We’ve waited years for Star Citizen 4.0, and even now the update is not technically in our hands. But there are reasons to believe the next update is the vaunted server meshing update, and we may see it this summer according to a new roadmap update. But what’s included, and why is this the first major version change to Star Citizen since 2017. I’m joined by Star Citizen streamer Xerostate to discuss the update and its place in the journey to release.

I dont think we are there yet, we still got elevators not working, weird things happening at hangars. Like a friend of mine bought the 325a and when he lands and open the ship door, the ship is floating high in the sealing. Really weird. He gave up already. So yeah, lets wait another year before bring normies in.

About the medical ships and respawning. If you have two orgs fighting over jumptown and they both have a respawn ship parked at a distance. What is stopping one org from trying to kill the others med ship? Wouldn't that make the combat less of a war just on juptown but also a fight over respawns. People will have to protect the ship, wouldn't they? Plus, the ship would need to be able to keep the freshly spawned people equipped. All this sounds like a lot of people having jobs to do other than fps and stopping bombing runs. Sounds a lot more fun to me.

This is exactly like Planetside 2. You bring your spawn vehicle to an enemy base, and the battle is both taking the base and protecting your spawn, while the other faction is defending and trying to destroy your spawn. Really good gameplay.

I think you would treat that respawn ship as you would a king in a medieval battle you would protect it and as for the respawn injury it may not fix it depends on its tier. So best to have multi c8r to go to space to dock with larger ship with higher tier beds.

I think the respon change would add to the war style to fighting. A lot of logistics come into play with capturing a point away from natural spawns. Being forward deployed, orgs have to be good on being properly equipped with weapons, armor, personnel, & supplies. Balancing attacking, defending & bleeding out another orgs logistical resources with big org on org fights will flesh out these big fights for places.

There are so many things the could do for new/starting players in the landing zones: having “gang” hideouts to go do some fps (which requires you to get kitted out). Once the freight elevator comes in that will be a whole new world of possibilities. “Hey, here’s a ship if you repair it” so you have to buy components, call them into your hanger, use them to repair your ship. There’s a LOT they “could” do, it’s just if they realize or have the will to do it.

Eve online has these really great mission pages called the activities tab where it separates things into the different careers, mining, combat, exploration, industrial. And the mission includes where to go and how to do it at a base introductory level. And they're usually a series of missions that go into the deeper parts of whatever those careers are. So we could have something similar that isn't necessarily the tutorial, but it's a. If you're interested in getting into this particular gameplay style, you can sign up for these. And they're repeatable. So if something changes they can update the missions to reflect the new mechanics or if you've just not done it in a long time, you can refresh your memory.

I'll be very interested to see how they're able to push the AI forward with server meshing and what that allows. It's obvious that they're super limited right now and doing their best to squeeze out as much as possible out of the servers, often to their detriment. For me, if they get the AI / server performance sorted in 4.0, I'll be happy for additional gameplay to be added in .x patches after that.

DDO, LOTRO... You've got part of my MMO history there. It's extensive. ESO, SWTOR, PlanetSide 2, and Fallout 76 are all currently installed, along with the former two. :-) And that last one is an example of an MMO with buildable bases other players can interact with. My personal C.A.M.P. has creating stations open for public use, as an example.

@@TUROCK320 I'm not sure that solo play would prevent player created or initiated missions. I think when people think of player created missions PvP missions like bounties or similar are thought of first and may be the only thing they can think of but I don't think that needs to be the case. For example, someone could post a delivery mission of certain ship components from the purchase site to their home station. The contract doesn't need to force interaction between the players for the delivery to be completed successfully. How many players would prefer things to be delivered instead of having to go get everything from each location themselves?

And a contract system for "hired help" (somewhat have this already with refueling) (example on a Reclaimer) that does the math according to an agreed upon rate. Cargo is tagged with meta of owners (listing) and it cannot be materialized.. only sold. when sold, it goes to proper owners at agreed upon rate. Pirated cargo is lost. Lost / pirated cargo is taken out of pilot's bank or becomes debt owed.

Aside from mission giving, definitely high value passenger transport could get people back to the planetside. From planet to planet or planet to orbiting station will cause tons of traffic. Especially if high risk NPCs have to get out and wait for another transport at orbiting station. You'll be able to spy on what ship they get on for a hijack mission outside of security. Like Garindan from Star wars at Mos Eisley spotting the Millenium Falcon

IMO Different levels of gameplay will be linked to different systems. My idea of endgame, which really isn't, because there is none in SC, would be pushing out the Vanduul from one of their established systems and rebuilding it, starting new trade, bases etc. This will be the most rewarding in UEC, but will come at a high cost since you will need Keep/defend It. You will need really good rep. to get the best ships and players to complete the task. The more dangerous the system, the higher level of experience and reputation you will need.

