I wonder if these hold the required amount of fuel for the landing that way, if for any reason the tanks were to run low, this reserve amount would allow still to reach tower. Or maybe this is an abort amount of fuel in case they can’t catch and these provide the fuel to fly it back to ocean to abort.

The Polaris Dawn Mission always sounded cool, but when put in the perspective that this is the first time a single company has all the means, a rocket, capsule, space suits, etc to do a space walk mission, that really hit hard. That's both support cool and kinda terrifying.

i have a few concern's about the touch screens in the Dragon under the vacuum, i say this because i did some testing on a smart phone under vacuum last year & had delamination problems with the screen, i hope the folks at SpacX have accounted for this potential issue, the bigger the screen the bigger the problem due to the fluid between the laminate

My postulation is that these tanks are for landing pressurization. The autogenous pressurization system has water vapor in it, thus leading to ice build-up in the tank and blocking the intakes for the engines. Some of the autogenous system will still be used, but until they figure out how to remove the water vapor from it, it will be secondary to the small tanks, likely full of Helium.

The PEZ dispenser is fine for the Starlink satellites (and probably some other communication satellites that can adopt their shape) but what about other payloads that wan't to take advantage of the large geometry of Starship/BFR? From earlier comments it has appeared like Elon didn't want to offer a second stage + fairing solution for the BFR. What's his plan here?

Some good reasons NOT to catch the booster on the tower: Untill they have a 99.99% landing success rate the risk of destroying a tower on landing is too great. If they catch the boosters at sea they will gain some payload capacity, and they'll be able to inspect and refurbish them in queue, so even though it would require more boosters overall, it could potentially increase launch cadence because they could launch one booster, and have several more ready to mount and launch, with much less risk of destroying a launch tower. Losing a tower would be a huge detriment to launch cadence. Also with the current gameplan they're going to build a habit of getting the booster inspected and refurbished as fast as possible after it lands on the tower, which will lead to accidents.

My father was an engineer at NASA Clear Lake with Engineering and Development and i can remember the headaches he mentioned of them trying to harden electronics for vacuum. Switches arc and weld together, IC chips fail type stuff. They basically handled it by enclosing everything in sealed pressurized boxes. I wonder what SpaceX has done.

That’s a very critical point for the future; including, for example, folks at say RocketLab. Their new Neutron will have a reusable 1st stage but still expendable 2nd stage. Once they go thru birthing pains for the first stage & are flying regularly, any operational failures they end up having will probably happen…on the ‘new’ 2nd stage that is flown each flight. - Dave Huntsman

Even on non-reusable vehicles, second-stage failures make up the majority of incidents... e.g. RocketLab have never had an Electron booster fail, but they've had a few second-stages malfunction, and the same can be said of most of the industry. I suspect it's simply that first-stages can test a lot of their operations while still on the ground (e.g. static fires), while second-stages have to ignite their engines in freefall, and have to operate them in a vacuum... much harder to ground-test.

My prediction for the next Starship Flight 5 is that it could launch on Thursday, August 1st, since all previous Starship flights have occurred on Thursdays (except for Flight 2, which launched on a Saturday). If not on August 1st, it might be on August 8th,Thursday, God Knows

Why don't they use heat tiles to cover the launch pad and tower? Aside from protecting the site, it would be a recurring test for heat resistance, vibration and shock, which could be used to make Starship's heat shield more reliable.

stacking should be quick, assuming, that from an engineering perspective, if you have built out each section with all the necessary plumbing, electrical, and interconnects, getting those built and transported has taken months and been the challenge. I expect the full 9 to be stacked within the next 30 days IF they are in fact complete segments and don't need further work on the ground. I like the approach they have taken to build it like a lego block tower. Wonder if NASA long-time engineers just look at this approach and shake their heads that they got entrenched in their mindset of how to build launch towers.

Helium tanks are kind of a disappointment. The big win on autogenous pressurization is you don't have to worry about having your helium all boiling off on long-duration missions. Helium pressurization means no Mars missions.

Nobody else refers to their rockets by separate names. Falcon 9 is the entire rocket including all stages. Same with Saturn V, Delta II, The Space shuttle, and every other rocket ever made. The second stage is a part of the falcon 9 rocket. Has falcon 9 ever flown without its second stage? No it hasn’t ever

@@mattkingston6157 not in this case...because clearly it's different... the booster can be used in other launches...the second stage doesn't. The booster didn't fail, it delivered the second stage and came back, landed and was recovered. So imo you can't use the same classification between non recoverable rockets and falcon 9.

I thought Elon said there's about a 50% chance of attempting the booster catch on return. Depending on how every step goes, they may bring the booster down elsewhere, but if everything goes well then they will continue with the mechazilla test catch.

Smaller tanks on the booster header do seem most likely to be for pressurization, although with that many, maybe not just of the header tank? Not sure how many is normal for a tiny tank like that…

Random out of box thought...Falcon Super Heavy (5 Stage 1s where 4 outer cores are recovered and central acting as a large Stage 2) could lift significant porions of a future space station in a single lift

No it couldn't. There'd be very little benefit in such a vehicle, because Falcon Heavy is already very limited in what it can do... it's not short of power, but it can't lift *big* payloads due to being a skinny rocket with a small-ish fairing. Adding two more cores will give you marginally more mass to orbit, but it doesn't help unless that mass is very compact.

@simongeard4824 Who says the most upper stage has to be the same diameter as the stage 1. Starliner has a larger diameter than its 2nd stage. You could have the final load with a diameter of three Falcon 9s

@@guydanielsau It doesn't have to be the _same_ diameter, but if it's much bigger, you can't fit a fairing around it.... and even if you could, it's not great aerodynamically to have a giant wide fairing at the front of a very skinny rocket. Starliner is an interesting comparison in that respect - it doesn't launch _inside_ a fairing, but it does need that weird skirt below the service module to remedy the aerodynamic problems caused by the size mismatch.
