What they should do for Hubble is have a boost stage that attaches itself to Hubble. However it will not only boost Hubble's orbit, but that attachment stage will also perform all of Hubble's movements, including any stabilization, because that boost stage will also have gyroscopes, and a new positioning system built into that boost stage, which ultimately replaces Hubble's instead.

It's crazy to think that 4 years ago today that SN 8 took flight, tried the belly flop and went kaboom. Now, Superheavy has been built and so many of the issues that were there with Raptor and the vehicles have been worked out, and now we're anticipating IFT 3. What a time to be alive with the madness of Elon and the dedication of the SpaceX team to make that vision a reality

@@MarcusHouseI just love when people with no engineering knowledge nor any will to acquire it criticise engineering. I'm usually trying to gently inform them but predictably they are not interested. The other thing is unfortunately politics involved. Or perhaps psychiatry. On one hand, being engineer myself I can recognise engineering thought process at work and Musk is definitely capable of it in spades. On the other hand I have written him off as a positive contributor to SpaceX going forward on account of descent into madness and childish behaviour. The other thing falling on deaf ears is that SpaceX is not Elon Musk. It is a group of very talented people, directed by Gwyn Shotwell, a brilliant person on her own. Some people just like it black and white and simple. Such times.

@@yumazsterIDK what naysayers say, I may be considered as one too, seeing engineering problems in going to Mars. Take a look at the launch site. Even with Mars gravity... Put geologists to Mars to find metals, water, foundry, machine shops to make tools to construct that infstrastructure in Mars etc, infrastructure to land few humans safely, the nice watersprout Starship requires, plant rubber trees for vehicles and seals that provide infrastructure... I mean, SSAB rather bought than made metalworks (more than half century old), surely it's easier in Mars. And living in lava-tunnels, I mean, those in Africa have huge cities already here, they're so safe places (oops except not even tested on Earth). I'm just saying Elon-time against real life, darn the dude's a dreamer. Everyone needs or should be. Also, good job so far :)

@@la7dfa I don't see what one has to do with the other. You can bring the price down to a whopping dollar to space for the whole space craft but if the spacecraft doesn't physically have the capability to do on orbit repair work, it doesn't matter how cheap it is.

The only really notable feature is that it could do recovery from orbit, but there doesn't seem much point to it if the capability was rarely if ever used. (Added complexity, and the extra weight could have been for mission payloads instead.)
@bignades1
@bignades1 5 ай бұрын
Accidents and issues aside, space shuttle failed in one of its primary goal: reduce costs through reusability. It’s the entire reason why it was a space plane and it didn’t work out. It would’ve been far cheaper to use conventional rockets and drop them in the ocean. Obviously by the time that became clear, it was not worth starting over(there’s a whole political angle too). But it never really had any unique advantages that a conventional rockets couldn’t have had, with the exception of the ability to bring satellites back down to earth from orbit, which was done only once and it wasn’t a big deal anyways. Having an airlock and an arm on a conventional crew system would’ve been much simpler and cheaper than the shuttle too. Not to deride the engineers of space shuttle or anything, what they did was amazing. We just learned along the way that space planes with complex heat shield shapes do not offer cost savings compared to conventional rockets due to maintenance costs

ISRO has the potential to be the biggest competitor to NASA, they're kicking goals, and doing so on mission budgets that look like a pittance compared to that which is wasted in the US. The number of flights each Falcon9 booster is getting, the savings compared to throwing away the hardware each time, will already be adding up to the point SpaceX can fund many more boosters.

Hi Marcus - first time posting... You are absolutely right about all the nay sayers.... I think people forget about the NASA history in developing the rocketry components for gemini and Apollo. They had to learn and grow through their own challenges as they developed the technology, and if people think they can do better, then they should step up and do better.... Been watching the channel for some time and just want to say how much I appreciate your channel and how much I look forward to my Saturday nights inviting you my home... There is a slight difference. NASA had no real tech or knowledge to build from, and had to literally build up the knowledge base to create things for the future. SpaceX and all other modern space rocketry companies have that knowledge to build upon. The two situations are NOT actually comparable. It's like talking about how a car company is failing, and trying to compare them to some of the first cars, and how someone like Ford made the car affordable... Not the same situation, since the people today, well... they have that experience to draw from.

I was one of the many people, rocket engineering experts included, who were very skeptical about the profitability of reusing the Falcon 9. Sure, nobody can look into the books of Space X and truly say how profitable it is. But I think its safe to say, that Space X wouldn't launch so ridiculously many reused rocket boosters for their own projects if it would financially bleed them out. People have plenty of room to be skeptics about the Mars colony. But closing your eyes in front of observable facts is just silly.