Aaccess to the frontier of coding can't have a due date but a high price. Most people look to undestand the surface as a way to handle the uncertainty of shared space awareness (MMO). Access to this experience is so unique, imersive and familiar (to the players dreams and expectations). Star Citizen requires a shared space/time awareness to overcome it's current challenges.

MY SOLUTION TO RESPAWNING/D.O.A.S.M. If I were designing 'death of a space man', I'd implement as such: Lore: combine the sci-fi of Altered Carbon and The Sixth Day: (Altered Carbon's) 'Sleeves' that can be your new body upon respawn, but (like in The Sixth Day) they have the 'memories' that carry injury forward. Gameplay: 1. Your 'LOCAL' bodies/sleeves are finite, which can be stored in ships/medical vessels. This creates a logistical gameplay loop to consider, and players will be mindful of how many lives they have (as a pool; which affects group gameplay; and plays similar to many PvP gameplay modes on the market where 'game over' occurs when there are no more 'sleeves' to pull from in storage). Sleeves can have an economy built around them and their availability. 2. 'Memories' would 'mentally carry-over' Tier 1-3 injuries and how they affect your new body/sleeve (like in The Sixth Day), wherein your body is technically brand new, but there is a brain connection to your previous body that makes you think you still have a certain injury. This would be time based, and it can be affected by medical gameplay systems; like being able to do a physical rehab exercise to speed things up, or to apply some cognitive test to speed up the recovery of the injury carry-over. 3. When there are no more bodies/sleeves in local storage to pull from, you get redpawned where your DNA was stored (like is already in the game). IMO, this wouldn't tax the dev teams to much for implementation, and it fits within a reasonable space of science fiction that has logic, weight, and consequence to it. Let me know if yall agree, or if it doesn't make sense to how you'd prefer gameplay. ✌️

I think the game is intended to have a fluid gameplay through systems. Pyro will become a kind of hideout for unlaws and there will become the main workplace for bounty hunters while pirates will move to Stanton to find good loot and then retreat to Pyro with their treasure. When there is a thrid system I doubt the caravan of goods is passing through the gate of Pyro byt from the gate rhar comes from a safe system while Stanton will be less secure so pirates will have their chances there.

Great talk with a lot of insights. As far as respawns in a C8X at Jump Town, there will be people just looking for medical ships or vehicles to blow up. If you die, you will suddenly find yourself back at a landing zone. Plus, the logistics are not all that easy. You park 2 KM away and respawn, and then run all the way back to JT? That will get old quick. Medical vehicle respawns don't worry me at all. o7!

Richard Tyler talked about how all the game loops are going to be webbed together and become part of a meaningful mesh and the whole game’s success hinges on that IMO. Hopefully we will get to a place where players playing different game loops will have to start relying on each other and a necessity for player interaction on from an org level to the individual player level is created.

That's one of their considerations in designing each system: Because the complexity of each of these PARTS can compound as a WHOLE, they have to be careful how complex each part is. Otherwise, it becomes too difficult to ensure a consistently MANAGEABLE player experience.

@@LucidStrike what I mean is: Take a mining commodity for instance. You need this commodity in order to craft a rare military component from a blueprint (which you loose every time your ship explodes so you have to craft many as backup) but hopefully the shops won’t sell this commodity in great volume and we will have to rely on players either selling to a station that we can buy from or buying direct from players who like mining for it. Just one example of how a PVP org could build relationships with a mining org

