the drone view after the splash down is poetic and surreal! 1:37:32 : that is a sculpture in light - captures the magic of humanity. for the 4 people who has been risking their lives... trusting everything on the crew for all these years... calling "mission complete" - setting in motion the "recovery mission" for the crew and there by the next steps - sighing "ok... now back home into the future..."☕ - this is it. this is the proof that as a team - humans can do a lot for this world because we put the heart into it!

Thanks for putting this on KZbin! 😊 I always get chills (the good kind) watching SpaceX crewed capsule recovery operations, partly because the high-quality coverage helps me appreciate the magnitude of the endeavor, and partly because the every mission brings us closer to setting foot on the Moon and/or Mars. 😊

Drogues chutes are designed to intentionally not catch enough air to land an object gently, but instead catch a tiny amount of air to simply slow a fast moving object. Mostly slow enough to put out parachutes that can slow the object to a gentle landing. If a parachute caught that much air, it would tear itself apart at the high speeds. But being tiny, they can hold up to the high speed. Like a stage 1 and stage 2 rocket but in reverse.

Drogue is just a small parachute that in space capsules are used to slow down to a point the main chutes can be deployed without ripping off. In aircraft they were used to slow the plane down fast during landing. Older fighter jets may still use them. Another successful mission from SpaceX.

Great re-entry tracking, best I've ever seen. Btw, you are using the word reef, with respect to parachutes, wrongly. They are reefed for deployment to reduce their working area and thus the shock on them and their lines. They are then unreefed to inflate fully. The camera view of the chutes is not from the nosecone but from the chute bay on Dragon's side, the small one between the windows. Mains deploy from the lower, larger, chute bay.
@ebrock1972Ай бұрын
The chutes come out reefed and then proceeded to open. Reefing is reducing the area. It comes from sailing when you reduce sail area you reef the sails.

4th parachute reef delay is mostly a result of lateral air turbulence disrupting the flow entering the canopy and wrapping around the "trailing edge" producing additional pressure to the outside of the canopy.

Now I want to see a Copernicus Dawn mission. …orbit over Copernicus Crater on the Moon! They should build a bigger 5m diameter SuperDragon capsule with a service and propulsion “trunk” that would allow at least a 14-day endurance on its own in space. Launch it to the moon using a single Starship-SuperHeavy launch and an expendable 3rd stage. An interim craft, until Starship is man-rated, and a follow-on to CrewDragon.