Don't be so surprised that the Polaris mission to Hubble turns into a servicing mission. Sending humans up there just for a reboost would have been a colossal waste. Way to kick ass and take names, Marcus! I’ve followed space exploration since I was a kid in the early sixties. So, I’ve seen the best of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo years, the Space Shuttle and now the new era of space exploration. So, there’s no bullshitting me, if you’ll excuse the expression. The naysayers are jerks. Again…not an eloquent way of stating it, nonetheless abundantly true. Progress in rocket development and spaceflight is astounding these days, and it is due in extremely large part to the contributions of commercial space. And who is the preeminent player in that realm but SpaceX. The partnership between NASA and commercial space is absolutely amazing. I trained and worked with a number of NASA people in my job with the Air Force. They are wonderful, brilliant, inspirational people. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

A lot of negative comments arise due to SpaceX using a rapid reiteration process. This is because they are used to NASA’s “All must be in ordnung!” attitude. In reality the rapid reiteration prototyping process is so common in industry that it has a slang name: “smoke test”, as in “Fire it up and see what smokes.” Of course, when the managers are around it is called “test to destruction” so they don’t panic when something blows up. The only thing different about SpaceX, is they must necessarily do this in public instead of in a factory or on a private test track hidden in the Mojave Desert. The naysayers and trolls are either just revealing thier ignorance with their posts or personally invested in tearing down anything Musk does because he refused the liberal demands to censor Twitter. In retaliation, they rage quit and pulled their advertising, then accused him of the resulting destruction. Now they are trying to tear down SpaceX, but running into a solid wall of space enthusiasts who know SpaceX is doing good work, and is the best shot we have at getting to space without being a super genius or a billionaire. In either case, they are wrong, and us space enthusiasts ate refusing to drink their kool-aid, thus enraging them even more.

A yes, the "liberal demands to censor Twitter". They should know Musk only listens to autocratic demands to censor Twitter, like when he broke from Twitter's previous position on censorship to comply with Erdogan's request for censorship during the Turkish election. I mean Elon Musk is such an pioneer of _free_ speech, he's pioneered charging everyone on Twitter a Dollar per year if they don't want to be in read-only mode. And yes, you are absolutely correct, businesses reducing advertisement spending on Twitter is totally an "act of retaliation" and not a result of Twitter ads having horrible click through rate and customer conversion rates, as well as Twitter not being as good as its competitors at targeted ads. I'm sure it has nothing to do with inflation, increased interest rates or any of the other effects covid had on the economy. And I'm sure it has absolutely NOTHING to do with Twitter cutting its content moderation team, killing its own iconic bird brand and replacing it with X, a letter usually associated with porn sites, or ads appearing next to quotes from Hitler. And Certainly Elon Musk himself, who in his infinite wisdom has been retweeting Nazis and antisemitic hate speech, and literally said "go fuck yourself" to his advertising customers had no part in scaring those customers away.

12:30 You are so right. Could talk hours about how much resistance and hostility and disbelief SpaceX pushed through to make this all possible (and even legal resistance and corruption - SpaceX won against the corruption of the military-aerospace-complex, which is insane, and fought hard to open up the market for many other companies. They worked together with government agencies and other pioneers of private spaceflight to create the legal and practical framework to make today's startups possible). People claimed what SpaceX was trying was impossible. People laughed at them for even trying. Then they made progress, but people claimed it was unlikely to work. Then it worked. People in the industry became scared and defensive, and lashed out - because if someone's job depends on not understanding something, they won't understand it. Then people claimed it wouldn't ever be reliable enough. It became reliable. Then people claimed it wouldn't be profitable enough. It became profitable. The fact people nowadays claim that SpaceX is just some sort of natural evolution that would have happened regardless is ridiculous. No, it took hard work against prior beliefs. And then they claim Elon Musk is just some hack and anybody could have funded and led this operation, which is likewise absurd. Fake news everywhere, and people just believe it. Literally 90% of negative "news" regarding SpaceX/Tesla/Musk is just false (often, these kinds of articles disarm their own narrative if you actually read them carefully and know the context). Most recent example was the completely false Reuters report about SpaceX having high accident rates. I'm not going to speculate on why "the media" is pushing hatred against Elon Musk and his companies. I am excited for the future. Now that this beacon has been lit, it's not stopping, no matter what anybody says. There are so many various governments and private companies making so many plans. If even a percent of those succeed, the future in space is going to be insane. Private space stations everywhere. Lunar and Mars bases. Daily launches of fully reusable heavy-lift rockets. An orbital economy. A multi-planetary humanity.