I said this on SaltEMike’s stream and I will say it again here (not that I disagree with anything y’all said in this video but more directed towards the community in general), but I don’t think CIG should have to change how they want to present a new ship. Yes the timing was probably not the best due to the new change to respawn; however, people are just as guilty with reading into things as CIG is bad with time/timing itself. The “Nursa” ad was meant to be a corny in lore advertisement of the vehicle as if the vehicle was a new real vehicle back in the late 90s-early 2000s. The focus in the ad was supposed to be on the vehicle itself; not a mechanic that isn’t even mentioned in the video. Just like in real life the ad was meant to curve the truth about a product for the purpose of sales/hype. The video had nothing to do with the DOASM mechanic, yet people read so much into everything that they go immediately to the extreme. Look at the old way videogame announcements were to the public. The communities of games had to scratch the bottom of the barrel to get any kind of information out of a company about a new game. They even complained about lack of information many of times. Now we have a gaming Company that is so transparent (I would argue overly transparent) they provide almost weekly updates and info dumps on all things Star Citizen in the form of ISC and SCL. We have hours upon hours of information laid out in front of us, but as a community get into an uproar about one little in-game advertisement that has nothing to do with a future game mechanic. Why ignore the hours of information and listen to an ad about something completely different? We need to be better than this as a community. We need to get out of the scratching the barrel mentality that old game development has programmed us to think. Habits are hard to break so I’m not saying we all change over night. But we all need to just learn to trust CIG when it comes to changes like the respawn mechanic. We need to remember this game is still considered Alpha and literally everything is subject to change or be temporary fixes to make something better with current mechanics, until other mechanics come online.

(Regarding the nUrsa Med-Bed debacle) On the one hand, I agree with CIG being more consistent in their messaging across different mediums, but on the other hand, I really like in-fiction advertisements being just that: advertisements. Like, I'm not going to trust everything I hear on an ad in real life just like I'm not going to take an in-fiction ad in SC as gospel for game mechanics. I think Helldivers 2 is the perfect example of this. That game puts clearly-false information in front of the player as propaganda all the time. Granted, that's very clearly the tone of the game, and it's generally done in a tongue-in-cheek manner. However, I don't think the nUrsa commercial should be getting harped on as much as it is.

If you want more people to "hire other people as crew" we need some way of rating people and leaving reviews. For both the crew and the person putting out the hiring contract. If your a terrible boss and get a bad rating, people will know to avoid working for you. Or if your a crazed murder hobo who just wants to cause issues for what ever crew you join, I do not want you anywhere near my ship. Currently you roll the dice any time you try to get random people to crew up. I would just rather fly solo than risk having my time wasted by somebody else who decides to be a chaos gremlin because they're bored. The only crew I fly with currently are people I'm friends with irl and it'll stay that way until we have some way of weeding out the problem people before we group up.

The game ha its own rules and those can make it diificult to not be bothered. Pyro is not intended to be a comfortable place for easy travel. The PVE elements of the game can be used like a valve to control PVP. Let's say Pyro becomes a pirate base, the paradise for crime, there isn't law nor "police"" NPCs are just gangs that attack everybody but their friendlies, there isn't so many valuable goods in Pyro but the treasures that pirates steal, so pirates have to attack in Stanton using their foothold near Crusader, but stanton has law enforcement and NPC fleets patrol the area. Bounty Hunters have to sneak into Pyro to locate and capture the suspects which are hidding in Pyro and bring them back to where they are claimed, while mercenaries can join the local enforcement of Stanton to twart pirate activity, and pirates can join the gangs from Pyro to do assaults on Stanton commertial routes.

They might need to have the static mesh to collect data on server performance metrics with different player loads and server entity counts so they can create the rules defining when to split servers and how best to do so. Once they have sufficient information, if they can move to dynamic they will because it will allow them to focus on stability.

