buzzing around your head and you will feel work is always on and never done, and if you don't switch off it eats into the next day and your longer term productivity. Oh and maintain consistent hours, especially start time.

Even in a small space, having different chairs for different intentions can be helpful. Upright kitchen table style chair for working, slouchy camping chair (which can be folded for space) for Cortex and sudoku :) ALSO in a roommate situation, show the roommates Spaceship You and get everyone on board! Designate one of the shared spaces as physical activity space that everyone can rotate through, arrange furnishings to create a cozy nook for rec and zoom coffee dates, etc. Communicating with the people you live with has never been more important, including spouses and children. Set good schedules and good boundaries. The instances of everyone stepping on toes or annoying the heck out of each other will drop drastically.

Myke is wrong at 38:18. Creation Station is perfect because for anyone whose life is not bound by a "job" framework we need a space to do the hobbies, side hustles, study, ETC. it is the most inclusive term. I'm a stay at home mom and I don't have a "work" station. I 'work' in my kitchen, my office, literally every room of my home; so having a designated area for my desirable personal activities-writing, painting, reading mostly for me- is a great way to give me both focus and respite. And Grey's explanation of the broad value of our skills acquisition more than justifies the decision.

1:32:00 - Absolutely. It will eventually get to the point where a multi-monitor setup will be obsolete because it can be comfortably simulated instead. I would wager the possibility that it could replace, for some, the monitor entirely.

I don't know if there's a lot of people who have this option, but for me RGB lights have been really useful in separating my work desktop PC and my recreation desktop PC. If my keyboard backlight, mousepad and RAM are a dim red, I'm working, If they're a combination of blue and yellow, I'm resting

Wow, I'm late to the party here but here's my two cents. I am living out of a single bedroom right now (not even a closet a 12x 10 by 7 and a half room) I do actually go to work which is nice but other than that all one room. Entertainment is my computer on my desk on the other wall from my bed which is the sleeping area. Exersize area and work overlap due to the nature of the work but for bonus exersize I also have a matt I lay down. For creativity I grab my laptop and move myself around to different perspective in my room for different things if I'm programming I face the bed, crochet is the center of the room facing my desk but not at it. Writing is facing the wall with the door, even in a single small room I've found a way to create these spaces so hearing some people say they struggle with a one bedroom apartment sounds like a genuine wealthy person problem to me. Like man you have a living room to watch tv or connect your phone to it for youtube for relaxing or setting up a creative space a whole bedroom for sleep like you have a whole house probably with closets and stuff, trust me you can do it guys.

Advice on how to stay productive as a parent (and as a student) with small children during the quarantine? My condo is tiny and I'm starting to go a little mad with a 2-year-old running around
@anikaarrington56144 жыл бұрын
Even at 2yrs, though toddlers are their own ball of crazy, kids need structure. They need a schedule with play, sitting activities, regular meals, quiet/nap time, and screen time all spelled out. We have a chalk board but a fridge door, whiteboard, largish piece of paper will do and on it goes the schedule: wake up time, am routine, breakfast, outside play/walk/park, inside play, reading/sitting work/coloring, lunch, nap/quiet time, screen time, more outside play if possible, dinner, bath, story, bedtime (as an example, obv.). And establishing the "play area," eating area, nap time/bed time area is just as vital for kids as adults. It takes more fortitude to stick to it when the kids are screaming, but a solid two weeks of enforcement and kids will adapt and be happier for it. Also make sure that your work space and your sleep space are sacred spaces. Kids don't get to be in those spaces while you are working. It can also be helpful to decide what kind of work you are going to do during certain times of day. What is good to get done when the kids are napping v screen timed? What has to happen during normal daytime hours and what can get done at night? It can seem like the tiny people are running the show and have all the power, but you are the grown up. Figure out what works for you and stick to it. When you become predictable in your response, children will learn and respond. Be flexible when things go haywire, and give yourself permission to not have it all quite together. We have six kids here, ages 13 to 5. It's not easy, but consistency pays compound dividends!

What happened to Hello Internet? Normally every month - yet none since February, yet in the same time we have 4 Cortex / Cortexi/ Cortexes/ Cortexen, and 4 CPG Grey videos - which is an amazing feat in that time. My son and my nephew and I love HI, and have been listening for years - yet nothing- not even a goodbye.... I'd have thought that a large, very loyal audience would have created a great advertising opportunity for better rates and a guaranteed income...

15:25 Why should the work account be, where everything is? I don't need to stop myself from working on the recreation account, but I do need to stop myself from doing recreation on the work account. Why would you do it the other way around?
@sodernaut4 жыл бұрын
I don't think this a step-by-step guide. It's the way to think about it that is important. If you think you need to do it the other way around, then do it!
@glichking68124 жыл бұрын
I agree with the other guy, it's more separating work and play, to make your brain understand "this is work, this is play"
@garrettk71664 жыл бұрын
You're putting everything work-based on to the work account, and putting Recreation into a quarantined recreation account. No 'Recreation on the work account, no work on the quarantined recreation account. As others have said, creating separation between work & play.
