2024 must be the worst year for Boeing as a company. From whistleblower scandals to the aircraft safety issues making headlines, Boeing's reputation has taken a significant hit. Now, something even more serious is happening: the lives of astronauts are at risk. Boeing had one chance to turn public anger into appreciation with the Starliner project, but it seems they've blown that chance too. Now, it's not just about their reputation; it's about the safety of the astronauts stuck at the International Space Station.
As Boeing and NASA continue to address the Starliner issues, there appears to be one very reliable option for the astronauts' return to Earth and that’s SpaceX. In this video, we will discuss how this situation will end with SpaceX successfully returning the astronauts, as it has done before. Before we delve any deeper, please make sure to subscribe to our channel for future updates on this and many more topics.
The launch of Boeing's Starliner has been a journey filled with multiple challenges, even before it successfully docked with the International Space Station.
Initially scheduled for earlier dates, the first crewed launch attempt on May 6 was scrubbed due to a valve issue in the Atlas V rocket, which regulates the pressure on the upper stage. This valve was found to be malfunctioning, leading to a last-minute cancellation. Following this, the launch was rescheduled but faced another delay on June 1 when a computer card issue in the ground launch sequencer caused an automatic hold just minutes before liftoff. Engineers identified a problem with the power supply unit in one of the ground control computers, necessitating the replacement of the faulty component before another attempt could be made.
Despite these problems, the Starliner successfully launched on June 5 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Aboard the spacecraft were veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who were tasked with testing the vehicle’s systems in preparation for future operational missions. The spacecraft reached a safe and stable orbit, docking with the international space station on June 6.
Now, you might think the issue has ended when the spacecraft docked with the space station, but the challenges continued to mount with technical issues and delays that have extended the return mission.
Initially, the Starliner was scheduled to return on June 18, 2024, but this was delayed due to the need for additional preparations and spacewalks that were originally planned for June 13. These spacewalks were subsequently canceled due to spacesuit discomfort.
The return was then rescheduled to June 22, 2024. However, this date also faced postponements due to ongoing technical issues with the spacecraft. Specifically, the Starliner experienced helium leaks in its propulsion system, which required further investigation.
Again, On June 18, NASA announced another delay, pushing the return date to June 26, 2024. However, experts believe that the mission will be delayed even further as Boeing still does not seem to have fully understood the underlying problems.

Boeing suffers from the mindset of all Iron Triangle companies. Boeing believed that they were so well protected that they didn’t have to compete on performance, speed, or price. I worked with Lockheed Martin on a project and I saw it first-hand. Our company was lean, hungry, and innovative. Our partner, LM, was bloated, lazy, and hidebound. They wouldn’t do ANYTHING AT ALL unless that specific action was paid for by a line item in the contract, and the price was extraordinary. The Navy wanted a proposal on something and LM wanted $300K to develop a proposal in 3 months. We did it for free in two weeks. The Navy wanted a drone submarine for our SSN’s to war game against. From design to delivery our 110’ sub was fully tested and operational in 10 months. LM literally did not care if what they provided worked or not. In fact, making things work was considered extra work for which the government had to pay extra. Boeing and LM have the Union worker mindset that the government should pay them for their time and effort, not for actual performance.

There was a documentary about how Boeing started losing its way when it took over Douglas. Apparently after that you got more finance types and less engineers being c-level executives, so the CEO no longer was an engineer who knew how planes had to be built. After that, it was a slow insidious change. I think they need to go back to those earlier days when the people who ran the company knew what was needed to build airplanes, and they ran the company accordingly. Profit seems to be the only priority now, and you see the effects, both in the civil aviation part of the company and in the space flight section. It's sad. They decided to rehash the 737 into the Max and made a bunch of poor design choices trying to go (relatively) cheap and save money over a clean sheet design. So now there are two crashed planes, a few hundred dead people, and the FAA is in Boeing's plants watching them build airplanes, and Boeing can't even say when their brand new 777x planes are going to be certified for commercial flight by the FAA. So, I'm not surprised by the problems Boeing is having with the Star Liner, and if SpaceX manages to pull Boeing's chestnuts out of the fire, well, what can I say? How the mighty have fallen.

I’m a retire from Boeing, but I’ve never respected their management. I only retired from them because they bought the company I worked for. Boeing isn’t a technical company over the last 20 years; they are an acquisition company run by bean-counters. Their Space portion of their company was acquired from Douglas Space Division. To much to say that isn’t fit without a formal interview. I also was a main designer of the First iteration of the Space Station. Again not as a Boeing employee. They need less BS business types and lawyers, and more REAL Engineers and technicians.

As someone who has spent the last 30 years in the corporate world. Boeing's problem is too many chiefs creating a bloated bureaucracy. They should streamline management to the bare minimum. I have watched simple approvals take months or never get done. Each manager at the next level questions everything and sends it back for revisions resulting in very little getting approved. Musk doesn't have the big bureaucracy and it shows. He created the best space program in the history of mankind.

Is it a coincidence that Boeing is having all this trouble at the same time they went all in on DEI?
@Databyter
@Databyter 7 күн бұрын
I don't know why Boeing can't get its leadership and management to maintain quality together. After all, listen to their "focus" on leadership Quote: "We know diversity must be at the table for every important decision our company makes - every challenge we face, every innovation we design. Equity, diversity and inclusion are core values because they make Boeing - and each of us individually - better." Meanwhile Spacex simply hires the most motivated, intelligent, and experienced people, and that is their focus, and this thing called DEI takes a back seat. Their tanks and valves seem to not have holes in them. Their spacesuits are built for actual activity, not paper specs. Their rocket tests are PHYSICAL not simulated. Their crews and teams ARE diverse, but might not meet some arbitrary standard, and too bad because all of those people have moral, and respect their more talented and experienced managers and engineers. I don't know if this is the biggest factor in Boeings failure to live up to it's experience. But when you throw out the very things that made you great, in exchange for some virtue signalling propoganda, there might be some consequences. And when you are space walking, you don't give a damn if a Trans engineer designed your CO2 filter, or a Latino American managed the assembly of your face shield. You just want it to work, and expect that the people who do those things the best, will rise to the top because of performance and aptitude, not quota's and equity. At Spacex they don't say what woman can we put in charge of operations. They say who is the most experienced and qualified. Turns out it was a woman with massive experience related to the industry. The "diversity" was not a prime consideration. Society is making a mistake when it forces outcomes, instead of encouraging social evolution. You should eliminate discrimination. But not by arbitrarily putting people in positions of authority based on gender, race, or culture. The key thing is not to allow restrictions, not to push any particular outcome. There is a saying "It's not rocket science" to refer to something being relatively normal on a skills level basis. Well Rocket Science IS rocket science, and there are only a small percentage of people in the world who can design, manufacture, and assemble complex rocket systems. The focus at Spacex is to without discrimination, elevate the most talented people to the places they can shine and ensure success for the project. This is something that the whole company, and all the employees in it can get behind. Judge a tree by it's fruits. Musk is doing it right. Boeing needs to learn the lesson, if it even CAN, because the leadership at Boeing, like many Companies, may be too incompetent to troubleshoot their own deficiencies and correct their course. And it is a lot more than DEI and bad leadership and lack of morale. They need to remember what made them great, and focus on excellence. And have the courage to not give a damn what anybody else thinks about it. Leadership comes from within. It is not done by committees and trial balloons. Just sayin. Databyter