@@XeroStateLIVE I don't think you understand the ramifications of this. It was pretty common in Korean MMOs in the early 2000s to have player run shop stands in town, usually the town square; because an auction house requires its a own back end, and gets manipulated by bots. Ragnarok Online had a whole class designed around hunting items, trading goods and equipment, and using your cart to haul goods to remote locations and set up shop. A lot of modern MMOs would never allow this kind of class to work, due to the Auction house, Fast travel, and a desire to funnel individual players into a crafting/collecting ecosystem. I've started to go out of my way to challenge all forms of convenience, because of the way its dominates MMO design paradigms. I'm not against it in most cases.... but I've been hugely concerned with how its being used to justify streamlining out entire game systems just to allow a subset of players who hate doing things from having to do things. Modern MMOs are easier to play, but their also routinely shallow or have incredibly short half lives, because its now questionable if the game is engaging with a player, leading a player, or exploiting a player. I've never played WoW, but can easily recognize its influence in modern games. Having come of a long stint with the Guildwars games, and its distinct differences through its slow shift into becoming WoW-like, Home harvesting nodes used to be a fun rare reward that gives you a few extra materials per day. Now its considered mandatory to min/max gold production, and that all players should have it by default, since haves and have nots are "bad game design". And while we're at it, players also routinely demand a cash shop upgrade to auto harvest every day, so the whole process is totally passive. These cultural issues aren't limited to the AH. Fast travel, mounts, aggo mechanics, harvesting, drop rates, champ or elite tier mobs, PvP, PvE, group content, solo content, time gates.... you name most well known MMO conventions, and I can make an argument about how it changed the game's culture for the worse in the long run. Just look at what happened with WoW Classic. For a short period, the player base started bonding over shared struggled.... But in the same time span as it would take for people go through an expansion pack, all the selfish and impatient behaviors from Retail came back. This isn't limited to WoW, but WoW Classic made the comparison very easy to make. Because at its core, regardless of how large the demographic is, the Solo Mindset is inherently toxic to games fundamentally designed around multiplayer. And when a single player game is given multiplayer, theres never enough incentive to actually play cooperatively, if no Dev put enough effort into designing ecosystems for it. I can boil it down to this pretty easily. A group minded player will usually have little issue playing solo, because they will be able to recognize problems that are too big for a single player to address. A solo-main player expects to succeed in spite of the game's intentions, because "thats how games are supposed to be". Its not hard to notice most of the loud solo players believe it their "RIGHT" to be able to succeed using multicrew ships, without needing other players as crew. Their solution to almost everything is some form of automation. AND their justification is almost always pitched as addressing the inconvenience imposed by other people. THIS is why I now routinely challenge a lot of suggestions citing better solo player experience.... because they're usually thinly veiled attempts at automating the game play out of a game, and removing its value from everyone for their own benefit. For example..... why wouldn't everyone have an NPC Engineer if they're just as good or better than players doing the Engineering job? And if everyone can solo a multicrew ship using NPCs to automate processes, why not every group just field their own ship? And if you look closely enough, that path leads to many of the things that lead EVE to be stuck in the design its in now. It can't scale up or down, because one player per automated ship, regardless of size, is just too man power efficient. And knowing the history of Dust514 and Valkyrie, and why both failed to integrate into EVE's main universe, did a lot to inform the kind of design traps most games would normally embrace, while SC set out to explicitly avoid.

There might not be a crime stat in Pyro but there will be gang rep and while cops won't come for you, you can have gangs gunning for you in Pyro. Unlike the cops in Stanton, gangs might be shooting to kill instead of arrest. OTOH, surviving gang attacks could build your rep with other gangs and open missions you wouldn't otherwise get until you got this level of rep with said gang. Thus, some players might deliberately poke at some gangs to build rep with other gangs. Me? I'm a clean living, law abiding citizen, hauling goods of a legal nature from A to B, occasionally exploring and mapping new sights. Look....I'm tired of having to fight for the right of solo players right to enjoy themselves.... Xerostate is on point about this... You don't punish a playerbase "just cause".... Yes, they matter. Yes, they have a right to buy whatever ship they want. No, they shouldn't just get the short end of the stick just cause CR says he wants to promote team play.... The fact of the matter is, just as Xero said, the majority of players play solo. And in games where the team play is borderline forced down your throat, the game usually dies out quickly. Not everyone gets a raging boner from chugging across the galaxy literally nut to butt with EVERYTHING they do. Some people love the solitude. For those that don't, cool. Chug along as you were. You can't/shouldn't build a game, Space Tomatoe, with the idea that ships will eventually have the ability to be operated with NPC's, literally sell millions of those ships with you guessed it, a huge majority of players anticipating and expecting these ships to be ran by them and their NPC crew, then snatch the ship away from them and say; No ship for you!!! I'm not an expert but ugh....I'm pretty sure that would be a PR nightmare....Wouldn't you say? Yes, it has to rain before it shines sometimes and most of us are fully prepared for the pending drought of large solo ship control that T-0 engineering will bring.... That doesn't mean it will stay that way... Sometimes you just have to tear up the walkway to pave a smoother road. We're ready for that. We're also anticipating npc's. We don't expect to be on par to a human crewed ship but we expect to at least have a fighting chance.... If they opened up tomorrow and said ships needed a live crew to run, and if you didn't have one, you'd be stuck in single seater ships only...... I can promise you funding will come to a grinding halt and from there forward, you'd see a huge difference in ship sales. Sometimes you have to just look at the big picture and respect what's keeping this train rolling...