And thank you for another wonderful video. Whether it comes on Saturday or in the middle of the week, it's always a pleasure to learn the latest news from you. It is astounding how successful the Falcon 9 has become. Like you said it had it's own process of trial and error in development, but when they got it right, they really got it. 250 missions now! That just shows how effective this kind of development process can be. I've no doubt they'll achieve a similar level of success with Starship, and it's exciting to watch each step along the way. People forget how unusual it is to see rockets being developed out in open where everyone can see. For most of history rockets have been top secret stuff, and you only hear about tests long after they're completed. SpaceX is pioneering a new approach in more ways than one.

The real question is not "will Starship work" it's "when will Starship work". How much will Starship delay the Artemis moon landing, or the DearMoon mission or V2 Starlink or any other mission that relies on it? I have a high level of confidence that Starship will eventually reach orbit and then later even achieve full reusability, but I have zero confidence in SpaceX keeping their promises about the timeline. If that makes me a naysayer, then that's what I am.

You’re not wrong, the entire space industry has delivered far more projects behind schedule through history than on time. It’s kind of ridiculous they allow the same planning to go on with every contract and haven’t managed to get some reasonable timelines.
@Yattayatta
@Yattayatta 5 ай бұрын
@@cosmicinsane516 There is a very simple reason why it keeps happening in the research industry, not just space research. You don't know what you don't know. For comparison, imagine you lived 500 years ago, and you have to ride to the next town over, you know it takes around 3 hours, you've done it before, so you say 3 hours, maybe a little more. Now someone asks how long would it take to ride to the little town over the mountain? well, you've never been over the mountain, you estimate it's about twice as far as the next town over, and going up the mountain should be half speed, so you guess at 7 hours. But maybe the road winds up and down the side of the mountain, or maybe the horse needs to go very slowly in some parts, you just don't know. So when someone asks, you say "well, it looks doable in 7 hours, maybe 8" But you might actually need to ride around the mountain making it take 20, or it's a simple straight path and it just takes 6. This is research, there isn't a way to tell what might crop up down the road, you can simulate and guesstimate, to get a closer guess, but that might turn out to just add extra time. So why don't you just report the worst case scenario? "I'll take 20 hours, maybe faster" Well, there might be other ways to get whatever over to that little town competing with your horse ride, and you can't do them all, but they all also have the same problem. Is it faster to send someone without a horse? climb over the mountain? it can't be known for sure until tested which method is the fastest/cheapest. Look at fusion for a great example. If you go back to 1950 and look at it, we developed nuclear reactors in just a few short years, that wasn't a problem, the fusion problem looks harder, but not impossible. All the calculations turn out to be off though, making it harder again than was thought. A problem that looked like an 8 on a scale of 1-10 of how hard it would be turned out to be a very solid 10. So what happens next? well it turns out that the mathematical models didn't predict a certain type of plasma instability, setting the projects back again. Hopefully 2025 or 2026 we'll run the first net positive plasma reaction, but even if that is looking good right now, we might be wrong on how the tritium breeding will turn out. So if you go back to 1950 and said, it'll take nearly 100 years before we get a fusion power station, maybe it would've been wise to go another way, or maybe researching fusion gave us enough knowledge about magnetism, magnets, plasma and other phenomena that it will turn out to be our greatest achievement. TLDR: If it's never been done before, you can't know how long it will take, you can only guess.

How much did NASA or Boeing delay Artemis? How much did they waste on SLS if it's going to be redundant when Starship becomes a commercial option? The timelines are indeed silly, but again: were the SLS timeline or budget goals ever respected?
@plainText384
@plainText384 5 ай бұрын
@@AdelaeR SLS is ready. It's flown to the moon and back. It'll fly crew in about a year. SLS is no longer the problem, and even if it were ready 10 years ago, that wouldn't change that we are waiting on the moon lander. Now, should NASA have started development/handing out contracts for HLS earlier? Should NASA have trusted and chosen SpaceX's HLS proposal? These are definitely valid questions. At the end of the day Artemis is NASA's project and they have some responsibility to find good contractors with trustworthy proposals. And it's very questionable if NASA will ever crew rate Starship for Earth liftoff and landing (would be necessary to completely replace SLS with Starship). I actually see NASA/ DARPA making Starship, with its many refuelings partially obsolete via their high efficiency nuclear propulsion project.
@plainText384

@@Yattayatta if the 2025/26 timeline is alluding to ITER, that's a lower bound for first plasma, not full fusion operation. Full D-T fusion, where we hope to see energy generation in the plasma is aimed for 2035 optimistically. Then later, a first prototype DEMO net electricity generating fusion plant maybe ~ 2055 and full commercial adoption one generation after that (2070s?). Still 150 years would be less than what it took to build some European churches.