I don't know if I would consider player based stations or a player run economy to be necessary aspects to a sandbox game. @@Tsudico I think what your describing is more open world gameplay vs sandbox. @@Diogenes76 You basically said the same thing in a different way than I did. Your "like a sandbox where you just have the tools to build what you need" is my "player's self-directed progression." There have been many examples of players creating entertainment within Star Citizen that isn't included directly in the game play itself but emerges out of what can be done by combining different portions of game play. But it is likely we will have to agree to disagree, it seems you see open worlds as a different genre entirely where I see open world as a style of sandbox.

@@Tsudico A sandbox is more like and Eve and UO where the players almost completely create the economy and content. SC only seems like that because us players have to create the content because for now because the game is in Alpha. SC is an open world game like ESO, but with little content because it is an alpha.
@Tsudico
@Tsudico 13 күн бұрын
@@Diogenes76 You are seeing hand tailored content specifically because CIG is still working on features. SoO and Xenothreat are example missions and mission chains in preparation for dynamic events that can occur due to player interactions. But even in your own lauded games like Eve and UO there is hand tailored content and economic tweaks mixed in with the other stuff. For example, Ultima Online had expansion packs that contained new quests and advanced the story. And Ultima Online attempted to have an AI ecology but it couldn't keep up with player activities. I would say that Quantum is a spiritual successor to that idea by having AI be able to dynamically adjust the universe while still taking player actions into account.

Star Citizen lacks stability in server performance, player progression and worthwhile gameplay. I'm worried that people (especially CIG) think that it is a good game as it stands. Even when it's working pretty well, it's not good. Big improvements in 3.23 but the game is a bit too hard unless you've paid big money for a decent ship (lesser ships take 10x as many hits as mine, is it a bug?). I'm only up 30k after 3 days effort and a lot of bugs and irritations wasting my time and resetting my progress. So now it's a more enjoyable player experience (it really is) the game has become harder and more of a grind to progress. Lack of content seems to be the cause as there aren't enough missions to cover all the different ships and possible players taking part. My poor Aurora has no function other than handballing single boxes of waste into space. Does seem a little like they are tweaking mission difficulty and events for those who have bought big ships and large player groups (testing!). Increasing the difficulty and grind to stop sweaty players and clans from hoarding huge amounts of money ( CIG protecting their ship selling revenue) is gonna have a bad effect on solo players and players who can only afford a basic starter ship. The core of the game HAS to be about progressing from a shitty-ship-having-nobody to a fleet-owning-legend. The need to buy a bigger ship to be able to enjoy the game content is greater than ever. I think they will tweak and change and add content to fix this but given the financial model at play in this development, it's important to keep an eye on it because assuming the game becomes all smooth running, bug free and "feature and content complete", player grind vs ship sales WILL be the issue that makes or breaks the game for many people. Hopefully they will make enough money to be able to respect our time and also make the grind a fun experience.
@Gnarfendorf

I get where you are coming from, but without the need to grind for big ships or expensive equipment what would be the incentive to so any of the money making activities in the first place? Balancing MMO economies so they dont lean too much in one direction or the other is not easy, and depending on how they do it it wont appeal to certain groups period. The spacedad who has maybe an hour a day to play the game shouldnt expect to be able to keep up with the no-lifers who have all the time in the world, be it skill or moneywise.

Your Star Citizen attempt comparison with CyberPunk 2077 game is unrealistic. CP2077 price for the full game was 60$ at launch. Now you can buy CP2077 Ultimate edition (which include Phantom Liberty expansion) for 53$ discounted and it is a very good REAL game (after 2 years of patches since 2020 release date). Time for CP 2077 development including patches after release was aproximately 6+2=8 years. Star Citizen is in development for 12 years and has no official release date with a budget way bigger than of CP2077 (4 times bigger?). Also Star Citizen price is too expensive, paying minimum 50$ for the core gameplay and a basic ship, if you want a normal experience you have to pay more like 200$. Also Star Citizen is selling ships packs with delusional prices up to 20.000 USD. So Cyberpunk 2077 is a real AAA game, and Star Citizen it IS NOT EVEN a GAME, it is a PLEDGE as Robert Industries lawyers called it, to guard against buyers lawsuits. Pledge legal definition is a thing that is given as security for the fulfilment of a contract or the payment of a debt and is liable to FORFEITURE in the event of FAILURE. So Robert Industrie, for money greed reasons, do not sell Star Citizen as a game, a FINISHED or in development game, and instead they sell VIRTUAL PROMISES - PLEDGES for REAL MONEY and it is still plagued by numerous bugs. Better call a spade a spade.
